The sleek and luxe BMW brand has been a status symbol for years, but some car experts say, no matter how good these cars look, you're better off without them. 'The most common issues on BMWs are oil leaks, cooling system failures and failures on the turbocharger,' said Alex Black, chief marketing officer and auto expert at EpicVIN.
Black said the electronics are another frequent issue with BMW, particularly drive failures and digital gauge faults. Black said that BMW's with N20 and N55 engines (which are commonly seen on the 3 Series and X3) usually start to break down within the 70,000 to 100,000 mile range. 'They are sport vehicles, but to stay reliable, they need to have strict maintenance. Skimping on a couple of services can mean very expensive repairs later on,' Black added.

Audi
Like BMWs, Audi's are frequently driven by the upper crust, but Black said to not let that persuade you. 'Audi cars have issues with electrical and sensor faults as they age, especially cars from 2010 to 2018. A lot of the faults occur once the warranty runs out, which comes as a shock to most owners,' Black explained.
Black said that he sees a lot of claims for Audi's with faulty infotainment, frozen power windows and sensor faults. Because it's a luxury car that's made overseas, these repairs can be very pricey. Customers are often paying a lot of out of pocket costs to keep Audi's running as they get older.
Mercedes-Benz
Melanie Musson is an auto industry expert with AutoInsurance.org and called out Mercedes-Benz vehicles for consistently breaking down after five to seven years. 'New Mercedes-Benz cars are generally reliable, but after exceeding 50,000 miles, they tend to experience issues with their electrical systems failing,' Musson said. 'Since many of the mechanical parts run based on electrical information, the problems can very from the infotainment system glitching to the car not starting.'
Volkswagen
Musson said VW's are practically known for their failing electrical systems, but that's not where the issues end. 'The transmissions also have a reputation for being prone to problems. They are hard to repair. Dealership shops may be the most able to fix problems, but they're also the most expensive,' she added.

Mercedes taps the brakes on EV orders, citing low demand in the US
Mercedes-Benz says it is pausing orders for its electric vehicles as demand wanes among American drivers. A spokesperson for the German automotive company told Business Insider the decision affects all variants of the EQS Sedan, EQS SUV, EQE Sedan, and the EQE SUV. Vehicles that were scheduled for production before September 1 will still be delivered. "As a company with global activities and more than 30 plants worldwide, including in Alabama and South Carolina, Mercedes-Benz continuously optimizes its production network and uses its high flexibility to react quickly to market conditions," the spokesperson said. "We continue to assemble all of our models meant for export to global markets, as well as adapt to meet local market demand." The spokesperson said it cannot say when US order banks for EQ models will reopen "for competitive reasons." In its Q2 earnings report on Wednesday, Mercedes-Benz said the total unit sales for its battery electric vehicles (BEV) had slipped by almost 25% compared to the same time last year: 45,843 units to 35,027 units. In 2022, Mercedes-Benz began manufacturing two all-electric vehicle models — the EQS SUV and EQE SUV — at its Alabama plant. In 2023, it also added the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV. The company's decision to pause orders comes after President Donald Trump's spending bill, which he signed into law this month, eliminated the $7,500 tax credit for new electric vehicles. Industry experts previously warned that axing the tax incentive could make EVs unaffordable, affecting companies like Tesla, Cadillac, and Chevrolet. The tax incentive will end on September 30. EV sales in North America rose just 5% in the first four months of 2024, compared to 25% in Europe and 35% in China, according to EV research firm Rho Motion. During Wednesday's earnings call, a Mercedes-Benz Group representative said he thinks American interest in electric vehicles will rebound over time. "In spite of the announcement that they would take the 7,500 credit away, we don't believe that the BEV demand in the United States goes to zero," he said. "We still think that the medium to long-term adoption rate of BEVs in the US will creep upward. Maybe it will creep upward slower than if the previous regulatory trajectory had been kept in place, but nevertheless, we believe in the mid to long term it will creep upward."

McMahon, 78, driving 2024 Bentley Continental GT Speed, allegedly crashed into a BMW 430. Both cars crashed into a wooden guardrail, which sent debris into a median. A 2020 Ford Fusion, driven by a 27-year-old man in the opposite direction, crashed into the debris. There were no injuries. Police released McMahon on $500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Aug. 26. The driver of the BMW posted her account on Facebook. Barbara Doran, 72, is the founder and CEO of BD8 Capital Partners. She claimed that McMahon hit her after speeding "in and out of cars." "Lucky to have survived a horrific car crash on the way up to catch the ferry to Martha's Vineyard last Thursday morning. In January, he agreed to pay $1.7 million in fines and restitution for violating U.S. securities laws. His wife, Linda McMahon, is the U.S. Secretary of Education.
