MGNREGA job cards generated in the names of deceased villagers in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal; probe ordered
An alleged fraud under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme has come to light in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal, with more than a dozen individuals shown as labourers and wages withdrawn in their names.
'The scam was unearthed in Atarasi village under the Panwasa block of Sambhal district,' officials said. The current village head, Sunita Yadav, is accused of generating job cards in the names of deceased villagers and withdrawing wages by falsely showing 'work completed' on paper.
The district administration confirmed that an investigation is under way and recovery has been initiated from the village head. "The case came to my notice around seven months ago. An inquiry was ordered at that time," Sambhal District Magistrate Rajendra Pensiya told reporters.
"When the misappropriation in any case is below 10%, we proceed with recovery from the concerned official. In this case, a misappropriation of ₹1.05 lakh was found. The recovery is being made from the village head. Other developmental works in the village are also being investigated," he added. Among those listed as labourers was a principal of an inter college.
Rishipal Singh, principal of Mulayam Singh Yadav Inter College, said, "A job card was made in my name without my knowledge. I have never worked under MGNREGA, yet my name appeared in the records and money was withdrawn. I was even called in for questioning during the inquiry."
Local resident Sanjeev Kumar said, "My grandfather Jagat Singh passed away in 2020. We had no idea that wages were being withdrawn in his name. We only found out when officials came to the village to investigate. We have heard that job cards were created in the names of nearly a dozen deceased individuals."
Nirmal Das, the main complainant in the case, alleged that job cards were made even in the name of the village head's deceased father-in-law and several of her family members. "Money from government funds were withdrawn in the name of bogus labourers. Some of these people don't even live in the village anymore. Yet their identities were used to siphon off funds," Mr. Das said.
A Central Government initiative, the MGNREGA provides at least 100 days of guaranteed employment in a year to rural households whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.

"We demand accountability and justice for the rural people of Nagaland, who are being robbed of their rightful entitlements due to this criminal exploitation," it said. The NPCC added that these funds represented the lifeblood of rural aspirations, not only driving critical grassroots-level infrastructure development, but also serving as a vital instrument to provide social security to most of the marginalised communities.

Villagers block GP office with thorns over MGNREGA irregularities
1 2 Manvi (Raichur): Residents of Sunkeshwar village in the taluk have blocked the gram panchayat office with thorny bushes since Saturday to voice their concerns over alleged irregularities in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme. They claimed that the panchayat development officer (PDO) and other officials disregarded their numerous complaints regarding the shortage of drinking water. "GP staff never come to our village. All operations are managed from Manvi town. What is the point of having a PDO who ignores the community?" one protester remarked. The villagers assert that the panchayat is ineffective and exists merely on paper. Residents also accused the panchayat of significant fraud under the MGNREGA scheme. They alleged that counterfeit job cards were issued, and falsified attendance records were created to embezzle govt funds amounting to crores of rupees. "In reality, no work was accomplished here. Yet records indicate everything is finished," expressed Chand Pasha, a villager, in frustration. In response to the situation, panchayat development officer Nagabhushan Kamble stated, "The villagers are protesting because they insist that only legitimate labourers should be employed and compensated under the MGNREGA scheme. The blockade of the GP building occurred because I refused to disburse wages to someone else under the guise of labourers."

NIA probe ordered into rowdy-sheeter Suhas Shetty's murder
MANGALURU: The Union government has ordered a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the murder of rowdy-sheeter and Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty. The development is seen as a setback to the Congress government in Karnataka which had refused to hand over the case to NIA stating that police are competent enough to investigate it. An order from Ministry of Home Affairs said the Central Government opines that a Scheduled Offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, has been committed in the instant case. It added that with regard to the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy, it is required to be investigated by the National Investigation Agency in accordance with the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008. 'Therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (5) of section 6 read with section 8 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, the Central Government hereby directs the National Investigation Agency to take up investigation of the aforesaid case,' said the order. Suhas Shetty, an accused in two murders, was travelling in a car when he was hacked to death by a gang of persons in Bajpe Police Station limits near Mangaluru city on May 1.
