Former BJP Union Minister and tea-belt heavyweight leader John Barla on Thursday joined Trinamool Congress, thanking Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for giving him the opportunity to work for the people of the state. After the exodus of around 10 BJP MLAs since 2021, Barla leaving BJP is a jolt to the party ahead of 2026 assembly polls, especially in the tea belt of North Bengal.Barla has control over the tea garden belt of North Bengal, especially in Alipurduar.Subrata Bakshi, a senior Trinamool Congress leader, said, 'After Barla's inclusion in our party, our tea garden belt- level organization will be strengthened. It is a right decision by Mamata Banerjee to take him in the party.''I want to thank Didi for giving me the opportunity to work for the people in the tea garden. The tribal status to the tea garden workers has been given to West Bengal. In Assam, where a double engine government exists, it is yet to be done. Mamata Banerjee's Duare Sarkar, Lakshmir Bhandar and other social welfare schemes have benefited the people in the tea gardens,' Barla claimed and mentioned that he had faced multiple obstacles in BJP and failed to do his duty despite being a public representative.'Around 6-7 months of discussions were going on and Didi called me to work for people. I have worked for tea gardens as a Union Minister but I faced obstacles. I wanted to build a hospital but despite receiving full funds, LoP leader Suvendu Adhikari prevented it. It was 100% funding from the Centre and Railway had given go ahead for land,' Barla claimed, after joining Trinamool Congress.Slamming Adhikari for his role, Barla said, 'I wanted to make a Rs 160 crore hospital, but Adhikari blocked it. We were about to sign the MoU. But a call came from here to the ministry and the work was stopped. If development work is stopped by a party, who can work like this? Why should I be part of that party? Tea garden workers had blessed the BJP but what did they get in return?"Trinamool Congress is targeting the tea-belt of North Bengal which had voted BJP in previous Lok Sabha polls in 2019 and 2024 and also 2021 assembly polls. Barla's inclusion in Trinamool will help to penetrate in the tribal and tea-belt vote bank in 2026 assembly polls."I want to thank Mamata Banerjee, who worked for the tea gardens with schemes like Cha Sundari. Getting pattas (deeds) was a long-standing demand of the region since the Adivasi movement of 2007… In the coming days, I will surely talk to Didi about the other issues of the tea gardens. I will hold a discussion with her," Barla added.

West Bengal govt to allow residential consumers to opt out from power smart meters: Official

KOLKATA : Amid protests over alleged inflated electricity bills following the installation of prepaid smart meters, the West Bengal government has decided to allow residential power consumers to opt out from the system and revert to traditional devices, an official said on Tuesday. The government had on Monday temporarily suspended fresh installations of smart meters for domestic consumers, he said. "The installation of smart meters for residential consumers has been temporarily suspended, but there is no plan for a mass recall. Consumers can choose to switch back to conventional meters," the official said. The prepaid smart meter installation will continue for commercial and government establishments, the official said. The decision comes after the BJP and the Left Front have been accusing the Trinamool Congress government of "burdening households with sudden tariff hikes and opaque smart meter installation". There had been protests in districts such as Howrah, North 24 Parganas, and Bardhaman, where people alleged their bills doubled or tripled after smart meter installations. The Mamata Banerjee government had earlier approved large-scale smart meter deployment to help the cash-strapped utility, West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd, recover dues. The state government departments alone owed over Rs 1,500 crore to the discom, which has a total debt of Rs 15,400 crore in the 2023-24 fiscal, the official said. In May, Polaris Smart Metering secured a Rs 2,246-crore contract to install 2.2 million smart meters in West Bengal under the Centre's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

OBC quota deadlock dominates politics in West Bengal; new list an appeasement move, says BJP

The deadlock over the Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation continues to dominate politics in West Bengal with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership accusing the State government of 'appeasement politics' on Wednesday, a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that'backwardness'wasthe only benchmark to decide OBC categories. Addressing the State Assembly while tabling the annual report of the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes for the financial year 2024-25,the Chief Minister had said on Tuesday that a commission set up by the government is holding a survey on 50 new subsections for inclusion in the category. The Calcutta High Court in May 2024 had struck down the OBC reservation awarded to 77 categories, highlighting a complete lack of legislative policy within the 2012 scheme to classify any group as OBC. The matter is pending before the Supreme Court. On March 19, 2025, the State government told the Supreme Court that it would complete the fresh OBC survey within three months. Since the fresh list of OBC reservation is not available, the admission to colleges in the State has not started almost a month after results of Higher Secondary Examinations have been declared. The State government on Tuesday also tabled in the Assembly an interim report on the new OBC list for reservations. 'One-sided benefits' Reacting to the developments, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari took to social media and said, 'If this reservation list is not prepared with the intention of providing 'one-sided benefits' exclusively to Muslims, by deliberately depriving Hindus and other communities, then the sun rises in the west.' Meanwhile, State Education Minister Bratya Basu has assured that there will be no disruption in the academic calender due to the OBC reservation list.

Video of TMC councillor's street brawl with another woman goes viral, she blames ‘reckless driving'

After a video of a street brawl involving two women, one being a TMC councillor, went viral, Panihati municipal authorities in North 24 Parganas said the incident would be investigated, and appropriate action would be taken. Local TMC councillor Srabanti Roy, however, said she would not file a police complaint against the other woman, citing her young age, and added that the brawl happened after the young woman's Scooty hit her bike. In the viral video, the councillor is seen slapping a young woman, who retaliates by grabbing Roy's hair and hitting her. As passersby watch, the two women fight, oblivious to attempts by locals to intervene. The two women were eventually stopped from fighting by traffic police. The incident reportedly took place on Monday near Panihati Mahotsavtala Ghat. Roy is councillor of Ward No. 26 in Panihati municipality. Roy on Wednesday told mediapersons that the confrontation began when the young woman's Scooty allegedly hit her bike. Roy claimed that she dismounted to protest and warn the young woman about 'reckless driving'. 'I consider it my duty as a public representative to warn her. But the young woman responded with abuse and took my bike keys. As I protested, I was attacked,' Roy said. 'A section of the media is making a big deal out of my slapping the young woman. But in the video, you can clearly see her actions,' she said. Roy said she was not keen to file a police complaint against the woman, as 'she is young, and I don't want any repercussions for her. However, the Opposition BJP used the incident to accuse the TMC of 'goondaism' and claimed that people were 'no more afraid of the ruling party'. 'This is not a mere scuffle between two women. The lady in white salwar kameez is an elected representative. She is the TMC councillor Srabanti Roy. Good to see that people are not bowing down under TMC's fear and rather standing up against this sort of goondaism,' BJP leader Keya Ghosh wrote on X.
