FAA employees are commonly tasked with ensuring air safety, and given a string of recent incidents that were all over the news, it seems like the Trump administration's staff cuts come at a time when flyers are on edge.
Confidence in air travel has dipped this year, according to a recent survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. It found the American public is most confident in the ability of pilots to maintain air safety and they have the least amount of confidence in federal government agencies.
More than 130 of the recent batch of FAA job cuts were positions that directly or indirectly supported air traffic control, facilities, and technology used to keep planes and passengers safe, according to the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists.
Now it's worth noting that as per Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, fewer than 400 people were let go at the FAA — an agency that employs 45,000 people. Duffy also noted that all terminated employees were probationary — meaning, they were hired less than a year prior to their dismissal — and no one with a 'critical safety' position was fired.
But one recently terminated FAA employee told Politico they were a member of a team of 12 whose job is to create air maps — the preplanned routes that pilots and controllers use to guide airplanes. "Air traffic controllers cannot do their work without us," said the aeronautical information specialist. "Without our team ... pilots would quite literally be flying blind." It's not clear how many members of the team were laid off. They said workers were 'targeted just as a senseless line item on an Excel sheet.'
"I do think the American public does need to be concerned, about not only my firing but also the firing of so many public safety [and] national security professionals at the FAA," said Charles Spitzer-Stadtlander, another fired FAA employee who was a part of an initiative established to detect incoming missiles, to People.
The dismissal of hundreds of FAA employees could lead to an uptick in flight delays and cancellations. And the fear is that it could increase the risk of accidents. So it's important to know your rights as a passenger in these situations.
The Department of Transportation says, "Airlines are required to adhere to the promises that they make in their customer service plan, including commitments to care for customers in the event of controllable delays or cancellations."

It also says that if an airline cancels your flight or makes a significant change to its departure time, you're entitled to a refund should you choose not to get rebooked. This holds true even if you purchased a non-refundable ticket. But from there, the compensation you're entitled to depends on the airline you've booked with and the situation at hand.
Delta, for example, will give you a free hotel room if you're affected by an overnight cancellation. And you're entitled to a meal voucher for a delay of three hours or more. Your best bet is to consult this dashboard from the Department of Transportation, which covers the policies of 10 major U.S. airlines, to see what rights you have in the event of a cancellation or delay.
That said, as a passenger, you can always ask an airline to go above and beyond its typical policy. For example, if a flight delay causes you to miss an event that you paid for, you may be able to convince the airline to reimburse you for your tickets.
You should also know that you may be able to sue an airline if you sustain an injury during a flight due to their negligence. But for that, you'll generally need to consult an attorney. And compensation is awarded on a case-by-case basis.
Earlier in February, a Delta flight turned upside following a turbulent landing in Toronto. Two passengers have since sued the airline for negligence and are seeking compensation for their injuries — both physical and emotional.
Delta has already offered $30,000 in compensation to passengers on that flight, saying the money "has no strings attached and does not affect rights." Whether some individual passengers get more will depend on how their lawsuits shake out.

Elizabeth Warren says she wants to know how the quasi-governmental Department of Government Efficiency gained access to 'sensitive' student loan information at the U.S. Department of Education. On Monday, Warren and U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, both Democrats, called for the agency's acting inspector general to find out how that breach happened. They were joined by Democratic senators from eight states, including U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut. Warren said lawmakers learned of the potential breach of systems at Federal Student Aid after DOGE, which was helmed until recently by tech titan Elon Musk, infiltrated the agency. In response, Education Department officials revealed that DOGE workers 'supported' a review of the FSA's contracts. As a part of that review, one employee was granted 'read-only' access to two internal systems that held sensitive personal information about borrowers. The agency said it had since revoked that access. But, according to Warren, it did not explain why that access had been revoked, or whether the employee had continued access to other databases. 'Because of the [Education] department's refusal to provide full and complete information, the full extent of DOGE's role and influence at ED remains unknown,' the lawmakers wrote in a June 8 letter to René L. Rocque, the agency's acting inspector general. That 'lack of clarity is not only frustrating for borrowers but also dangerous for the future of an agency that handles an extensive student loan portfolio and a range of federal aid programs for higher education,' the lawmakers continued. Warren, Markey and their colleagues have called on Roque's office to determine whether the department adhered to the Federal Privacy Act, which dictates how the government can collect and use personal information. They also asked Roque to 'determine the impact of DOGE's new plans to consolidate Americans' personal information across government databases.' Trump cancels $87 million grant for planned low-carbon cement plant in Holyoke

HOLYOKE — President Donald Trump's administration recently canceled an $87 million grant issued to Sublime Systems, whose low-carbon cement manufacturing plant is scheduled to open in Holyoke in 2027. Sublime has technology developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to make cement using electricity, a process designed to cut down the amount of carbon released by a traditionally emission-heavy process. It planned to employ 70 to 90 people with production expected to begin in 2027 or 2028. It already secured and cleared a 16-acre site in Holyoke's industrial flats area. Sublime chose the area, in part, because of Holyoke's hydropower, which is a successor to the 19th century turbines that made Holyoke famous as the 'Paper City.' Sublime is still seeking financing despite the loss of federal money. 'All our meetings with the Sublime team indicate this project is moving forward,' said Aaron Vega, head of planning and economic development for Holyoke. 'We do not yet have site plans submitted for review, but the city has had pre-application meetings with their design team and are working through the issues and opportunities at their location.' U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, D-Springfield, said the Trump administration terminated $3.7 billion in grants issued by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Clean Energy. That includes the Holyoke grant. 'The Trump Administration's decision to kill critical clean energy projects is deeply irresponsible and is a betrayal of American innovation, workers, and the fight against climate change,' Neal said in a statement Monday. 'Scrapping funding for projects for innovators like Sublime Systems in Holyoke undercuts years of progress in decarbonizing heavy industry, and it jeopardizes good-paying jobs and economic development in communities that need it most.' The funding came through the Inflation Reduction Act, which was written in the House Ways and Means Committee that Neal chaired at the time. 'I can say unequivocally that this was not the intention of the bill; it was designed to accelerate the clean energy transition through innovation, not stall it,' Neal said. 'This isn't just about climate — it's about global competitiveness and leadership. Calling the move to shortsighted, Neal's statement called on the Trump administration to reinstate the grant. Sublime already had a deal to sell 623,000 tons of cement products to Microsoft over six to nine years. Previously, Neal said he expected the climate provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act to survive because many of the projects are in Republican-leaning southern states where GOP congress members would fight for them. In January, Joe Hicken, Sublime's vice president of business development and policy, said he would be surprised if the incoming adminstration canceled the 'investments in clean American manufacturing,' because the United States imports millions of tons of cement. Top trade officials from the U.S. and China were meeting in London on Monday, the second such meeting in the past month and one aiming to quell rising tensions between the two superpowers over tariffs and other trade policies. The meeting kicked off just days after President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in an extended phone conversation, after which Trump offered an upbeat download on the conversation. 'I just concluded a very good phone call with President Xi, of China, discussing some of the intricacies of our recently made, and agreed to, Trade Deal,' Trump said on Truth Social last Friday. 'The call lasted approximately one and a half hours, and resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries. There should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of Rare Earth products. Our respective teams will be meeting shortly at a location to be determined.' U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer are leading the U.S. delegation and early reports on the talks were optimistic. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett on Monday told CNBC's 'Squawk Box' that the U.S. was seeking confirmation China would restore the flows of critical minerals. 'The purpose of the meeting today is to make sure that they're serious, but to literally get handshakes ... and get this thing behind us,' Hassett said. He added that he expected it 'to be a short meeting with a big, strong handshake.' While White House officials were signaling expectations for a positive outcome from the latest round of talks, some trade experts predicted the road to a new U.S.-China agreement could be a long one. Zhiwei Zhang, president and chief economist of Pinpoint Asset Management, told CNBC that it could take months for trade tensions to be resolved. 'I don't really have very high expectations for these trade talks ... I doubt they will reach an agreement very soon,' he told CNBC on Monday. 'There could be some resolution on specific issues, like a rare earths, for instance, China already announced that they will give some permits to foreign firms applying for imports. Now, those kind of a temporary solution, we might see some of that come out. But I doubt we will have a complete solution coming from this dialogue in the U.K.,' Zhang added. In spite of a temporary U.S.-China trade agreement coming out of talks held on May 12 in Geneva, Switzerland, tensions arose earlier this month after Trump accused China of breaching terms of the deal. 'The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US. So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!' Trump wrote on Truth Social. Last week, ahead of the call between Trump and Xi, China hit back on Trump's claims the Asian country was in breach of a new trade agreement, countering that the U.S. itself was undermining the deal with new sanctions. A statement from China's Ministry of Commerce released last Monday said Trump administration actions 'seriously undermine the existing consensus reached at the Geneva economic and trade talks, and seriously damage China's legitimate rights and interests.' Chinese officials also pointed to recent signaling from the U.S. about potential new regulations for advanced microchips and the revocation of U.S. visas for Chinese students, per CBS News, as evidence that the U.S. was acting in bad faith following the trade deal. Trump's complaint stemmed from his concerns over China's export rules on rare earth minerals. China controls 90% of the world's rare earth elements production capacity and, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, the minerals play a critical role in U.S. national security, energy independence and economic growth. Many advanced technologies have components made from rare earth materials such as magnets, batteries, phosphors and catalysts.
