Based on Toyota's newly developed TNGA GA-K platform, the upcoming Lexus ES measures 5 140mm in length and 1 920mm in width, making it 165mm and 55mm longer and wider than the seventh iteration. The wheelbase has been stretched by 80mm to 2 950mm.

Engineered to deliver 'effortless' performance and efficiency, the eighth-generation ES was unveiled with a quartet of powertrains, split between hybrid (HEV) and battery-electric (BEV). The former includes the 300h and 350h, which comprises 2l and 2.5l naturally aspirated four-cylinder internal combustion engines (ICE) supplemented by an electric motor for peak power outputs of 145kW and 182kW, respectively. Both petrol-electric options send drive to either the front wheels or all four corners via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The 350e and 500e, the latter of which available in all-wheel drive, BEV derivatives' single and dual electric-motor configurations produce 165kW and 252kW, respectively. Lexus claims all-electric operating ranges of 'approximately' 685km (350e) and 610km (500e), and 0-100km/h sprint times of 8.9 (350e) and 5.9 seconds (500e).
As a reminder, the current ES line-up, which is priced from R834 800, is available in South Africa with the firm's 250 and 300h powertrains. The former and latter feature a 2.5l naturally aspirated four-pot and, in the 300h, the petrol unit is coupled with an electric motor. The 250 and 300h produce 152kW and 160kW respectively.

Toyota and Daimler to merge truck subsidiaries

TOKYO - Shares in Hino Motors, the truck-making unit of Japanese auto giant Toyota, plunged on Wednesday after it announced a merger with a subsidiary of Germany's Daimler Truck. The move is seen as an attempt to stay competitive at a time when global automakers are faced with US trade tariff uncertainty and new Chinese rivals. The companies had said Tuesday that the integration of Hino and Daimler's subsidiary Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus would "establish a new strong Japanese truck powerhouse". They said they aimed to complete the merger, on an equal footing under a listed holding company, by April 2026. Hino Motors shares were down more than 12 percent in morning trade on Wednesday. "Daimler Truck and Toyota will each aim to own 25 percent of the (listed) holding company of the integrated Mitsubishi Fuso and Hino," a joint statement said. "The companies aim to improve business efficiency in areas such as development, procurement and production," it said. "They expect to significantly enhance the competitiveness of Japanese commercial vehicle manufacturers and strengthen the foundation of the automotive industry in Japan and Asia." The new company will work to develop models using new fuels and technologies, from electric trucks and hydrogen-powered trucks to autonomous driving systems. Analysts say Japanese firms have lost ground in the EV market in recent years by focusing more on hybrid vehicles, industry analysts say.

Witbank drag racer Leon du Plooy sets bold new South African record

A little under three decades ago when a twenty-something Leon du Plooy hoped in a drag racing vehicle for the first time, he had no idea that he'd become a South African 'legend'. Du Plooy, who hails from the northern City of Witbank in Mpumalanga, became the first South African to cross the quarter mile trap in 7.5 seconds in a bakkie. His Nissan 1400 bakkie, which is the country's most beloved utility vehicle aside from the Toyota Hilux, is also the fastest 4 cylinder drag racing vehicle in the country. Du Plooy set a new record at Tarlton International Raceway on Saturday, May 31, in front of a sold-out crowd at the Mecca of South African drag racing. 7.57 seconds at 290km/h was his fastest time of the day. What's in it? Now, let's just state at the outset that this is not some Nissan 1400 that anyone can jump in and start driving. The engine is made of a range of custom parts, from the pistons, crank and rods. The base structure that Leon used is a Toyota twincam 16 valve engine, that comes out of a Corolla RSI. It's been fitted with custom, aftermarket parts from the United States, which is also where Du Plooy sourced the G-Force 2000 gearbox from. The G-Force 2000 gearbox is one of the most expensive parts within this machine.

Trump to sign resolutions nixing California's EV rules

The signing is a win for General Motors, Toyota, car dealers and other carmakers that heavily lobbied against the rules, and a blow to California and environmental groups that said the requirements are essential to ensuring cleaner vehicles and cutting pollution. California announced a plan in 2020 to require that by 2035 at least 80% of new cars sold be electric and up to 20% plug-in hybrid models. California governor Gavin Newsom has vowed to challenge the repeals in court, saying the action by Congress is illegal and would cost California taxpayers an estimated $45bn (R796bn) in additional health care costs. Since 1970, California has received more than 100 waivers under the Clean Air Act. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, representing GM, Toyota, Volkswagen Hyundai Stellantis and others, previously praised the repeal. "The fact is the EV sales mandates were never achievable," the group's CEO, John Bozzella, said. "In reality, meeting the mandates would require diverting finite capital from the EV transition to purchase compliance credits from Tesla." These are the latest actions in recent months taking aim at electric vehicles. A separate bill passed by the US House of Representatives in May would end a $7,500 (R132,604) tax credit for new EVs, impose a new $250 (R4,420) annual fee on EVs for road repair costs and repeal vehicle emissions rules designed to prod carmakers into building more EVs. It would also phase out EV battery production tax credits in 2028.
