Bergerac: How has the island of Jersey changed from the 1980s?
He was the maverick detective solving crimes across a nine miles by five island in his burgundy Triumph Roadster. And now the Bergerac reboot is beaming show-stealing Jersey into viewers' homes once more. But how has the island changed since more than 15 million people tuned into BBC One to watch the first episode in October 1981?For Jersey politician Constable Kevin Lewis, who worked on the original show for 10 years, it has changed "quite a bit", with some parts "beyond recognition".
'Not what it was'
In February, the first episode of the new series was watched live on U&Drama by about 750,000 people and then available to stream.John Nettles has been replaced by Irish actor Damien Molony, while the famous Roadster has made a triumphant comeback. But Mr Lewis, who worked as a location manager, said many of the places used on the original show were "long gone", including the house used for Jim Bergerac's father-in-law, Charlie Hungerford. He said areas like Jersey's Waterfront near the town centre had been 'completely built up' and the island's tourism industry is not what it used to be in its glamorous heyday.'I do miss the old days when we were literally humming with tourists and there were so many tourist-related businesses here," he said.'A lot of the hotels have been pulled down and turned into accommodation, which is quite sad, but it's the way of the world.'
Mr Lewis said the success of the original Bergerac series did wonders for Jersey's tourism industry, including its global reach. He explained that one of his responsibilities while working on the series was to look after visiting media - including one young journalist from Sweden, who he has been married to for 30 years. He said the new series could have a similar effect on tourism but more of the show should have been filmed on the island.'If there's a second series, I would like to see the whole series filmed in Jersey,' he said.
Speaking of a tonal difference between the more lighthearted original Bergerac and the Scandi-noir mood of the reboot, Mr Lewis acknolwedged that things were 'a little darker' for people now.He said politicians in Jersey were doing their best to keep people happy and, largely, life in Jersey was 'not too bad'.Although many were struggling with the cost of living, 'we've got beautiful beaches and we've got plenty to do', he added.
Now a Catholic deacon, Brendan Flaxman was a States of Jersey Police officer when the original series of Bergerac was filmed.Mr Flaxman joined the force in 1979, just before filming started, and was an extra in three of the show's episodes. He said it was easier for the producers to use real Jersey police officers because they already had the uniforms and cars. The original series captured a lot of Jersey's differences, he said, adding he did not think that was possible now because the island was more like the rest of the British Isles.
'Nightlife doesn't exist'
'We've got the coastlines and the rest of it, but in business life and everyday life it's pretty similar to any other place that you'd find in England,' Mr Flaxman said.Jersey was far more relaxed in the 1980s, he said, with a slower pace of life and more distinct tourism and hospitality industries.'Night life has changed drastically, I think it doesn't really exist,' he said.Alcohol law changes plea to save Jersey nightlifeUltimately, Mr Flaxman said Jersey was still a fantastic place to live, even though it comes with a high cost of living and housing.'It's a safe and secure place to live and everything's very close,' he added.
John Taylor, chairman of Jersey Pearl, opened pearl and gold showrooms in 1985 and 1986, and was offered the opportunity to buy and display the "Bergerac car" in 1987.His daughter Julia Williams, product director at Jersey Pearl, was a child at the time and remembers coachloads of people coming to the showroom to take pictures with "cardboard Jim" and sit in the 1947 Triumph Roadster.Mr Taylor said running a business in Jersey had changed drastically from the 1980s.'Really it's got an awful lot tougher… basically there were a million customers coming to to Jersey in 1985, now there's 200,000 - it's a very different market.'However, he said people have a 'terrible tendency' to say that life was better in the 80's. He said life everywhere, not just in Jersey, had changed and the island was still great.Ms Williams added that, despite challenges, Jersey was still a 'fabulous' place to be and to visit.'We're here because we love it, this is a great industry to be in… everybody is inherently proud of Jersey,' she said.

Fans are getting a bit twitchy about Alima's future on the show. Word on the street – or should we say, on X – is that her partner Blu Chegini might be tempted to make a play for Shakira Khan, leaving Alima vulnerable. Could she be the first one packing her bags? One fan tweeted: "Alima might be in danger, there's actually no one in here for her.. The system has failed her.' Another viewer chimed in: 'Sneaky feeling Alima might be the girl that's been dumped,' while a third despairingly posted: 'Producers are actually going to hell if Alima gets dumped, Blu is going for Shakira and that will mean Alima is vulnerable and dumped, producers never get anything right.' And don't forget to stick with our live blog below for all the latest gossip and the best reactions as they happen… It's going to be a belter! You can follow our live blog, below, for all the latest updates and best fan reaction ... Today, 08:42 By Allan Glen Watch: 'Too glamorous for a 9-5' One of the new contestants has already managed to annoy viewers. Shakira Khan, 22, entered the Love Island villa first alongside Meg Moore, 25, and the pair wasted no time getting to know each other. Shakira set about telling Megan that she was 'too glamorous for a 9-5' and must do something more exciting for a job. One fan wrote: "Watching shakira slag off 9-5 jobs as if she isn't an entertainer." Another posted: "Why does shakira have so much beef with 9-5ers" By Allan Glen Not a match It quickly became apparent to Love Island fans that one couple were definitely not a match last night. Meg and Dejon have been coupled up but they really didn't seem to be vibing with each other. On first impressions, it seemed that Dejon was NOT Meg's type on paper and visa versa. This wasn't helped by Meg saying she felt '50/50' about the personal trainer… But of course, by the time Maya Jama entered the villa again at the end of last night's show, they were all smiles and insisting they are the next Romeo and Juliet.

And it would seem the other girls are feeling the pressure to keep hold of their men as Shakira kick starts her day of grafting. As Dejon checks in with Shakira, Meg watches on with worry, and tells the group: 'I don't have my man, Dejon's gone - that's it!' Meanwhile, Shakira is heard saying to Dejon: 'That was a lot, it was intense, I was trying not to shake like a leaf. I've got a busy day ahead of me by the looks of it!' Later, Dejon and Meg head to the Terrace, with Dejon keen to reassure Meg. He tells her: 'You haven't got anything to worry about, you're my favourite, one thing about me is I'll always be honest with my feelings.' The next morning Toni offers Shakira a pep talk and explains: 'Just so you know, it wasn't personal, I'm rooting for else are you interested in?' 'Everyone!' Shakira replied. Toni continues: 'I'm telling you, I believe in you, you're not leaving.' Shakira added: 'I know the boys are attracted to me on a surface level, but it's about whether we click.' Toni advises: 'I think today we'll find out, don't be afraid to talk to people…I'm telling you, nothing's locked in place - I'm only safe today.' Shakira wastes no time and asks Harry for a chat on the terrace, with her teasing: 'Haza you little minx!' Harry replies: 'It's day two come on let's keep it PG.' Putting the effort in to find a new connection, Shakira then pulls Conor for a chat and he tells her: 'You surprised me, you came in with massive energy, but I feel like you're not like that, you're chill and smart.' Shakira admits: 'I love the Irish accent, it's sexy! I've never dated an Irish guy.' She also catches up with Blu telling him: 'I think it's good cause it gives everyone a kick up the bum…I think you've got a good vibe…you're very calming and I don't have to put on a bravado.' Love Island viewers threaten Ofcom complaints after very awkward scene
One Love Island couple has shocked viewers by getting down to business and locking lips on their first day as a pair on the ITV2 reality show after fears that a bombshell would split them up Love Island fans were left reeling just one day into the new series as one couple locked lips. Tensions reached a boiling point today as Shakira set her sights on finding a new connection after American bombshell Antonia stole her man. With the fear of being dumped from the island hanging over her, Shakira made it her mission to speak to as many of the boys as possible - but her female co-stars were not impressed. Meg seemed to be the most rattled after spotting her partner Dejon deep in conversation with Shakira, and nervously told the other girls: "I don't have my man, Dejon's gone – that's it!" However, the personal trainer was quick to reassure Meg that she is his favourite person in the villa, adding "You haven't got anything to worry about". Although Meg got the encouragement she needed, her counterpart Megan soon felt the pains of being on the chopping block as Shakira pulled Tommy for a chat by the pool. As things started to get more flirty between Shakira and Tommy, Megan decided she needed to make a bold move. She told the other girls: "I think I need to lipse him." Her friends were quick to egg her on, encouraging the Irish girl to lock her relationship down. Megan interrupted Tommy and Shakira's conversation, taking her man to the terrace where she admitted: "That made me a little bit jealous." One thing led to another, and Megan ended up claiming her man with a passionate kiss, much to the excitement of the Islanders down below who cheered them on. Viewers were shocked to see the stars getting physical so quickly, and took to X to share their thoughts on the scene, with one saying: "The kiss was way too soon." Another agreed: "Getting jealous and literally doing a forced kiss over someone you've known less than 24 hours is beyond unhinged." Some fans even declared they were going to make an official complaint to media watchdogs about the incident, with one saying: "Naa I'm submitting an Ofcom complaint, that kiss was too cringe, made me feel mad uncomfortable." Before coming on the ITV2 show, Megan revealed that she isn't fussy about a man's looks, saying she doesn't mind someone who is "scrawny" or has "a bit of a dad bod". Despite her easy-going nature when it comes to outward appearances, it seems that once another woman is becoming a threat to her love life, she has what it takes to go in for the kill. Meanwhile, Tommy came across as a down-to-earth lad, who admitted he has been knocked back a few times once girls heard what he did for a job. The landscape gardener said he wants a girlfriend who is caring and most importantly, doesn't take herself too seriously. He laughed: "I don't know if that's asking for too much, but I want a bit of everything. I haven't got a specific type in terms of looks, though."
