Tips for preparing the most dreaded of all speeches: the wedding toast

Tips for preparing the most dreaded of all speeches: the wedding toast

Beginner
Be brief:
It doesn't matter what else you do or don't do, this is priority number one. Time is relative, and it passes much more slowly for the audience than it does for the performer. You can be 'that person' who cries, or flubs the Browning sonnet, or forgets the groom's name, or has a sneezing fit in the middle of the toast, and be remembered fondly. You
cannot
be that person who goes on for 10 minutes and be remembered fondly.

Be clean:
This, no matter how well you know the wedding couple. No matter how outrageous their sense of humor is. No matter how much their wedding may feel like a party rather than a sacred occasion. Just don't take the risk of a double-entendre, ribald story, or even a reference to a private joke ('and we all know how Bill loves his Turtle Wax . . .') that you don't think anyone else will get. Just don't do it.
Intermediate
Find a peg:
Start with a story about one or both members of the couple, or a poem or song lyrics that remind you of them or that they love, or a Bible verse, or what have you. Yes, of course you've known Pat all your life and are so delighted that Pat and Chris have found each other. Everyone feels that way at Pat and Chris's wedding; that's why they're there. So start off with something a little more specific for your toast than generalized good wishes.

Find a hook:
The peg is the image you start your toast with. The hook is the thing that pulls it into the present: 'I'll never forget that treehouse that Pat and I built together, and I know the home that Pat and Chris will make together will be just as creative and fun-filled as that treehouse was—and probably feature fabulous wood flooring!' The hook can be a comment about the beauty of the ceremony, a tribute to the partner you know the least well, a wish for the future, or so on.
Advanced
Figure out your character:
Usually, there are several toast-makers at a wedding. As the date nears, find out how you fit into the lineup. Are you the Respected Patriarch? The College Buddy? The Future Mother-in-Law? The Bratty Little Brother? Ideally, toasts should balance the sentimental and the humorous, the serious and the silly, and show a rounded picture of the wedding couple—both as a couple and as individuals. Figure out your best contribution. And if you know you're going to be following Uncle Lou Longwind, be willing to take one for the team and make your toast even shorter. Express your full sentiments to the wedding couple later—they'll be grateful for your restraint.
Go against type:
Depending on your role in the toast lineup, you might find it effective to serve your toast with a twist. Everyone expects the English professor to open up with Shakespeare or Browning—how much more surprising, and therefore moving, to hear a simple childhood story and heartfelt wish for happiness. Everyone expects the Respected Patriarch to intone words of wisdom—what if he told an embarrassing (clean!) story from his own nuptials instead? Don't be afraid of being a cliche, but don't be afraid to do the unexpected, either.

‘Adolescence' soars past ‘Stranger Things' to become Netflix's new No. 2 original show (behind only ‘Wednesday')

Adolescence now ranks at No. 2, dethroning Stranger Things 4, which debuted in 2022. The only Netflix original TV show that has received higher views throughout history is Wednesday Season 1, also from 2022. Interestingly enough, Wednesday, Adolescence, and Stranger Things all tell stories about troubled teens. Some of the other original programs that Adolescence soared past in recent weeks include Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Bridgerton Season 1, The Queen's Gambit, Bridgerton Season 3, The Night Agent Season 1, Fool Me Once, and Stranger Things 3. Here is the current most popular list: Wednesday: Season 1 (2022) — 252.1 million views Adolescence: Limited Series (2025) — 141.2 million views Stranger Things 4 (2022) — 140.7 minutes views Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story: Limited Series (2022) — 115.6 million views Bridgerton: Season 1 (2020) — 113.3 million views The Queen's Gambit: Limited Series (2020) — 112.8 million views Bridgerton: Season 3 (2024) — 106.0 million views The Night Agent: Season 1 (2023) — 98.2 million views Fool Me Once: Limited Series (2024) — 98.2 million views Stranger Things 3 (2019) — 94.8 million views Adolescence is a four-episode crime drama co-created and -written by Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire) and Jack Thorne. Graham also stars as Eddie Miller, the father of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), who is arrested for allegedly stabbing a classmate to death. Each episode is directed by Philip Barantini and filmed in a single take as viewers learn more about Jamie's crime from the viewpoints of the police, his psychiatrist, and his family. The program premiered on March 13 with a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90 score on Metacritic. It drew 24.3 million views in its first four days of availability to debut at No. 1 on the Netflix English TV charts, and also reached the top spot in 71 countries. In Week 2, Adolescence continued to rise as word-of-mouth took control and people started comparing it to another British limited series, Baby Reindeer. In Week 3, it topped the English TV charts once more with an additional 30.4 million views, reaching the top 10 in all 93 countries the top 10 is available. In Week 4, the program became the fourth most-watched Netflix original TV show of all time in the English language. And in Week 5, it entered the top three. "It's saving lives ... that feels quite special," Cooper told Gold Derby about the success of the program. "Adolescence is teaching kids not to do that," the teenager added, referring to toxic social media behaviors. To that end, U.K. schools will begin screening the series for students. According to Gold Derby's Emmy odds, Adolescence is now out front to win Best Limited Series, Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor for Cooper, and Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress for Erin Doherty as the child psychologist. Graham is in second place for Best Movie/Limited Actor, behind only Colin Farrell (The Penguin). Other cast members looking to score Emmy bids include Ashley Walters as the detective inspector, and Christine Tremarco as Jamie's mother. Netflix drama Adolescence set to become the streamer's second most-watched English-language show, beating out Stranger Things season 4

Adolescence looks set to become Netflix's second most-watched English-language show of all time, beating out Stranger Things season 4. In the 76 days it's been available to stream so far, the West Yorkshire-based crime drama has pulled in 140.2 million views. 'Premiere windows' tend to be considered 91 days from release date, in which time Stranger Things' fourth chapter earned 140.7 million views. It's almost certain, then, that Adolescence will rack up the extra 500,000 views needed to surpass the hit sci-fi horror in two weeks. Despite its huge success, the show is unlikely to nab the top spot, which is currently occupied by Addams Family spin-off Wednesday, having pulled in a whopping 252 million views during its premiere window. In comparison, South Korean thriller Squid Game season 1 got 265 million views in the same time frame. Starring Ashley Waters, Erin Doherty, Owen Cooper, and Stephen Graham, Adolescence opens with 13-year-old Jamie being arrested for the murder of his classmate Katie Leonard. Over the course of four episodes, all of which play out in real time, viewers not only learn whether Jamie did what he's being accused of but what happened in the run-up to the violent attack and how his family are coping with the fallout. On March 31, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced plans to make the series free to watch in secondary schools, in a bid to spark conversations and raise awareness about online safety, toxic masculinity, and bullying. "There isn't an obvious policy response which will answer all of these questions", he told BBC political editor Chris Mason. "It's much broader than that. It's a cultural issue, and therefore we're going to have to look more broadly, work as a society on this, and discuss it." Adolescence is streaming now.
