You Can See 2 Meteor Showers at Once This Week. How to Catch a Glimpse

CNET28-07-2025
While meteor showers happen all year, a rarer occurrence is having two meteor showers that peak at the same time. It'll happen this week, on Tuesday.
The shooting star show comes courtesy of the Alpha Capricornids and Southern delta Aquariids meteor showers. The former is already happening and runs until Aug. 12, with a peak on Tuesday. Southern delta Aquariids will start on Monday, peaks early on Tuesday and runs until Aug. 12 as well. That means for one evening, the two meteor showers are peaking at the same time, giving stargazers a much better chance at catching a shooting star.
Of the two, the Southern delta Aquarids is typically the larger meteor shower, tossing upward of 25 meteors per hour during its zenith. Alpha Capricornids is a lesser meteor shower, with about five per hour on average. Combined, they'll output an estimated 30 per hour.
See 2 meteor showers at once
Since the meteors are coming from two different points in the sky, you would think spotting meteors from both would be difficult, but that is far from the truth.
Alpha Capricornids, which hails from the 169P/NEAT comet, originates from the Capricornus constellation. It will rise from the eastern skies across the continental US around sunset and streak across the southern sky, setting in the western sky at sunrise.
For the Southern delta Aquariids, its radiant — the point from which its meteors seem to originate — is the Aquarius constellation. Aquarius is right next to Capricornus. That means it also rises out of the eastern horizon, streaks across the southern sky, and sets in the western horizon around dawn.
If you have trouble finding either of them, Stellarium's free sky map will help you hunt them down. Set the time, date and location, and you're off to the races. Once you find one, the other one is essentially right there next to it.
Tips on watching meteor showers
As per the norm, the tips here are the same as they are for the aurora borealis and planet parades. Light pollution and weather are your two biggest enemies. Since you can only do anything about one of those, let's focus on light pollution. You'll want to drive as far away from the city and suburbs as possible, as the light pollution will make it difficult to see the dimmer meteors. The farther away you are, the better, as even suburban light pollution can obfuscate most meteors.
Once out there, you just have to sit and wait. Since the constellations will move across the south as you watch, you may have to rotate your chair if you're out there for a while. Otherwise, a pair of binoculars may help. Telescopes aren't recommended, as they obscure your field of view and may actively obstruct your ability to see meteors.

Perseid meteor shower nears its 2025 peak, but viewing might be 'hampered'

It's that time of year again, and the peak of what's revered as the 'best meteor shower of the year' is approaching. The Perseid meteor shower is considered the best of the year due to how many meteors viewers can see, about 50 to 100 per hour, according to NASA. Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through streams of debris left behind by comets and asteroids, according to the Natural History Museum in London. A meteor shower peak occurs when Earth passes through the thickest part of the debris stream; that's when viewers see the highest rate of meteors. Here's more on the Perseids, how to check them out, and why this year's display could be diminished. When is the Perseid meteor shower? While the Perseid meteor shower is active from July 17 to Aug. 23, the peak is between Aug. 12 and 13 during pre-dawn hours, NASA said. It may be possible to see meteors from the shower as early as 10 p.m. though, according to NASA. Why this year's Perseid shower might be 'hampered' During this year's peak on Aug. 12, the Perseid meteor shower may be "hampered" due to an 84%-full moon, NASA said. "Unfortunately, this year the Moon is nearly full on the peak night, and its glare will wash out all but the brightest meteors," NASA wrote. 'A few bright meteors may still be seen in the pre-dawn hours, but viewing conditions are not ideal,' NASA wrote, adding that skywatchers could look forward to another favorite meteor shower, the Geminids, which is set for "moon-free viewing in December." Sky condition, or the average amount of the sky covered with thick clouds, also plays a role in how well viewers can see the meteor shower. The night of Tuesday, Aug. 12, sky cover will be higher in southeastern U.S. states such as Georgia and North Carolina. Gray areas on the below map are expected to have higher sky cover in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Aug. 12, according to a National Weater Service forecast posted Aug. 8. How to see the Perseid meteor shower According to NASA, some tips for seeing meteor showers include: Watching from an area with higher altitude, putting you above hazes, fog, and smoke that make it harder to see meteors and stars. Finding a spot to watch with darker skies. Allowing your eyes to become dark adapted (which can take an hour or more) Minimizing your use of bright mobile devices and flashlights, and using only ultra-dim light sources; NASA said the best lights for stargazing are red lamps and red LEDs because red light has the smallest impact on your night vision. Perseid meteor shower has bright lights, fireballs The Perseid meteor shower peaks in mid-August each year, NASA said, giving viewers the chance to peer at bright meteors that leave long "wakes" of light and color behind them as they move through the Earth's atmosphere. Perseids are also known for fireballs, or larger explosions of light and color that can last longer than the average meteor streak and are brighter, NASA said. The meteor shower moves at the fast rate of 37 miles per second or 133,200 miles per hour, according to the American Meteor Society (AMS). Where did the Perseid meteor shower get its name? The meteors are called Perseids since they come from the part of the sky near the constellation of Perseus, named after the Greek hero, the AMS said. 'The constellation for which a meteor shower is named only serves to aid viewers in determining which shower they are viewing on a given night,' NASA said about the name. 'The constellation is not the source of the meteors.' The Perseids are particles released from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle as it returns to the inner solar system, the organizations said. Comet Swift-Tuttle takes 133 years to orbit the Sun once, and it last visited the inner solar system in 1992. Saleen Martin is a reporter on USA TODAY's NOW team. Other Nations Move Toward Making Their Own Vaccines as US Cuts Funding

At least a dozen countries are interested in developing their own vaccines because they're losing confidence that the US government will have immunizations ready for the next pandemic, a top biotech investor said. Other nations have largely depended on the US to make shots that are deployed globally. The Covid-19 vaccines, developed by Pfizer Inc. and Moderna Inc. and embraced by the US government, were used by tens of millions of people around the world.

Astria Therapeutics Reports Second Quarter 2025 Financial Results and Provides a Corporate Update

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Astria Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATXS), a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing life-changing therapies for allergic and immunologic diseases, today reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025, and provided a corporate update. 'Delivering on navenibart's best-in-class potential is our top priority, and enrollment in the global Phase 3 ALPHA-ORBIT trial is well underway with active sites across the U.S., U.K., Canada, Hong Kong, and South Africa' said Jill C. Milne, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer at Astria Therapeutics. "We are encouraged by the strong enthusiasm from patients and physicians, including at the recent HAEA conference, where we had the opportunity to engage with the HAE community. We were also thrilled to announce a strategic partnership with Kaken. Their expertise supports our ongoing Phase 3 enrollment, contributes to strengthening our financial position, and may ultimately help expand global patient access to navenibart.' Navenibart (STAR-0215) In August, Astria announced that it has exclusively licensed development and commercialization rights in Japan to Kaken Pharmaceutical for navenibart. Under the agreement, Astria will receive an upfront payment of $16 million, with the potential for an additional $16 million in total commercialization and sales milestones. In addition to these payments, Astria is also eligible for tiered royalties with the royalty rate as a percentage of net sales up to 30%, and partial Phase 3 cost reimbursement. The navenibart Phase 3 program consists of the ALPHA-ORBIT Phase 3 trial and the ORBIT-EXPANSE long-term trial, which are designed to support registration globally. ALPHA-ORBIT is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating the efficacy and safety of navenibart over a 6-month treatment period, with dosing arms every 3 months (Q3M) and every 6 months (Q6M). Enrollment is ongoing and top-line results are expected in early 2027. After completing ALPHA-ORBIT, eligible patients may continue into the open-label ORBIT-EXPANSE study, which includes 6 months of additional treatment followed by a patient-centric flexible dosing phase. Positive initial results from the ongoing ALPHA-SOLAR long-term open-label trial of navenibart were presented at the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) Annual Congress. All 16 ALPHA-STAR target enrollment participants continued into ALPHA-SOLAR and the results are highly consistent with ALPHA-STAR - showing robust overall reduction in monthly attack rates (92% mean and 97% median) and a well-tolerated safety profile. STAR-0310 Astria is developing STAR-0310, an investigational high-potency and long-acting monoclonal antibody OX40 antagonist that incorporates YTE technology, for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) and potentially other indications. STAR-0310 was intentionally designed to capitalize on the learnings of OX40 receptor and OX40 ligand programs with the goal of having the best overall OX40 therapy. The Company initiated a Phase 1a clinical trial of STAR-0310 in healthy subjects in January 2025. The Phase 1a trial is intended to assess the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and immunogenicity of STAR-0310 in healthy adult participants, with early proof-of-concept (POC) results expected in the third quarter of 2025. Data presented at the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) annual congress support STAR-0310 as a potential best-in-class OX40 antagonist, with a unique allosteric inhibition mechanism, enhanced disruption of OX40/OX40L signaling compared to other agents, and pure antagonistic activity without agonism. These findings, along with previously reported low ADCC activity and robust cytokine suppression, highlight STAR-0310's differentiated profile and its potential to achieve deeper inhibition of T cell responses. Upcoming Corporate Events Cantor Global Healthcare Conference (September 3-5, 2025, New York, New York) Second Quarter 2025 Financial Results Cash Position: As of June 30, 2025, Astria had cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of $259.2 million, compared to $328.1 million as of December 31, 2024. The Company expects that its cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments as of June 30, 2025, together with the Kaken upfront payment and expected reimbursement of a portion of the Company's Phase 3 program costs, will be sufficient to fund its current operating plan into 2028, including (i) for navenibart, support for all program activities through completion of our ALPHA-ORBIT Phase 3 trial, including activities related to the planned ORBIT-EXPANSE long-term trial and Phase 3 development and testing of drug device combinations, and (ii) for STAR-0310, the completion of the ongoing Phase 1a clinical trial of healthy subjects.
