Footy star learns his fate after trying to smuggle almost $1million worth of meth to pay off debts from his cocaine addiction

Daily Mail30-04-2025

A former semi-professional rugby union star has been sentenced to four years and 22 days in prison after he pleaded guilty to trafficking nearly $1million worth of methamphetamine across the South Australian border from New South Wales.
Tiueti Asi, 33, who was born in New Zealand, had incurred a 'substantial debt to drug dealers' which Judge Jane Schammer said had arisen from his addiction to cocaine and had been transporting the methamphetamine to 'wipe the debt'.
Described as a talented rugby player, the back-row forward appeared in the South Australian District Court earlier in April where he was sentenced.
He is expected to spend at least two years behind bars, with his sentence being backdated to his arrest, following his early guilty plea. He will be eligible for parole in 2026.
The former rugby star and a father of two, most recently played for the Hunter Wildfires in New South Wales and was named the club's 'Wildfire of the Year' in 2023.
Asi was arrested on September 17, 2024. He was driving a Suzuki Swift along the Princes Highway in Tailem Bend when he was stopped by police officers and searched.
Officers from South Australia Police's Serious and Organised Crime Branch, the Australian Federal Police and NSW Police with Murray Mallee patrols found that Asi was transporting 8kg of methamphetamine and more than $3000 in cash.
The father of two had been charged with one count of trafficking a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug, a charge he later pleaded guilty to.
The charge carries a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.
When handing down sentencing, Judge Schammer detailed that Asi was also found to have been carrying three mobile phones and had substances which weighed between 991 and 995g.
'You had incurred a substantial debt to drug dealers arising from your previous addiction to cocaine. You agreed to transport the drugs to South Australia, driving from your home in New South Wales via Victoria, in order to wipe that debt,' Judge Schammer said.
'You feared you would be caught but took the risk to participate. Your fears were ultimately realised.'
The substances, which were sealed in eight individual packages, were stored in a black backpack found on his back seat.
'Each package contained mixed methamphetamine, with the respective weights of those substances ranging between 991 and 995g. In a bum bag in the front passenger footwell were personal items belonging to you, together with $3,720 in cash. You were found to be carrying three mobile phones, which were all seized.
'At that time, if sold in similarly packaged quantities, those drugs had a market value of between $720,000 and $840,000. If sold in smaller quantities, the drugs had a considerably higher market value.'
Described by the judge as a 'talented player' the footy star had enjoyed spells with West Harbour and Warringah, before joining the Wildfires in 2020.
He has also enjoyed stints playing in Spain and New Zealand.
Judge Schammer added: 'I accept that you are extremely ashamed and remorseful for what you have done and you feel as if you have let everyone close to you down.'
The Advertiser also claims that the arrest was made as part of Australian Federal Police's (AFP) Operation Kraken - a crackdown on an encrypted communications application that is used by alleged criminals.
As of December 2024, the AFP reported that more than 50 alleged criminals have been charged and $25m in assets have been restrained as part of the operation.

Desperate search for experienced camper who mysteriously vanished while travelling in outback Australia

Concerns are growing for a solo camper who has been missing for 10 days in the vast and remote wilderness of central Australia. Tyle Mali, 39, was last seen on Sunday, June 1 before he embarked on a trip into the far northern regions of South Australia. CCTV footage captured him entering a white 2023 Toyota HiAce, which he had rented from Mile End in Adelaide 's inner west. He was reportedly driving to Arkaroola, in the northern Flinders Ranges, around 630km, or an eight-hour drive, from Adelaide. The rental van, with South Australian registration S129-CWL, was last spotted in the Arkaroola area just after 6am on Monday, June 2. South Australia Police believe the vehicle was driven from Yunta to Arkaroola between May 30 and June 1. They are appealing to anyone who may have seen the van between these two locations, particularly along the Barrier Highway, about 280km south of Arkaroola. Authorities fear Mr Mali could be injured or stranded, with no confirmed sightings and no contact since early June. Assistant Commissioner Ian Parrott said police held 'serious concerns' for Mr Mali's safety. He confirmed that some of the camper's belongings had been found left behind at his accommodation in Arkaroola Village. Despite three days of intensive searching in the region, there has been no sign of him. The area is extremely remote, conditions are hot and dry, with limited mobile phone coverage, and the GPS tracking system on the hire van is out of range. 'He may have been injured, or his vehicle may have been disabled,' Parrott said. 'Given the lack of connectivity in the area, he may not be able to contact authorities.' Mr Mali is known to be an experienced camper. In a separate incident in 2021, Queensland Police said that Kyle had been reported missing after failing to contact his family for over a month before he was found. South Australian emergency services, along with PolAir crews, have been combing the vast and rugged terrain between Yunta and Arkaroola. But so far, the search efforts have come up empty. Anyone who has seen Kyle or the white Toyota HiAce van is urged to contact police immediately.

Outrage after young female prison guard working alone was sexually assaulted at knifepoint by an inmate then told to work the next day

A young female prison guard has been allegedly sexually assault while on duty before being asked to return to work the very next day. The young officer was working an early morning shift at the Adelaide Remand Centre, in the city's CBD on May 5 when an inmate allegedly threatened her with a makeshift knife. It's understood she had turned to secure a door when the prisoner allegedly sexually assaulted her from behind. The inmate allegedly showed the guard the weapon hidden in his jumper before telling her he would 'slit her throat' if she raised the alarm. In claims reported by 7NEWS, it's believed the prisoner told the guard he would hurt her family if she pressed the emergency alarm button. The officer was left traumatised by the alleged assault and suffered bruising. However, shockingly it's claimed she was asked to return to active duty the following day. A spokesperson for Adelaide Remand Centre, which is privately managed and operated by Serco, confirmed the incident and said South Australia Police were aware of the alleged assault. 'We take seriously any reported incident involving an alleged assault on one of our officers,' the spokesperson said. 'The matter has been formally referred to South Australia Police for investigation.' The spokesperson added the guard is receiving the necessary support and care she needs. 'We are committed to maintaining a safe environment for everyone and do not tolerate this type of alleged behaviour.' Daily Mail Australia has contacted Adelaide Remand Centre and South Australia Police for comment.

Alleged money laundering scheme is busted as cops uncover complex network in Australia

A security company allegedly used an armoured transport service to smuggle cash around the nation as it laundered millions of dollars of criminal proceeds. Three men - aged 32, 48 and 58 - and a 35-year-old woman have been charged with multiple money laundering offences, Australian Federal Police say. Investigations continue into the scheme that allegedly transferred $190million into cryptocurrency between October 2022 and May 2024. Authorities have restrained 17 properties, bank accounts and luxury cars in NSW and Queensland worth more than $21million, allegedly purchased with tainted money. 'This investigation has unravelled a sophisticated operation that allegedly moved illicit cash around the country,' AFP Detective Superintendent Adrian Telfer told reporters on Monday. 'It was truly a national operation, laundering the profits of criminal ventures across the country, (and) these cash profits were being flown into Queensland to be washed and returned to individuals.' Investigators allege the Gold Coast-based security company used a complex network of bank accounts, businesses, couriers and cryptocurrency accounts to launder millions of dollars of illicit funds over 18 months. 'The results we are announcing today will deliver a significant blow to alleged individuals, whoever relied on this operation to turn their ill-got profits into property portfolios, luxury cars and cryptocurrency,' Mr Telfer said. AFP Detective Superintendent Adrian Telfer claimed the alleged operation was a 'sophisticated operation that allegedly moved illicit cash around the country' (pictured, a Nissan GT-R seized by police) The 48-year-old man and the woman, who were the director and general manager respectively of the security business, were each charged with a money laundering offence. The couple was granted bail to face Southport Magistrates Court on July 21. The 58-year-old man is accused of funnelling laundered money through a business account to a separate business account controlled by the 32-year-old man. He was also charged with two money laundering offences and was granted bail to face Brisbane Magistrates Court on August 1. The 32-year-old man is accused of laundering $9.5 million through the operation over 15 months. He has been charged with money laundering and failing to provide the password to a mobile phone. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to face Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.
