Wauconda police treat teens to ice cream for reporting gun found on sidewalk
Police said the boys were riding their pikes near the Route 12 underpass on Route 176 when they spotted a Colt .25 caliber handgun on the ground.
Two of the boys stayed at the scene while the other two rode their bikes to the Wauconda Police Department to report it. Officers arrived at the scene and secured the unloaded gun.
Wauconda Police Chief David Wermes praised the teens for their actions.
"The bravery and common sense these young men showed is truly commendable," he said. "They turned a potentially dangerous situation into an example of community responsibility."
Chief Wermes treated the boys to ice cream at a Dairy Queen as a small gesture.

Fatal shooting of Shelby Township suspect justified, prosecutor says
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office hosted a press conference Thursday at its headquarters building in Mt. Clemens to report on and present some of the bodycam footage from a June fatal shooting of a suspect in Shelby Township. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido, who spoke at the press conference, said he has concluded the shooting was justified. "When he was ordered and commanded to stop and still went on after tase attempted, there was also another officer on the opposite side yelling gun, gun, gun. As a result of that, you have a duty to protect yourself and anyone else as a lawful officer," Lucido said. The investigation involves a June 3 incident during which Shelby Township police fatally shot a man who ran away from a traffic stop. That afternoon, the Shelby Township officer attempted a traffic stop on a white Dodge Caravan in the area of Van Dyke Avenue and 22 Mile Road. During the stop, police say the suspect, a 41-year-old Troy man who was driving the Caravan, got out and ran off. A police chase resulted behind a nearby business, and the suspect is accused of continuing to run and then drawing a weapon. The officer ordered the man to drop his weapon. Eight shots were fired, five of which struck the man, according to authorities. The suspect, who has since been identified as Thomas Antonio Jackson, 41, of Troy, died at an area hospital. Since that time, police learned the weapon involved was stolen in a 2023 auto larceny. They also learned Jackson had five warrants for his arrest, and his license was suspended. The officer who fired the shots has resumed duty. His name will not be released per department policy. Authorities say Jackson's family has retained an attorney. Iowa shooting, explosion and fire leave 2 dead and 1 critically injured
GLENWOOD, Iowa (AP) — A shooting and subsequent explosion and fire in a house in western Iowa left two people dead and a third critically injured, authorities said. Dispatchers on Wednesday night received reports of a shooting in Glenwood, a town of roughly 5,000 about 150 miles (241 kilometers) southwest of the Iowa capital of Des Moines. At least two people were shot in the home, Glenwood Police Chief Eric Johansen said in a Wednesday night news conference. An explosion shortly after the shootings led to a raging fire, Johansen said. A person of interest in the shootings and fire was taken into custody, the chief said. He would not say whether the person arrested was the one critically injured, adding that more information would be released by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, which is heading the investigation into the killings. Police have not released the names of those involved. A spokesperson with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation did not immediately return phone and email messages Thursday. 'This has been determined to be an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the community,' Johansen said. The police chief said there was a history of law enforcement being called to the house, but he did not disclose the nature of those calls.
