MLB Insider Reports Cardinals' Top Priority Is Trading Closer At Deadline

The St. Louis Cardinals entered this season with low expectations, and even though they are within striking distance of a playoff spot, the club is reportedly looking to move their closer, Ryan Helsley, before Thursday's deadline.
According to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Cardinals have been in talks and are "devoted" to moving Helsley.

The right-hander is coming off a record-setting season where he saved 49 games to set the Cardinals' franchise record while also winning the National League Reliever of the Year award. This season has not been as profound for the Cardinals' closer, but he has saved 21 games thus far despite a rise in his WHIP and home runs per nine innings.
Teams are calling on the Cardinals closer to see what the cost was, and after the Pittsburgh Pirates are reported to be asking for a top-five prospect for David Bednar, by Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, some of them may shift their primary focus to Helsley.
Although the Cardinals could make a run at the final wild card spot, they are looking to put the team in the hands of Chaim Bloom next year with a clear evaluation of the talent. With Helsley possibly on his way out in free agency, the Cardinals could land something in return if they moved him by Thursday's deadline.
If the Cardinals make a run after trading Helsley, it could look like a poor decision to move on from the reliever, but it would give Bloom the confidence in his team next season.

The Chiefs' only former Cardinals player is Hollywood Brown, but he won't likely play in the preseason opener. The Arizona Cardinals will face the Kansas City Chiefs in their preseason opener Saturday night at State Farm Stadium at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. Arizona time). It will be a bit of a homecoming for one former Cardinals player. Chiefs wide receiver Hollywood Brown will be returning to State Farm Stadium since he signed with Kansas City last offseason. Brown played two seasons for the Cardinals. They acquired him in a draft-day trade in 2022. In two seasons, he played in 24 games, missing eight games to different injuries, caught 118 passes for 1,283 yards and scored seven touchdowns. He is the only former Cardinals player on the Chiefs' offseason roster. However, Brown might not get to play. He has been nursing an ankle injury he suffered last week. The Chiefs starters will start the game against the Cardinals starters, but we shouldn't expect to see Brown suit up. PHOENIX (AP) — Jose Iglesias followed Ryan O'Hearn's tying homer with a run-scoring single in the ninth inning and the San Diego Padres rallied to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 on Wednesday night. San Diego scored five runs in the 11th inning to beat the Diamondbacks 10-5 on Tuesday night and staged another late rally. With Arizona leading 2-1, O'Hearn led off the ninth with a tying homer off Kyle Backus (0-2), his first off a left-hander this season. Xander Bogaerts, who hit a solo homer in the seventh, followed with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Iglesias lined a single to right and Mason Miller worked around a walk in the the ninth for his 21st save. Adrian Morejon (9-4) allowed a hit in two innings for the Padres, who have won nine of 11. Corbin Carroll homered for Arizona. Padres starter Nestor Cortes had a shaky start in his first game since being traded from Milwaukee. Carroll hit his 23rd homer over the pool deck in right-center in the first inning and Cortes hit consecutive batters to load the bases in the second. Alek Thomas put Arizona up 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. Cortes allowed two runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings, with three strikeouts and three walks. Key moment Arizona third baseman Blaze Alexander snared Jackson Merrill's squibber off the base and dove to get a force out on third with two on and one out in the eighth. Freddy Fermin was initially ruled safe, but the play was overturn upon review.
