The pantry staple that the longest-living people on earth EVERY day

Daily Mail5 days ago
A leading longevity researcher says the real key to living well into your 80s, 90s, and even 100s isn't an expensive fad or diet - it's a food you probably already have in your pantry.
Dan Buettner, a National Geographic fellow who has spent decades studying the diets of the world's longest-living people, says beans are the 'true longevity food'.
In fact, he claims you should be eating them every day if you want to stay healthy and active into old age.
'The longest-living people on Earth eat beans every single day,' Buettner said in an Instagram video.
'Forget the fear-mongering around lectins and the carnivore craze - those diets aren't producing 90-year-olds still playing pickleball.'
Buettner - who has researched so-called Blue Zones, regions where people live significantly longer than average - dismissed online health trends that demonise beans, saying they're not only safe but essential.
'People say, "I don't want to eat beans because I'll fart or get bloated",' he said.
'But the reality is, if you soak beans, rinse them, cook them thoroughly - no lectins, by the way - you can avoid those problems.'
His tip for beginners was to take it one step at a time.
'Start with just a teaspoon a day if it upsets your stomach. Then the second week, two teaspoons, and the third week, three teaspoons,' he said.
'Your microbiome will grow the bacteria necessary to metabolise them. That way, everyone can work up to a cup of beans a day without any internal tumult.'
Easy ways to incorporate more beans into your diet include adding some chickpeas to your salads for extra protein and texture.
You can also blend cannellini beans into soups or dips for creaminess, or stir black beans through scrambled omelettes.
Another simple way is to toss kidney beans into chillis, tacos, or pasta sauces.
Buettner says this gradual approach allows your gut to adapt - making beans not just tolerable, but an easy daily staple.
Calling out what he dubbed 'this whole plant paradox nonsense', Buettner said it had confused people and done the 'biggest disservice' to eating.
He also challenged the notion that high-meat, zero-carb diets could match the health and longevity benefits seen in bean-rich diets.
'The New York Times interviewed me, and I challenged them to find any population on the planet that eats a carnivore diet and lives a long time,' he said.
'People say the Maasai and Inuit are healthy and on carnivore diets - but their life expectancy is 63.'
His conclusion is simple.
'If you want to be healthy in your 80s, 90s, and 100s and still playing pickleball, you don't want to be eating a carnivore diet,' he said.
Looks like the secret to a long life might just be sitting in your pantry.

Should you go to bed at 8:30pm? Here's what the experts say

I t's 9pm and Bryan Johnson is up past his usual bedtime of 8.30pm. Here, in the penthouse apartment of Michael Acton Smith, founder of the Calm app, Johnson — the tech entrepreneur who spends $2 million a year trying to reverse ageing — is telling a hand-picked audience of longevity nerds about his famously restrictive 'Don't Die' regime, which he aims to turn into 'a religion'. For Johnson, sleep trumps the hundreds of supplements, experimental medications and therapies he takes. In pursuit of being a 'sleep professional', as he calls it, he never drinks caffeine or alcohol, or has food after midday, so that 'Sleepy Bryan' can get world-class shut-eye. Thanks to his Whoop fitness tracker, this sleep pro can get feedback on his performance from the boss — his body. But, at 47, Johnson is not the only adult to go to bed at the same time as the average ten-year-old. And he's not alone in his belief that sleep is a sacrament.

Celebrity dentist warns of tooth art danger after Kim Kardashian's tooth fairy post

Celebrity dentist and star of the Real Housewives of Cheshire, Dr Hanna Kinsella, has issued a warning about using tooth art on kids and gave her top tips to key oral hygiene A celebrity dentist has laid bare concerns surrounding tooth art for kids following a recent social media post by Kim Kardashian. Taking to Instagram, Kim confided the "tooth fairy has been good to us" as she showcased her son Saint's latest tooth loss. ‌ In the post, the mum-of-four gushed over her nine-year-old child's milestone. She also shared snaps of her other kids, North, 12, Chicago, 7, and Psalm, 6, showing off their evolving smiles. ‌ In the images, the youngsters were seen sporting Hello Kitty and Louis Vuitton tooth gems and custom grills. It led to some followers questioning the safety of such accessories. ‌ Now, Dr Hanna Kinsella, has exclusively told the Mirror of the risks involved with the looks. The celebrity dentist and star of Real Housewives of Cheshire told us: "Although tooth jewels aren't in themselves dangerous you also need to consider that adhesive is used to apply them, which if used by an inexperienced person this could be dangerous if it was applied to the wrong area such as lips or gums by accident." She added: "Over time jewelled gems on teeth and caps may wear the enamel of the tooth away, increasing the risk of tooth decay and infection. ‌ "Also, dental jewels can affect your ability to clean teeth properly, meaning that it can be an ideal place for food and bacteria to hide, resulting in increased risk of tooth decay and cavities. "The adhesive that's used to stick the gem on can also lead to discolouration of the tooth. Also, it's concerning that they are often applied at home, resulting in a lack of regulation and guidance meaning there's more scope for things to go wrong and damage to the teeth to be done." ‌ However, Hanna, who is also the founder of Icy Bear Dental Care, admitted: "As a dentist and a mum, I think it's great when celebrities like Kim Kardashian shine a spotlight on children's health, especially something as often overlooked as teeth. "With such a wide reach, it's important that the advice being shared is accurate. Celebrity posts can help raise awareness, but they can also unintentionally cause confusion. "The key is starting healthy habits early and making sure we're protecting our children's smiles, and not just decorating them." And she gave her top tips to parents with youngsters for ideal oral care. It included making sure kids don't clean their teeth directly after eating due to the damage it could cause to tooth enamel. Instead, she recommends waiting 30 minutes. Hanna also urged parents to "start dental visits early". She said: "Book your child into the dentist as soon as they have their first teeth so that they can get to know the dentist and enjoy the process."
