Engineered to deliver 'effortless' performance and efficiency, the eighth-generation ES was unveiled with a quartet of powertrains, split between hybrid (HEV) and battery-electric (BEV). The former includes the 300h and 350h, which comprises 2l and 2.5l naturally aspirated four-cylinder internal combustion engines (ICE) supplemented by an electric motor for peak power outputs of 145kW and 182kW, respectively. Both petrol-electric options send drive to either the front wheels or all four corners via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The 350e and 500e, the latter of which available in all-wheel drive, BEV derivatives' single and dual electric-motor configurations produce 165kW and 252kW, respectively. Lexus claims all-electric operating ranges of 'approximately' 685km (350e) and 610km (500e), and 0-100km/h sprint times of 8.9 (350e) and 5.9 seconds (500e).
As a reminder, the current ES line-up, which is priced from R834 800, is available in South Africa with the firm's 250 and 300h powertrains. The former and latter feature a 2.5l naturally aspirated four-pot and, in the 300h, the petrol unit is coupled with an electric motor. The 250 and 300h produce 152kW and 160kW respectively.

HKS unleashes track-focused aero kit for Toyota GR Yaris

The Toyota GR Yaris has carved out a niche in the hot hatch segment based on its celebrated performance and raw, direct connection to Gazoo Racing's rallying heritage. If that hasn't been enough, Japanese tuning firm HKS has introduced a raft of aerodynamic upgrades dubbed the Type-S Gen2. Looking for a new or used Toyota? Find it here with CARmag! Looking like something out of a Need For Speed game, the kit isn't only cosmetic but is designed to tangibly improve the car's performance on the track through enhanced downforce. Central to the Type-S Gen2 package is a redesigned front splitter. Crafted from fibreglass with carbon fibre overlays, HKS claims this component aims to optimise airflow, generating increased downforce at the front axle. The result is improved steering precision and greater stability when cornering at high speeds. Complementing the splitter are new side skirts and a very hard-to-miss carbon fibre rear wing, which features unique mounts to ensure maximum aerodynamic efficiency. No figures on improvements have been revealed by the tuner, but HKS has hinted at a noticeable improvement in the GR Yaris' on-track handling characteristics. Related: From Couch to Competition – 2025 Toyota GR Cup Part 2 The reason behind this is that a GR Yaris equipped with these aerodynamic modifications is currently competing in the Japanese Super Endurance series. This real-world application in a competitive motorsport environment provides a rigorous proving ground for the components, validating their effectiveness under extreme conditions. However, the kit's availability is currently limited. Enthusiasts outside of Japan will be disappointed to learn that the HKS Type-S Gen2 package is presently exclusive to the Japanese market, with no immediate plans for international sales. For those in Japan, the front splitter retails for approximately ¥165 000 (around R20k), while the side skirts and rear wing are priced at roughly ¥132 000 each (approximately R16k). Denny Hamlin pulls out third win of year at Michigan

Denny Hamlin is on baby watch, but he had one more work day to take care of Sunday. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver made his way past William Byron with four laps to go and had enough gas to hang on and win the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan. Racing a snappy purple No 11 Toyota, Hamlin passed Byron's No 24 Chevrolet with four circuits left on the 3.21km track, and Byron ran out of fuel coming to the white flag. The Hendrick Motorsports driver landed in 28th place. In delivering Toyota its second straight MIS win, Hamlin beat Ford's Chris Buescher by 1.09 seconds for his third Cup Series win this season and third at the Michigan track. His last victory there came in June 2011. "I wanted to get the lead, (Byron) was doing a great job defending," Hamlin said before taunting the crowd's mixture of cheers and boos. "Daddy, I'm sorry, but I beat your favourite driver, folks." When asked who the driver was, Hamlin, who led only five laps, said: "All of them." Hamlin and fiancée Jordan Fish are expecting their third child. Hamlin said he was prepared to leave the race if she went into labour during the first 50 laps. Hamlin won for the 57th time in his 701st career race, becoming only the 10th driver to win after making 700 starts. "We've been so fast the entire year but haven't been finishing for one reason or another," said Hamlin, 44. "It feels good to come here to Michigan, where we've been so close over the years, and get a victory. Such a gratifying day to restart 11th, 12th, something like that, and then drive to the front." Ty Gibbs and Bubba Wallace were third and fourth, respectively. Gibbs is Hamlin's JGR teammate and Wallace drives for 23XI Racing, which Hamlin co-owns. Kyle Larson finished fifth. Byron grabbed the lead away from polesitter Chase Briscoe on lap 12 of Stage 1, but Buescher passed Byron on lap 36 of the 45-lap segment and earned his first stage win of 2025. Byron finished second while Hamlin, Briscoe and Josh Berry completed the top five in the incident-free stage. The first caution for cause waved on lap 60 when Noah Gragson and John Hunter Nemechek, running inside the top 20, spun on the back stretch to bunch up the field again, but seven laps later a hard wreck occurred in turn 2. Riding in the bottom lane, last week's winner Ryan Blaney tapped Cole Custer's No41, triggering a mess that ended up with Alex Bowman's No 48 Chevrolet crashing violently nose-first into the wall and Briscoe spinning after being clipped by Custer's Ford. That prompted a red-flag condition for cleanup. "Yeah, that hurt a lot," Bowman said. "It was probably top of the board on hits I've taken, and, unfortunately, I've taken a lot of hits." As Stage 2 neared its end, Blaney slapped the wall on his own in the No 12 Ford and spun down the speedway, an unfortunate fifth caution for Christopher Bell, who pitted shortly before Blaney's mishap. The closing laps of the stage featured a spirited battle between Byron, Tyler Reddick, Austin Cindric and Carson Hocevar. Byron made the winning pass on the final lap for the stage win while Cindric was able to hold off Michigan native Hocevar for second. Hocevar took the point on lap 152, but the Spire Motorsports driver suffered a flat left rear tyre with 19 circuits left, turning over the lead to Byron. Hocevar finished 29th.

Ogier edges Tanak to win in Sardinia, Evans stays top

Sebastien Ogier clinched a record fifth Rally Italy victory on Sunday, fending off Hyundai's Ott Tanak by 7.9 seconds after a tense final stage in Sardinia, while Toyota teammate Elfyn Evans stayed top of the championship standings. Ogier, with co-driver Vincent Landais, completed the sixth round of the season in three hours 34 minutes and 24.5 seconds to secure the Frenchman's third win in four starts in a part-time campaign. The eight-times world champion was beaten by Tanak on the island last year by 0.2 seconds after a final-stage puncture, but this time Ogier stayed composed and took the win despite a late wobble. Ogier had built a 17.1-second cushion heading into the Wolf Power Stage, but the 41-year-old overshot a tight, rutted corner in the final kilometres. This forced him to stop and reverse after his car refused to turn, cutting his advantage by more than half in a tense finale. "In the ruts I couldn't turn the car," Ogier explained. "There was no speed at all, so I didn't try to force it and hit it. I preferred to stop and reverse. But yeah, not ideal. It was enough to win." The victory follows hot on the heels of his Rally Portugal triumph and sent Ogier ro second in the championship with 114 points to Evans' 133. Toyota, who have won every rally so far this year, also tightened their grip on the manufacturers' race with 312 points to Hyundai's 243. "There are many places I've won several times," said Ogier. "It's a type of rally I like, where precise driving is needed, but also smoothness for tyre management. Thanks to the team, great turnaround after Portugal in terms of speed and set-up, so good job." Tanak pushed hard in the final stage but fell short, while Kalle Rovanpera, clawing his way up from fifth during Saturday's stages, completed a double podium for Toyota in third, 50.5 seconds behind Ogier. The Finn dropped to third overall, one point behind Ogier, with Tanak fourth on 108. Evans and Takamoto Katsuta rounded out a strong showing for Toyota, taking fourth and fifth respectively. Hyundai's reigning champion Thierry Neuville, fifth in the championship on 83 points, took four points from the Power Stage and one from the "Super Sunday" format after returning after Friday's retirement. The next round is in Greece from June 26 to 29.
