The release stated the objective of the meeting which was to deliberate on the implementation modalities and explore collaborative strategies for the effective rollout of the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mandaviya, stated that the ELI Scheme represents the second step after the PLI Scheme in the direction of building an Atmanirbhar Bharat. He stated that the scheme will provide financial support to employers, enabling them to generate additional employment, particularly for the youth and described the initiative as a win-win for both employers and job seekers.
Dr. Mandaviya cited KLEMS data published by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), highlighting that over 17 crore employment opportunities were generated during the last decade. This, he noted, is a reflection of the significant economic progress made by the country, particularly driven by robust growth in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and services. He emphasized that this momentum must be sustained and further accelerated through schemes like ELI, which are designed to create quality jobs, deepen formalization, and support inclusive development, said the release.
'Labour and industry are two sides of the same coin,' the Minister said, adding that both must work in close coordination for the greater good of the nation's workforce and economy. He assured participants that procedural formalities under the scheme have been kept simple to ensure ease of access and encourage wide participation.
Union Minister also urged State Ministers to actively promote the scheme through media briefings, television and radio interviews, and other outreach platforms. He emphasized the importance of comprehensive planning and awareness-building at the grassroots level.
As per the PIB issued, the Secretary (L&E), Vandana Gurnani welcomed all participants and highlighted that the scheme is designed to support employment generation, improve employability, and extend social security across all sectors, particularly focusing on the manufacturing sector.
Vandana Gurnani informed that with a total outlay of Rs. 99,446 crore, the ELI Scheme aims to create over 3.5 crore jobs across the country over a two-year period. She further emphasised that sustainable employment is a key goal of the scheme, as the first instalment of incentives will be disbursed only after six months of continuous employment. Director (L&E), delivered a presentation outlining the scheme's framework.
Labour and Industry Ministers from Gujarat, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and several other states appreciated the initiative and assured their full cooperation in ensuring its successful implementation across their respective regions. Acknowledging the scheme's potential to boost employment opportunities, the Ministers emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts between the Centre and States. They also proposed that dedicated events, awareness programmes, and conferences may be organised at the district level in collaboration with state governments for local industries/industry chambers/industry associations etc. These efforts would help disseminate comprehensive information about the scheme, promote its adoption, and ensure that its benefits reach the grassroots level and last-mile beneficiaries. During the discussions, Dr. Mandaviya emphasised that States may consider linking of their respective employment-oriented schemes with the objectives of the ELI Scheme. (ANI)

Starmer, Modi hail long-sought India-UK free trade deal

LONDON, U.K.: In a significant step forward for post-Brexit Britain and rising global power India, Prime Ministers Keir Starmer and Narendra Modi on July 24 concluded a long-awaited free trade agreement that will dramatically reduce tariffs on key goods and deepen economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries. The signing took place at Chequers, the British Prime Minister's official country residence, where trade ministers Jonathan Reynolds of the U.K. and Piyush Goyal of India formalized the pact. The deal, years in the making, was hailed as a turning point in bilateral relations and a symbol of renewed ambition on both sides. Starmer described it as "the most substantial and economically transformative trade agreement" the United Kingdom has entered into since its departure from the European Union in 2020. Modi, echoing the sentiment, called it "a historic day" in India–U.K. relations. Alongside the trade pact, the two nations unveiled nearly six billion pounds (US$8 billion) in new commercial and investment commitments across strategic sectors such as artificial intelligence, aerospace, dairy, and clean energy. Both leaders pledged closer collaboration in defense, climate action, healthcare, and migration policy. The deal, which still requires ratification by the British Parliament, has been in negotiation since early 2022. Talks were launched initially under then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who ambitiously promised a conclusion by the Diwali festival that year. However, negotiations saw multiple delays under the former Conservative government, only gaining new momentum after the 2024 elections, which saw Modi win re-election and Labour come to power under Starmer. Under the agreement, India's average tariff on British exports will drop sharply from 15 percent to three percent. Notably, tariffs on Scotch whisky and English gin — long a sticking point — will be cut in half from 150 percent to 75 percent, and gradually reduced to 40 percent over a decade. Automotive tariffs, which currently exceed 100 percent, will fall to 10 percent under a tariff-rate quota system. The U.K. projects that the deal will boost bilateral trade by 25.5 billion pounds ($35 billion) annually by 2040 and inject nearly five billion pounds ($6.8 billion) a year into the British economy. Meanwhile, India's Trade Ministry has stated that 99 percent of Indian exports, including textiles, leather goods, and food items, will be granted duty-free access to the U.K. market. Beyond the numbers, the agreement underscores a renewed political and cultural closeness. Nearly two million people of Indian origin live in the U.K., a legacy of deep historical ties dating back to the colonial era, which ended in 1947. Starmer emphasized that shared heritage and people-to-people connections provide a strong foundation for a modern partnership. "The U.K. and India have unique bonds of history, of family and of culture," he said. "This deal marks the beginning of a new chapter — ambitious, modern, and built for the future." With a nod to the cricket rivalry currently playing out between the two nations, Modi added a lighthearted metaphor: "Cricket is a great symbol of our partnership. There may be a swing and a miss at times, but we always play with a straight bat. Together, we are building a high-scoring, enduring alliance." The agreement is seen not just as a bilateral milestone, but as a signal of Britain's growing pivot toward the Indo-Pacific and India's emergence as a central player in global trade diplomacy.

Enterprise demand to drive satellite internet; space startups gaining ground in India: Department of Telecommunications (DoT) Advisor

New Delhi [India], July 25 (ANI): Gulab Chand, Joint Wireless Advisor at Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is of the view that satellite internet services will largely be of use for enterprises, and individuals are likely to continue using their 4G and 5G services. 'I hardly find, at the personal level, any adoption of the satellite internet by the individuals. But at the enterprise level, I think satellite kind of technology would be picked up by the enterprises,' Chand told ANI on the sidelines of the 2nd IAFI Space Policy Conference. He sees enterprises using satellite internet for logistics support, monitoring of various assets, including mobile assets. 'I think it will find good use,' he supplemented. 'Satellite internet basically (in) India is like almost covered by the possesses one or two mobile (phones) with them, so almost 5G footprint is everywhere and 4G is almost covered in all the village level,' he noted. Speaking about startups in the space sector, he said that startups are already manufacturing space goods. 'Certain companies are working for making the satellite payloads, etc. Already that is happening and a lot of assistance is also being provided by the government,' he said. 'Startups have already started thinking in that line. They have started manufacturing parts of the satellite system, If not the entire satellite. They are starting with panels and certain parts of the satellite. So I think, things are going to get brighter in the future,' Chand noted. In India, the space sector was liberalised in 2020, and the private sector was allowed to carry out end-to-end space activities. Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) was created in the Department of Space for promoting, authorising and overseeing the activities of Non-Government Entities (NGEs) in the space sector. The number of Space Start-Ups in India has gone up, from just 1 in 2014 to around 266 as of the end of 2024, government data showed. The aim was to open up the space sector, which was, hitherto, a closed sector, when only the government was operating in space. 'So it's a big step taken forward,' he said. Bharat Bhatia, President of the ITU-APT Foundation of India (IAFI), speaking to ANI, said this two-day space policy conference has been one of the most successful events. 'The sessions were very detailed and very elaborate. We went through a session on D2D today, then on the 2nd day. And very intensively discussed all aspects of spectrum policy, regulation, market demand, all aspects of D2D have been discussed in a very detailed panel, with the participants from the government, from the industry, from the satellite operators, from the chip operators, and I believe this today conference itself has been one of the very successful events,' Bhatia said. 'Our aim is to bring all the stakeholders on one platform, make sure that there is a continuous dialogue between the policymakers and between the industry, between the operators, between the chip vendors, between the ecosystem. So the whole idea of this conference is to get everybody on the same platform. Thrash out whatever the issues are there and make sure that India moves forward. The session, the last session that we had today on the Viksit Bharat, that session really provided a way forward. How do we make India a developed country by 2047, and that particular session really stole the thunder, because we are trying to use the satellite technologies to make India a developed country,' he further said. According to IAFI website, it is working for last 20 years with the prime objective of encouraging involvement of professionals, corporate, public and private sector industries, R&D organizations, academic institutions, and such other agencies engaged in development of ICT sector, in the activities of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT). On Day 1 of the conference, Thursday, Bharat Bhatia had applauded the opening up of the Indian space sector, adding that it holds immense potential for job creation and new investments. 'India has opened up the space to the private sector and the way the policy has evolved, it is going to bring in a lot of new jobs, a lot of new investment,' Bhatia had said. (ANI)
