Diamondbacks sign veteran catcher James McCann to 1-year deal
Arizona signed James McCann to a major league contract following his release from the Atlanta Braves, and the 35-year-old catcher joined the Diamondbacks on Monday for their game against the Chicago White Sox.
Arizona also designated catcher Aramis Garcia for assignment.
McCann agreed to a one-year contract for the $760,000 minimum while in the major leagues and $180,000 while in the minors. With 99 days remaining in the season, McCann would receive $404,516 should he remain in the majors the rest of the way.
He signed a minor league deal with the Braves on April 8 and was released Sunday, which allowed him to sign with Arizona. Over 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett, he hit .297 with six homers and 30 RBIs.
A second-round draft pick in 2011 by Detroit, McCann has played 11 seasons in the majors with the Tigers (2014-18), White Sox (2019-20), Mets (2021-22) and Orioles (2023-24). He has batted .241 over his career with 92 homers and 373 RBIs.
McCann was selected to the 2019 All-Star Game. That season with the White Sox, he set career highs in hits (120), homers (18) and RBIs (60).

(AP Photo/Pamela Smith) NEW YORK (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. homered, Spencer Schwellenbach pitched seven strong innings and the Atlanta Braves held off the New York Mets 3-2 on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series. Michael Harris II and Sean Murphy each had an early sacrifice fly for the Braves, who beat starter Paul Blackburn (0-2) for the second time in six days and improved to 4-0 against the Mets this season. Advertisement Juan Soto hit a two-run homer that pulled the Mets within one, but he struck out against left-hander Dylan Lee with runners at the corners to end the eighth. New York has dropped nine of 10, including a three-game sweep by its NL East rival in Atlanta last week. Schwellenbach (6-4) allowed consecutive singles in the third for New York's first two hits. The scoring threat ended when third baseman Austin Riley made a diving catch of Brandon Nimmo's popup near the tarp in foul territory. Nimmo walked with two outs in the sixth and Soto drove a sinker into the left-center stands for his 17th homer of the year and eighth in 21 games this month. Advertisement Schwellenbach struck out four and completed seven innings for the eighth time in 16 starts. He took over the major league lead in innings pitched with 103 2/3. Lee retired all four batters he faced for his second career save, snapping Atlanta's team-record streak of 31 games without one. It was the Braves' first save since May 16. Key moment Lee took over for Raisel Iglesias with two outs in the eighth and needed eight pitches to strike out Soto, falling behind 3-1 in the count before fanning the slugger for the third time in nine career at-bats. Key stat Since his season debut on May 23, Acuña is the only qualified batter in the majors with an on-base percentage over .500. He is 40 for 101 with 21 walks. Up next Atlanta RHP Spencer Strider (2-5, 3.89 ERA) starts Tuesday night against RHP Frankie Montas, set to come off the injured list for his Mets debut. ___ AP MLB:

Padres star Tatis sues Big League Advance in attempt to get out of future earnings deal
Eric Samulski unpacks the anticipated MLB debut for Reds pitching prospect Chase Burns, and while he should be added in all formats, managers should leave him on the bench with a difficult schedule ahead. SAN DIEGO — San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. filed a lawsuit Monday against Big League Advance in an attempt to void the future earnings contract he signed as a 17-year-old minor leaguer that could cost him $34 million. The lawsuit, filed in San Diego County Superior Court, accuses BLA of using predatory tactics to lure him into an 'investment deal' that was actually an illegal loan. BLA misrepresented itself to Tatis, hiding its unlicensed status and pushing him into loan terms banned by California's consumer protection laws, the suit alleges. Attorney Robert Hertzberg said the suit also seeks public injunctive relief to protect young athletes from being lured into such deals. Hertzberg said Tatis received $2 million up front in exchange for 10% of future earnings. Tatis signed a $340 million, 14-year contract in February 2021. Hertzberg said Tatis would also be on the hook for future earnings from any subsequent contract he might sign, unless the deal is voided. 'I'm fighting this battle not just for myself but for everyone still chasing their dream and hoping to provide a better life for their family,' Tatis said in a statement provided by a publicist. 'I want to help protect those young players who don't yet know how to protect themselves from these predatory lenders and illegal financial schemes - kids' focus should be on their passion for baseball, not dodging shady business deals.' Tatis, a son of the former big league infielder, declined further comment before Monday night's game against the Washington Nationals. Hertzberg said that even though Tatis signed the deal in his native Dominican Republic, he is covered by California consumer protection laws. BLA declined comment. 'California lawmakers have put in place serious, straightforward protections against predatory financial activity, but BLA has still disregarded our laws to pursue a business model built on prohibited, deceptive and abusive practices,' said Hertzberg, a former speaker of the California State Assembly and majority leader of the California Senate. Tatis has blossomed into one of the game's biggest stars, although he's been dogged by injuries and an 80-game PED suspension handed down by MLB in 2022. He debuted in 2019 and was an All-Star at shortstop in 2021 before being moved to right field, where he was an All-Star last year.
