‘Sharing that Ukrainian culture': Saskatoon dance group wows crowds in Italy

WATCH: A Ukrainian dance troupe from Saskatoon just returned from the tour of a lifetime in Italy, where they proudly shared their culture with groups from around the world.
A Ukrainian dance troupe from Saskatoon had the trip of a lifetime this summer as they're now returning from a tour to Italy.
The Yevshan Folk Ballet Ensemble treated crowds in Naples and Montecatini in Tuscany, Italy to their talents in July.
Given that Ukrainian dance has become a global symbol of unity and resilience in light of the Russo-Ukrainian War – the tour held a lot of significance.
'We have such a great opportunity to represent Ukraine and Canada and just dance for everybody who might not be able to right now,' Yevhen cast member Kristen Dudeck told CTV News.
The Yevshan director, Vitali Sorokotiaguine, is originally from Ukraine, as are some of the dancers.
'Culture is really important to us and keeping up with it. I'm so proud of my group coming to Italy and presenting Ukrainian culture, far from the Ukrainian homeland,' he said.
The group toured, Naples, Rome, Florence and Venice as well as other stops. It lasted two weeks but left a lifetime of memories for the 35 dancers – like Kenedee Siemens who was experiencing the tour with her three cousins.
'It has been such a privilege to share the stage with my family and also my dance family and being here in Italy, just sharing that Ukrainian culture,' she said.

Yevshan is celebrating a 65th anniversary this year. Dudeck is a twelve-year veteran of the group. She's been on many tours with the group, but the first tour to Italy is special.
'There are so many different cultures performing, it really makes us feel like we are a part of something bigger than just Canada and Saskatoon and what we do at home,' Dudeck said.
There was a parade of nations to kick off the second show in Montecatini, showcasing the many countries represented at the festival.
Some of the other countries represented included Poland, Germany, Moldova, Hungary and the Basque Country, an autonomous region between France and Spain.

The audience certainly aware of the significance of Ukraine's current struggle for freedom. During the parade, some in the crowd shouted, 'Glory to Ukraine,' in Ukrainian. The saying has become synonymous with Ukraine's current battle.

The crowds were wowed by the group's skill on the stage. The dancers became celebrities in the city – with many photo requests filled afterwards.
'We really enjoy connecting with our audiences and getting to know them and taking pictures and making connections. That's how we work as Yevshan, and we're really proud to be doing it out here,' Roman Iula, another Yevshan cast member said.
When back in Saskatoon, the dancers will be sharing their experience as cultural ambassadors for Ukrainian dance, the province of Saskatchewan and Canada.
