Bahrain Named World's Cleanest Airport in 2025 by Skytrax
Bahrain International Airport has achieved global recognition as the World's Cleanest Airport for 2025 in the category of airports handling up to 25 million passengers, according to the UK-based air transport rating organization, Skytrax. This prestigious distinction places Bahrain at the forefront of global aviation hygiene standards, further reinforcing the Kingdom's commitment to excellence in travel infrastructure and passenger experience.
Japan also celebrated significant success, with Tokyo Haneda Airport earning the title of the World's Cleanest Major International Airport, topping the global list for cleanliness among high-traffic terminals. The Japanese capital's gateway outshined other prominent hubs, while Centrair Nagoya, Tokyo Narita, Kansai, and Osaka Itami were also ranked among the cleanest airports in the world across both main and mid-sized categories.
In Skytrax's World's Cleanest Airports 2025 (Up to 25 Million Passengers) list, Bahrain led the top 10, followed by:
Bahrain International Airport
New Chitose Airport (Japan)
Centrair Nagoya (Japan)
Osaka Itami Airport (Japan)
Helsinki-Vantaa (Finland)
Adelaide Airport (Australia)
Cam Ranh International Airport (Vietnam)
Quito International Airport (Ecuador)
Houston Hobby Airport (USA)
Brisbane Airport (Australia)
Singapore Changi Airport
Meanwhile, Singapore Changi Airport reclaimed the top honor as the World's Best Airport 2025, receiving multiple accolades including the World's Best Airport Dining, Best Airport Washrooms, and Best Airport in Asia. This marks the 13th time Changi has secured the leading title at the World Airport Awards, held last month at the Passenger Terminal Expo in Madrid.
Yam Kum Weng, CEO of Changi Airport Group, expressed gratitude for the continued recognition:
'Changi Airport is honoured to be named by Skytrax as the World's Best Airport for the 13th time. It is indeed gratifying to receive this recognition, which certainly encourages us to continue striving to provide the best travel experience.'
Doha's Hamad International Airport, previously a three-time winner of the World's Best Airport title, was ranked second overall in 2025 and won awards for the World's Best Airport Shopping and Best Airport in the Middle East.
Tokyo Haneda Airport
Tokyo Haneda Airport claimed third place globally in overall rankings, followed by:
Singapore Changi
Seoul Incheon
Hong Kong International
Centrair Nagoya
Tokyo Narita
Kansai International
Taiwan Taoyuan
Zurich Airport
Dubai International (DXB)
The dual triumph for Bahrain and Japan in cleanliness rankings highlights the rising importance of passenger hygiene satisfaction, especially in a post-pandemic era. These awards also serve as a testament to national and airport-level efforts in elevating global travel standards.

Bahrain Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka among top global attractions
TDT | Tokyo Four months after opening at Expo 2025 Osaka, the Bahrain Pavilion, themed 'Connecting Seas', continues to showcase the Kingdom's cultural and civilisational heritage in Japan, blending tradition with innovation and welcoming visitors from around the world. Recognised by global architectural platform ArchDaily as one of the top ten must visit pavilions, it offers an immersive journey combining sensory exhibits, architecture inspired by Bahrain's maritime history and Japanese woodworking, a café blending Bahraini and Japanese flavours, an economic showcase of the Kingdom's future, and a heritage themed gift shop. Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) and Commissioner General of the pavilion, said the participation reflects Bahrain's vision to enhance its cultural and economic presence globally. He noted preparations are under way for Bahrain's National Day at the expo in September to highlight the Kingdom's maritime heritage, artistic creativity, and cultural and economic resilience. Located in the 'Empowering Lives' zone, the 995-square-metre pavilion stands four storeys high with sea views. Designed by Lina Ghotmeh, it is built mainly from wood and cooled naturally by sea breezes, making it one of the most sustainable structures at the expo. The multi sensory exhibition, curated with artists and institutions including Shepherd Studio, Sissel Tolaas, Hassan Hujairi, and La Méduse, explores themes of trade, crafts, industry, pearls, and the environment. The café, led by award winning Bahraini chef Tala Bashmi, serves seasonal menus fusing Bahraini and Japanese ingredients. Staff and volunteers wear designs by Lulwa Al Amin, featuring coastal inspired prints and embroidery. Expo 2025 Osaka runs until October 13. Bahrain's National Day at the pavilion will be celebrated on September 18.

Mystical charm of Salalah
melissa@ A Bahrain-based adventurer and overlander has added another feather to his wanderlust hat this summer by completing a 'soul-stirring' expedition to Oman. V Krishna Das, an Indian expatriate and business development manager, clocked in 4,500km in five days, exploring the beauty of Salalah. Overlanding or four-wheel-drive touring is a way of 'self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations' where the journey alone is the principal goal. 'Salalah during the Khareef season is breathtaking with its misty mountains, vibrant greenery and rhythmic pitter-patter of rain,' the 38-year-old told GulfWeekly. 'It felt like stepping into another world. Oman stands apart from other Gulf countries with its raw, untouched beauty. While cities like Dubai and Doha dazzle with modernity, Salalah offers a serene, almost mystical charm,' he added. 'Traversing the shifting terrains of Saudi Arabia and the UAE before entering Oman felt like peeling back the layers of the Gulf's diverse geography, but it was Salalah that truly stole the show.' Some of the places he covered during this trip were Ittin mountain, a scenic area with winding roads, foggy vistas, and cosy cafés nestled in the hills; Sheeheet sinkhole, a hidden gem and geological wonder in Dhofar region, boasting dramatic rock formations, and Marneef Cave and Blowholes where seawater shoots up when the tide is high. 'The landscape is so diverse in Oman and over 2,000km of driving revealed stunning contrasts – from golden desert dunes to fog-draped cliffs,' he recalled. 'Driving through the Rub'al Khali desert was an unforgettable experience. The vastness of this sandy expanse, with its endless horizon and shimmering dunes, was both humbling and awe-inspiring. 'On my visit to Ittin, I stayed in my car, surrounded by deep mist. There was zero visibility and nonstop rain, which was surreal – like being wrapped in nature's quiet embrace,' he added, talking about the highlights of the trip. Despite the excitement, Krishna found navigating the mountains through heavy fog and rain quite challenging. 'I relied heavily on offline maps and pre-planned fuel stops, especially in remote stretches. Staying flexible with my itinerary helped me adapt to weather delays and changing road conditions,' he explained. The adrenaline junkie, who has been living in Bahrain for 17 years with wife Soja and children, Veena, eight, and Advaith, three, started overlanding in 2014. He and his friend Pramod Ramachandran covered eight countries in the region over six days in a Mitsubishi Pajero. Since then, he has switched to travelling alone as he feels it helps him connect with his surroundings better. So far, he has visited several countries, including Yemen, Türkiye, Malaysia and Thailand, which are recorded on his YouTube channel @Das_VK_Vlogs. Krishna hopes to revisit Oman and experience the 'warmth and hospitality' of the Omani people once again. 'The people were so nice, especially in the smaller villages, which added a deeply personal touch to the adventure. Their kindness and quiet pride in their heritage were truly moving,' he said. 'I would like to thank Noushad Rawther, who guided me to all these incredible spots. His support made this journey more memorable,' he added.

Lufthansa to Relaunch Riyadh–Munich Route
Lufthansa is set to expand its presence in Saudi Arabia by around 50 per cent with the relaunch of its non-stop Riyadh–Munich service from October 27, 2025. The route, last operated in 2017, will connect the Saudi capital directly to the airline's five-star Skytrax-rated Munich hub, enhancing links to Lufthansa's global network. Operating every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, Flight LH641 will depart Riyadh at 6.25 am, arriving in Munich at 10.25 am — offering ideal onward connections to more than 130 destinations across Europe, America, and Asia. The return service will operate on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, departing Munich at 9.45 pm and arriving in Riyadh at 4.50am the following morning. The service will be operated by the Airbus A350-900, seating 293 passengers across Business, Premium Economy, and Economy Class. Economy return fares will start at SR1,495 ($399). This new connection complements Lufthansa's daily Riyadh–Frankfurt service and boosts total Lufthansa Group flights to Saudi Arabia to 25 per week, including operations by ITA Airways and Eurowings. Across the Middle East, the Lufthansa Group now serves the region more than 120 times weekly. Sadiq Mohamed, General Manager Sales Saudi Arabia at Lufthansa Group Airlines, said: 'Munich is one of the most popular destinations in Western Europe for many of our customers. The airport itself is a relaxing, convenient, and beautiful gateway, whether travellers are connecting onward or visiting the city and its stunning surrounding region, known for its castles and picturesque lakes near the Alps.' The renewed route comes as demand for Riyadh flights grows, supported by Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 agenda, major global events such as Expo 2030 and the FIFA Men's World Cup 2034, and the city's ongoing economic transformation.
