Former BJP Union Minister and tea-belt heavyweight leader John Barla on Thursday joined Trinamool Congress, thanking Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for giving him the opportunity to work for the people of the state. After the exodus of around 10 BJP MLAs since 2021, Barla leaving BJP is a jolt to the party ahead of 2026 assembly polls, especially in the tea belt of North Bengal.Barla has control over the tea garden belt of North Bengal, especially in Alipurduar.Subrata Bakshi, a senior Trinamool Congress leader, said, 'After Barla's inclusion in our party, our tea garden belt- level organization will be strengthened. It is a right decision by Mamata Banerjee to take him in the party.''I want to thank Didi for giving me the opportunity to work for the people in the tea garden. The tribal status to the tea garden workers has been given to West Bengal. In Assam, where a double engine government exists, it is yet to be done. Mamata Banerjee's Duare Sarkar, Lakshmir Bhandar and other social welfare schemes have benefited the people in the tea gardens,' Barla claimed and mentioned that he had faced multiple obstacles in BJP and failed to do his duty despite being a public representative.'Around 6-7 months of discussions were going on and Didi called me to work for people. I have worked for tea gardens as a Union Minister but I faced obstacles. I wanted to build a hospital but despite receiving full funds, LoP leader Suvendu Adhikari prevented it. It was 100% funding from the Centre and Railway had given go ahead for land,' Barla claimed, after joining Trinamool Congress.Slamming Adhikari for his role, Barla said, 'I wanted to make a Rs 160 crore hospital, but Adhikari blocked it. We were about to sign the MoU. But a call came from here to the ministry and the work was stopped. If development work is stopped by a party, who can work like this? Why should I be part of that party? Tea garden workers had blessed the BJP but what did they get in return?"Trinamool Congress is targeting the tea-belt of North Bengal which had voted BJP in previous Lok Sabha polls in 2019 and 2024 and also 2021 assembly polls. Barla's inclusion in Trinamool will help to penetrate in the tribal and tea-belt vote bank in 2026 assembly polls."I want to thank Mamata Banerjee, who worked for the tea gardens with schemes like Cha Sundari. Getting pattas (deeds) was a long-standing demand of the region since the Adivasi movement of 2007… In the coming days, I will surely talk to Didi about the other issues of the tea gardens. I will hold a discussion with her," Barla added.

Gujarat HC dismisses plea seeking injunction order to Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Trust from dispossessing family
Gujarat High Court (HC) on Tuesday dismissed a petition moved by a family living on a property within the Gandhi Ashram precincts, seeking injunction order to Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Trust (MGSAMT) from dispossessing them from two suit properties measuring a total of 6,000 square yards on which they claimed tenancy rights. The court of Justice Sanjeev Thaker passed the order. The MGSAMT is implementing the Rs 1,200 crore Sabarmati Ashram redevelopment project. The petition was moved by one Mohanbhai Rathod and his family members, who challenged the orders of a Small Causes Court and an appellate court rejecting their application to issue an injunction order for two properties over which they claimed tenancy rights. Originally, the plaintiff had moved a house rent petition (HRP) suit before the Small Causes Court with reference to three properties — A, B and C — situated within Sabarmati Ashram precincts. Property B is a residential accommodation and properties A and C are plots of land. They had also sought injunction orders against the concerned trust of the ashram in 2014 while claiming tenancy rights. The Small Causes Court had in 2019 granted injunction for Property B, while rejecting the application for properties A and C. This order was challenged before the appellate court which upheld the order. Following this, the plaintiff moved a revision application before the HC, which rejected the revision application while upholding the order of the appellate court. The plaintiff, among other things, had argued that the properties in dispute were handed over to the grandfather of the plaintiff by the trustee of the trust concerned somewhere in 1930. They also argued that the defendant trust accepted the rent for the all three properties since 1977. The defendant trust opposed the petition while arguing that there is nothing in the evidence, including rent receipts produced by the plaintiff, to suggest that the properties referred to in it are with respect to the property mentioned as Properties A and C.

‘We are politicians, not saints': Ajit Pawar defends decision to join NDA
Pune: chief on Tuesday justified his and colleagues' decision to rebel against uncle Sharad Pawar to join BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and said that he is not a saint to remain in the opposition and keep raising slogans against govt. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Addressing a rally orgainsed on the occasion of NCP's foundation day conclave at Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, Pawar exhorted party workers to start preparations for the upcoming civic polls. "Some people raised questions about our decision to join , claiming that NCP was founded on secular ideology. However, the party already made a compromise in 2019 by joining hands with Shiv Sena to form govt. Then why are we being blamed? Sitting in opposition and raising slogans is not enough in politics. We are not saints but politicians, and in order to address public grievances, we joined govt," he said. The deputy chief minister, however, said that he has not abandoned the secular ideology. "Our party's base is the ideology of Shahu Maharaj, Jyotiba Phule, and Babasaheb Ambedkar. Our aim to be in NDA is to ensure development. Even Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar's parties became part of the alliance, though they follow secular ideology like NCP." Scotching the rumours of a possible merger with NCP (SP), he said, "Some party functionaries may have some opinion on the issue, but such decisions are made by the senior leadership." Last week, NCP state president Sunil Tatkare denied having any such proposal for discussion in the party's core group. "We are in govt, and therefore, we have a greater responsibility to follow discipline. If any of the party workers is found involved in any anti-social activity, they will not be spared." This was NCP's 26th foundation day, but after the split in 2023, both factions have been celebrating the day separately.
