Benjamin Sesko: Newcastle make €80m bid for RB Leipzig striker

New York Times5 days ago
Newcastle United have made an offer worth €80million for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.
The bid is comprised of €75m up front with a further €5m in potential add-ons, and was tabled by Newcastle in the past 24 hours.
The Athletic reported on July 24 that Newcastle were considering a move for the 22-year-old in the event that Alexander Isak leaves the club, with the Swedish striker wanting a transfer this summer.

Newcastle have rejected a formal £110million offer from Liverpool for Isak but the Premier League champions retain a strong interest in the 25-year-old.
Manchester United are also interested in Sesko and the Slovenia striker is yet to make a firm decision on his preferred destination.
Sesko had been monitored by Arsenal before the north London side opted to pursue a move for Isak's compatriot Viktor Gyokeres, who they signed last month in a deal worth €63.5million (£54.8m; $74.2m) plus €10m.
Chelsea had also admired Sesko for several years, though they moved to sign forwards Liam Delap and Joao Pedro earlier this summer.
Sesko's Leipzig deal runs until 2029, having signed a new contract last year, which was expected to include a gentleman's agreement that would allow him to leave for the right project. His previous deal contained a €65m release clause.
The Slovenia international joined Leipzig in 2023 from Red Bull Salzburg, with both clubs owned by the Red Bull GmbH conglomerate. He has made 87 appearances for Leipzig, scoring 39 goals and providing eight assists.
He made his senior Slovenia debut the day after his 18th birthday and has scored 16 goals in 41 games, representing his nation at the 2024 European Championship.
Liverpool had previously communicated their interest in doing a deal for Isak in the region of £120million ($162m) though Newcastle's stance had been that the Swede was not for sale. Isak did not play in a friendly against Celtic or join the team's pre-season tour of Asia, with the club stating that this was down to a minor thigh problem but sources, speaking anonymously as they were not authorised to do so publicly, indicate the forward favoured being omitted with his future uncertain.
Isak is currently training alone at his former club Real Sociedad.

Analysis by German football writer Seb Stafford-Bloor
Reasonably well, but it was not the season he needed to produce to assuage the doubts.
While his overall level of performance improved in the broader sense, with Sesko becoming more connected with the rest of the Leipzig side, his goalscoring numbers were down. He scored one fewer Bundesliga goal (13) in 2024-25 than he did the year before, despite playing almost an extra 900 minutes. He was never able to replicate that seven-game streak from the previous year, either, meaning that it felt underwhelming as a result, despite some eye-catching goals (particularly against Bayern Munich at the Red Bull Arena).
But Leipzig had a bad season. They sacked Marco Rose in March, limped to their lowest finish since being promoted to the Bundesliga in 2016 and only won one game of their eight Champions League games.
That's valuable context. Nevertheless, consistency was still an issue for Sesko and the gap between his best performances and his worst, which is a historic criticism, remains too wide.

Travis Hunter to play both ways during Jaguars' preseason opener against Steelers

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen told reporters Thursday that his starters will see the field Saturday in the team's preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That, of course, includes No. 2 overall pick and two-way star Travis Hunter, who Coen said will in fact play both ways versus the Steelers. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh is taking a different approach. Longtime Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced an extensive list of starters who will be healthy scratches for the exhibition. That group includes quarterback Aaron Rodgers; wide receiver DK Metcalf; tight ends Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth; running back Jaylen Warren; cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr. and Darius Slay; defensive end Cameron Heyward and linebacker T.J. Watt, among others. "It has nothing to do with injury," Tomlin said. "They need less runway to take off, to be quite honest with you. Because of their experience and where they are in their careers, oftentimes I preserve them through this process while providing more opportunity for those that need more preparation or more opportunity to display their talents and so forth." While fans will have to wait to see what Rodgers looks like in the Pittsburgh offense, it looks like they'll get a glimpse of Hunter on both sides of the ball in Jacksonsville. Hunter, last year's Heisman Trophy winner, is listed as a starting wideout and backup cornerback on the Jaguars' first first unofficial depth chart, which the team released Monday. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound phenom is coming off a prolific final season at Colorado, where he played 753 snaps on offense, 776 on defense and 23 more on special teams in 2024, according to Pro Football Focus. In the process, he caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns, plus he ran for one additional score. At cornerback, he picked off four passes and notably forced a fumble that clinched an overtime victory against Baylor. During training camp, Jacksonville eased Hunter into practicing both positions, allowing him time to fully focus on each playbook before playing two ways in the same day. Coen went on the "The Rich Eisen Show" on Monday and suggested 80% of the Jags' offensive snaps as a potential game-by-game target for Hunter this season, with the hope of him trying to match that snap count percentage on defense as well. "We've done more offense because that was where more of the development was necessary," Coen said Monday of Hunter's work in camp, via "The Rich Eisen Show." "It's so much more natural [for him] to just go walk out on the field and play corner. That's what he's done. He can go do that. Now, there's a lot of checks, there's a lot of calls, there's a lot of different things that go to that. But offensively, we felt like there was a little bit more development that was necessary, and it's a lot more ball — just a lot more scheme and words and calls. "Every single day is completely packed, from the moment that he arrives to the moment he leaves, with making sure that he is meeting with somebody at all times." Eisen proposed that Hunter could even win both NFL Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year awards this season, and Coen agreed that "it's possible." That journey officially begins in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers. But Saturday's preseason game against the Steelers will provide a sneak peek at how Hunter's two-way skill set translates to the NFL.

Inter Milan Duo Included In 30-Player Shortlist For FIFA Ballon D'Or

Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez and wingback Denzel Dumfries are both on the thirty-player shortlist for the FIFA Ballon d'Or. The football governing body have officially released the shortlist for the award for the best player in men's football for the past season. FIFA have officially unveiled the shortlist of nominees for the 2025 Ballon d'Or. Here are the 2025 Ballon d'Or nominees!#ballondor — Ballon d'Or (@ballondor) August 7, 2025 Last year, there were two Inter players on the shortlist. They were Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu. The Argentine and Turkish international's finished 7th and 20th respectively. (Photo by) Once again, this year there are two Nerazzurri players on FIFA's shortlist for the award. Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez may not have won any silverware this year, as he had won the Serie A title and Copa America in 2024. Furthermore, the 27-year-old was not as prolific in Serie A as is his usual standard. He scored just twelve goals in the Italian top flight, down from the previous campaign in which he was the division's top scorer. However, where Martinez really shone was in the Champions League. Unlike in previous seasons, the Inter captain was absolutely outstanding and decisive in the knockouts of Europe's biggest club competition. Martinez scored decisive goals in knockout ties against Bayern Munich and Barcelona. These capped off excellent overall displays, even despite the fact that Martinez was struggling with injuries. Meanwhile, Denzel Dumfries was another player who shone for Inter in Europe. The Dutchman was arguably Inter's outstanding player in the semifinals against Barcelona. Dumfries brought goals and a nearly unstoppable outlet down the right flank for Inter throughout the season. Therefore, FIFA has decided to recognized Dumfries on the shortlist for the Ballon d'Or for the first time.

Villarreal signs midfielder Thomas Partey after he gets bail on rape charges

VILLARREAL, Spain (AP) — Spanish soccer club Villarreal signed midfielder Thomas Partey on Thursday, two days after he was granted bail on rape charges in England. Villarreal said the 32-year-old Ghana international, who became a free agent when his Arsenal contract expired in June, signed a one-year contract. The club's announcement touted Partey's on-field attributes before turning to his legal case. 'The player firmly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him. The club respects the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence and will await the outcome of the judicial process, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts of the case,' Villarreal's statement said. 'Due to the law in England in relation to ongoing proceedings the club is unable to comment further.' Partey was granted bail Tuesday after appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London charged with five counts of rape. He has also been charged with one count of sexual assault. The alleged offenses, between 2021-22, relate to three women. Villarreal added that it 'wishes to clearly reiterate its strong commitment to respect and diversity and firmly condemns any act of violence in all its forms, including gender-based violence, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, or any behavior that undermines the dignity of individuals.' The midfielder was expected to join the team at its training ground on Friday, Villarreal said. Partey's lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, has previously said he 'denies all the charges against him.' Police said the investigation was opened in February 2022 when it first received a report of rape. Partey was charged July 4 — days after his Arsenal contract expired. He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on Sept. 2. ___ AP soccer:
