A major rescue mission is underway at the US Steel Clairton Coke Works plant near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which exploded and left several people injured and trapped under rubble
One person has died, several people have been left injured and others are trapped under debris following a huge explosion at a steel plant in the US, with emergency services scrambling to the scene.

The Clairton Coke Works plant in near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been engulfed in heavy smoke as the major rescue operation continues.

The plant, a massive industrial facility along the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh, is considered the largest coking operation in North America and is one of four major US Steel plants in Pennsylvania that employ several thousand workers, reports the Mirror.

The explosion has left dozens wounded and people trapped under rubble. Emergency workers are currently on site trying to rescue them, officials say.
The Allegheny County Emergency Services said a fire at the plant started around 10:51am local time, and that it has transported five people. The agency did not provide any more details on those people transported and would only say it was an 'active scene.'
The plant is considered the largest coking operation in North America with several thousand employees. Senator John Fetterman has urged people in Pennsylvania to stay away from the site of the explosion.

"For those in the area, please listen to local officials and avoid the area," he wrote on X. "Keeping those injured and all who are impacted in my thoughts right now."

In recent years, the Clairton plant has been dogged by concerns about pollution. In 2019, it agreed to settle a 2017 lawsuit for $8.5 million (£7.3m).
Under the settlement, the company agreed to spend $6.5 million (£5.6m) to reduce soot emissions and noxious odors from the Clairton coke-making facility, on the Monongahela River about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Pittsburgh.
The company also faced other lawsuits over pollution from the Clairton facility, including ones accusing the company of violating clean air laws after a December 2018 fire damaged the Clairton facility's sulfur pollution controls.

Paradykes Primary School in Loanhead sent an email to parents warning them about the secret group chat of which nearly 90 pupils were members. The school's head teacher emailed parents on Thursday, August 14, advising 'some of the messages are highly inappropriate, referring explicitly to body parts and requesting nude photos' adding members being encouraged to 'add as many children as possible and not to let parents know'. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The head teacher added: 'I would urge you to check your child's phone and remove them from the group ASAP'. School bosses also suggested that parents report the Whatsapp group and its contents to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection services. One parent said they 'couldn't believe it' when they received the email from Paradykes Primary in Midlothian | Google Maps The revelation has seen some parents call for a ban on phones in schools. One parent said they 'wished the government would do a blanket ban on phones for kids and then it would be a lot easier to manage.' Another added: 'Phones should not be allowed in schools at all, and what a nine-year-old needs with social media is beyond me.' It is understood Midlothian Council has strict security and filter measures installed on council devices to block harmful content and alert staff if needed, however the recently discovered Whatsapp group was created on personal mobile phones. A Midlothian Council spokesperson said: 'The head teacher at Paradykes Primary emailed P6 parents today after a parent reported concerns about the online safety of children on a WhatsApp group. A council investigation confirmed the group was not on council devices. Support is available to any Paradykes Primary School pupil upset by this incident, if required.' Police Scotland has been approached for comment.

Second parent shares 'strangling' fears at Scots primary school

The mum, who spoke anonymously to protect her daughter's identity, revealed a series of troubling incidents. A second parent has come forward to claim her daughter fell victim of an 'attempted strangling' at a Scots primary school. ‌ The mum, who spoke anonymously to protect her daughter's identity revealed a serious of troubling incidents which saw her daughter, allegedly strangled, choked, threatened with a knife an a abused by a fellow pupil. ‌ She said her child had to be regularly taken out of her P4 class due to the violence she faced. And she feared for her daughter who has 'anxiety' about returning to school to start P5, Edinburgh Live reports. ‌ 'I feel physically sick at her lack of safety,' the mum said. 'She is terrified, she walks to school and comes home in tears. 'Each day I'm waiting by the phone to hear she has been hurt again. I feel like her education is being failed and they are not interested in taking on my complaint. 'The child who is doing this to her needs proper support. He should not be in a mainstream setting. 'I keep getting told this child is entitled to a state education. So is my child and she currently isn't getting that. They are failing my child.' The latest incident of strangling apparently took place shortly after her daughter had suffered from a broken collar bone which left her in serious pain. Another incident of choking is said to have taken place at the school. 'My daughter has been strangled and choked on two occasions now,' the mum added. 'She was also attacked with Lego. ‌ 'The boy threatened her by saying he was going to the canteen to get a knife for her. The way the school handles it also makes her a target for this boy. 'Their classroom is being evacuated all the time due to the boy throwing tables and chairs. He even attacked the teacher and smashed up thousands of pounds worth of equipment. ‌ 'He also swears and uses vile language towards my daughter and others. I'm at the stage where I'm considering going to the police as the council and school are doing nothing. 'Her anxiety is through the roof about going back to school. We are speaking to a GP this week for help and advice in regards to what we can do. 'I am an NHS worker and have had to take a long period of time off work to support my child with her needs with the ongoing issues.' ‌ Our sister title Edinburgh Live previously reported on violence at the same school. They told how a boy had targeted another girl over the course of the 2024/25 academic year. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The mother, who we chose not to name to protect her daughter's identity, has said her nine-year-old has been observed to have PTSD symptoms and suffer from anxiety as well as incontinence as a result of the multiple alleged attacks. ‌ On three occasions the attempt to strangle her daughter took place in school with another two taking place at the after school club which the parent has since removed her daughter from. An image shared at the time of reporting showed red marks on the young girl's neck. She also raised concerns about the young boy being found to have snapped cutlery items which were sharpened to points in his school tray at the end of the school year. 'There have been three instances of her being strangled at school and two at the after school club by the same boy,' she claimed. 'After the first incident we were told preventative steps were put in place but it keeps happening. 'On the second occasion I got a call from the deputy head telling me another boy had pinned her down while the same boy strangled her. I was then assured they would be separated and I was confident something would be done as staff seemed understanding. That was until it happened again.' A Midlothian council spokesman said: 'As we would always advise, families should work with the school. We do not comment on individual cases.'
