Badminton: China make world ambition clear with four home titles in all-local finals
Men's singles shuttler Shi Yuqi led the charge when he fought hard to beat surprise finalist Wang Zhengxing 14-21, 21-14, 21-15 in 64 minutes at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou on Saturday (July 26).
World No. 2 Yuqi was the hot favourite against world No. 23 Zhengxing and duly proved his class and experience by capturing his first crown in the home Open and third World Tour Super 1000 title of the year after triumphing in the Malaysian Open and All-England.
In the women's singles, world No. 2 Wang Zhiyi secured the title with a commanding 21-8, 21-13 victory over world No. 3 Han Yue in a one-sided final.
Han Yue had made it into the title match after South Korea's world No. 1 An Se-young retired from their semi-final match while trailing 19-21, 6-11 due to a knee injury a day earlier.
World No. 1 pairs Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning and Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping had earlier justified their top billings by claiming the women's doubles and mixed doubles titles respectively.
Shengshu-Tan Ning overcame a stiff challenge from world No. 7 Jia Yifan-Zhang Shuxian, coming out on top 24-22, 17-21, 21-14 in a thrilling match which lasted 69 minutes.
It was the duo's fourth title of the year after their wins in the Indonesian Open, Japan Open and Malaysian Masters and underlined their status as favourites for gold in the world meet.
Yanzhe-Dongping also flexed their muscles by ousting world No. 2 Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin 23-21, 21-17, denying the latter back-to-back titles after their success in the Japan Open last week.
Yanzhe-Dongping added to their victories this year in the Malaysian Masters and Thailand Open.
China will now be in a confident mood ahead of the Paris showpiece with the pressure now firmly on their rivals in the world meet.

Thinaah received a boost ahead of the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris after rising to a career-high No. 2 in the latest world rankings as expected. Jun Hao, Letshanaa to train with Vikings ahead of worlds
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's World Championships-bound shuttlers will benefit from some Danish expertise ahead of the Paris showdown — with a training stint in Copenhagen from Aug 18-22. The national squad will spar with Denmark's top players before heading to Paris for the World Championships from Aug 25-31. National coaching director Kenneth Jonassen has welcomed the invitation from Badminton Denmark, believing the exposure will benefit men's singles players Leong Jun Hao (world No. 26), Justin Hoh (No. 45), and women's singles hopeful K. Letshanaa (No. 42). "It's a great opportunity to experience a different training environment," said Jonassen at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) on Tuesday. "It'll also help our players adapt to the European conditions before the big event. It's a win-win situation and we're grateful for this chance." Jun Hao and Justin will get valuable match practice against Danish world No. 30 Rasmus Gemke, as well as Mads Christophersen (No. 65) and Magnus Johannesen (No. 73). Top Danish stars Anders Antonsen (No. 3) and Viktor Axelsen (No. 8) are not part of the national team set-up, but could still join the training sessions. "I don't have the confirmed list, but Denmark have plenty of top players — it's a good chance for us to train in a new environment," said Jonassen. Jun Hao and Letshanaa will both be making their World Championships debuts and will be joined by regulars Lee Zii Jia (No. 33) and Goh Jin Wei (No. 45). Letshanaa is expected to gain the most from the stint, with sparring opportunities against world-class Danish shuttlers such as world No. 19 Line Kjaersfeldt, Mia Blichfeldt (No. 26), Julie Dawall Jakobsen (No. 30), and Line Christophersen (No. 32).

Pearly-Thinaah soar to world No. 2 ahead of Paris mission
KUALA LUMPUR: It's official — Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah are now world No. 2 in women's doubles, marking a career-best and Malaysia's highest ranking in the event in over a decade. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed the latest world rankings on Tuesday, with Pearly-Thinaah leapfrogging Japan's Chiharu Shida-Nami Matsuyama after their semi-final run at the China Open in Changzhou last week. It continues a stellar run for the pair, who were runners-up at the Indonesia Open in June and made back-to-back deep runs at the Japan and China Opens this month. The last time a Malaysian women's pair ranked this high was in 2009, when Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty reached world No. 1. The timing couldn't be better — the ranking boost is set to earn Pearly-Thinaah the second seeding at the World Championships in Paris (Aug 25-31), potentially setting them up for a favourable draw as they chase a historic podium finish.
