Perseid meteor shower nears its 2025 peak, but viewing might be 'hampered'
The Perseid meteor shower is considered the best of the year due to how many meteors viewers can see, about 50 to 100 per hour, according to NASA.
Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through streams of debris left behind by comets and asteroids, according to the Natural History Museum in London. A meteor shower peak occurs when Earth passes through the thickest part of the debris stream; that's when viewers see the highest rate of meteors.
Here's more on the Perseids, how to check them out, and why this year's display could be diminished.
When is the Perseid meteor shower?
While the Perseid meteor shower is active from July 17 to Aug. 23, the peak is between Aug. 12 and 13 during pre-dawn hours, NASA said. It may be possible to see meteors from the shower as early as 10 p.m. though, according to NASA.
Why this year's Perseid shower might be 'hampered'
During this year's peak on Aug. 12, the Perseid meteor shower may be "hampered" due to an 84%-full moon, NASA said.
"Unfortunately, this year the Moon is nearly full on the peak night, and its glare will wash out all but the brightest meteors," NASA wrote.
'A few bright meteors may still be seen in the pre-dawn hours, but viewing conditions are not ideal,' NASA wrote, adding that skywatchers could look forward to another favorite meteor shower, the Geminids, which is set for "moon-free viewing in December."
Sky condition, or the average amount of the sky covered with thick clouds, also plays a role in how well viewers can see the meteor shower.
The night of Tuesday, Aug. 12, sky cover will be higher in southeastern U.S. states such as Georgia and North Carolina. Gray areas on the below map are expected to have higher sky cover in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Aug. 12, according to a National Weater Service forecast posted Aug. 8.
How to see the Perseid meteor shower
According to NASA, some tips for seeing meteor showers include:
Watching from an area with higher altitude, putting you above hazes, fog, and smoke that make it harder to see meteors and stars.
Finding a spot to watch with darker skies.
Allowing your eyes to become dark adapted (which can take an hour or more)
Minimizing your use of bright mobile devices and flashlights, and using only ultra-dim light sources; NASA said the best lights for stargazing are red lamps and red LEDs because red light has the smallest impact on your night vision.
Perseid meteor shower has bright lights, fireballs
The Perseid meteor shower peaks in mid-August each year, NASA said, giving viewers the chance to peer at bright meteors that leave long "wakes" of light and color behind them as they move through the Earth's atmosphere.
Perseids are also known for fireballs, or larger explosions of light and color that can last longer than the average meteor streak and are brighter, NASA said.
The meteor shower moves at the fast rate of 37 miles per second or 133,200 miles per hour, according to the American Meteor Society (AMS).
Where did the Perseid meteor shower get its name?
The meteors are called Perseids since they come from the part of the sky near the constellation of Perseus, named after the Greek hero, the AMS said.
'The constellation for which a meteor shower is named only serves to aid viewers in determining which shower they are viewing on a given night,' NASA said about the name. 'The constellation is not the source of the meteors.'
The Perseids are particles released from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle as it returns to the inner solar system, the organizations said. Comet Swift-Tuttle takes 133 years to orbit the Sun once, and it last visited the inner solar system in 1992.

Shooting stars visible across the UK in annual Perseid meteor shower
Stargazers across the UK caught sight of shooting stars in the early hours of Wednesday as the Perseid meteor shower hit its annual peak. Every summer, the Earth slams into a trail of debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet that also orbits the Sun. Specks as small as a grain of dust or rice flare up under the pressure of the planet's atmosphere to create shooting stars, said Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomer Dr Ed Bloomer. Around 150 meteors were predicted to cross the sky per hour but that amount will not be visible because the horizon blocks a full view, he added. However, an estimated 100 meteors could be seen per hour in certain locations that are particularly flat and dark. The meteor shower has been running for a few weeks and will continue until around August 24, the astronomer told the PA news agency. Met Office Chief Meteorologist Dan Suri said there was an increased risk of thunderstorms in parts of England on Wednesday evening. 'By the evening, there is an increased risk of thunderstorms across northern areas, with the potential for some fairly wet weather,' he said. 'Whilst the exact location for these unsettled conditions remains uncertain, it's possible a warning may be issued closer to the time.' Clearer skies are expected in the south later in the week, but the weather bureau predicted 'cloudier conditions and some patchy rain' for parts of the north. Dr Bloomer said this means that 'we have lots of chances to see this' but 'you have to let your eyes adjust to the dark'. He recommended stargazers wait half an hour to let their eyes get used to it, adding: 'Take a camping chair or something – if you had one, you would just sit down, and you would just relax, and you would just wait. 'You want to get away from city lights, you want to get away from street lamps. 'If you're looking out from your garden – it sounds obvious – but switch the kitchen light off, give yourself time to just put the phone away.' People struggling to see the meteors can turn and watch through their peripheral vision as it is 'a little bit better with low light conditions', he said. As it is summer, viewers will also have to wait until relatively late at night for it to be dark enough to see the celestial show. The astronomer added: 'For us, it's kind of one of the best (meteor showers), it's kind of reliable, it's long lived, it's quite dense… it's pretty active. 'You don't need to really be in a very specific location, the hourly rate is fairly high, so I think even beginners will be I think satisfied having seen them.' The weather is largely clear but early in the week the almost-full waning moon could make Perseid less visible. The meteor shower will be in the north-east as the sun is going down, Dr Bloomer added. He said: 'However, it's not available to everybody, because the further south you go… Perseid is lower and lower on the horizon. 'The primary interest is for Northern Hemisphere observers – Perseid is pretty low for us here in the UK, but it is above the horizon… in fact, it's above the horizon all day, but the problem is, of course, during the day, nothing's going to be visible.' Despite it being more visible in the north 'the dominant thing is going to be, can you get yourself in a dark location', he added. 'Getting into the middle of a field in the south east of England, in London, is going to be better than being in the middle of Aberdeen.' Shooting stars generally only last a second or two and sometimes appear in flurries, the astronomer said. Rarer meteors the size of a fist or a basketball will produce longer tails and are known as fireballs, he added. These can last five to 10 seconds, but Dr Bloomer said he has only ever seen one. The level up is a bolide but 'that's a sort of national emergency type thing', he added.

Davis "backyard astronomers" gather to catch a glimpse of Perseid meteor shower
The Davis Astronomy Club welcomed its members and the surrounding community to a free event Tuesday night to catch a glimpse of the Perseid meteor shower during its peak on August 12, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Yolo County Grasslands Regional Park. The annual celestial event features meteors streaking across the sky in long, colorful trails. The good news for amateur astronomers is that no special equipment is needed to enjoy the Perseids. Clear, dark skies with an unobstructed view from horizon to horizon are all you need. "The best way to see it is really find an open space, a dark space with no trees or buildings in the path. Lie down and point your toes northeast and look up," said Vinita Domier, an organizer with the Davis Astronomy Club. The club's event was attended by a few dozen people on Tuesday night. Club members also brought their own telescopes so people could get a close-up view of the moon, stars and planets. "We like to call ourselves 'backyard astronomers.' This is a hobby. We love to get people excited, especially little kids, so they look up instead of look down. There's something about actually seeing it with your eyes," Domier said. The meteor shower wasn't as visible Tuesday night because the moon is just a few days out from being full, giving off quite a bit of light.

The Perseid meteor shower is peaking Tuesday. Here's how to see it
It's finally time to watch one of the best meteor showers of the year: the brilliant display known as the Perseids. The Perseid meteor shower, which is known for producing dozens of bright meteors that leave long streaks in their wake, peaked at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday. In previous years, it produced around 40 to 50 visible meteors per hour, but sky-gazers likely won't see as many this year, said Bill Cooke, the lead for NASA's Meteoroid Environments Office. This is due to the fact that the Perseid shower is occurring shortly after August's full moon. The moon will be in a waning gibbous phase and at around 85% illumination, which means the light from the moon will make meteor-spotting more difficult. According to experts, you may see around 10 to 20 meteors per hour. When to watch for meteors While the peak of the Perseids happened well before sunset in the US, there are two windows of time between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning during which stargazers should aim to be outside for the best chance of glimpsing a meteor. 'Between dusk and moonrise on the evening of August 12, there's going to be a one-hour gap before the moon rises,' when you can look for Perseid activity, said Robert Lunsford, fireball report coordinator for the American Meteor Society. These meteors shoot out in all directions from the constellation Perseus, which is located in the northern sky. Lunsford noted, however, that, due to Perseus appearing low on the horizon at this time, much of the meteor activity will be blocked from view. 'Any meteors you do see at that time are going to be called Earth grazers because they can just graze the upper atmosphere,' he said. While most Perseid meteors are visible for mere milliseconds, the few earth grazers you might spot 'will be very long and will last two or three seconds,' he added. The last couple of hours before daybreak on Wednesday is the other window during which Lunsford recommends trying to see the shower. 'There'll be a bright moon up in the southern sky, but if you turn your gaze northward and look kind of toward the constellation Perseus, you can still see the brighter meteors.' Look up for planets The peak of the Perseids is occurring just after the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter, and the two planets will still be close together and shining brightly. The best views will be in the eastern sky before sunrise. 'These are the two brightest planets,' Lunsford said. 'This (conjunction) happens about once a year, but it's still spectacular when you get the two brightest planets really close to each other.' Saturn will also be joining the night's celestial display in the late evening hours on Tuesday. It will appear near the moon and will rise before midnight, according to EarthSky. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly into Earth's shadow as the sun, Earth and the moon line up. This causes the moon to appear darker or dimmed. When the moon sits in the darkest part of Earth's shadow, the sun's rays peek out from behind Earth and the light refracts, giving the moon a reddish hue, according to London's Natural History Museum. Some people call the result a 'blood moon.' Two weeks later, on September 21, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in parts of Australia, the Atlantic, the Pacific and Antarctica. Solar eclipses occur when the moon moves between the sun and Earth. In the case of a partial solar eclipse, the moon does not fully block out the sun.
