Top shuttlers join Road to Gold push for 2028 Olympic glory

PETALING JAYA: World No. 1 men's doubles shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani ( pic ) have pledged their commitment to the Road to Gold (RTG) programme for the 2025 cycle, alongside mixed doubles duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh shared the news, adding that the shuttlers will be receiving extensive support for the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
'These four shuttlers will now receive extensive performance-related support as they aim to not only qualify for the 2028 Olympics, but also create history for Malaysia in Los Angeles.
'RTG has always supported athletes who fulfil the programme's criteria and we hope this additional support will spur them in their pursuit of excellence this year,' she said in a statement on Thursday (June 19).
The two pairs will be joining other fellow shuttlers in the programme, including world No. 2 men's doubles duo Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, and mixed doubles duo Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei.
The other five athletes in the RTG programme are weightlifter Mohd Aniq Kasdan, track cyclist Mohd Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Nurul Izzah Izzati Asri, and squash player S. Sivasangari.

Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh said that through RTG, they would receive extensive performance-related support as they aimed to not only qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28), but also to create history for Malaysia in the US. 'RTG has always supported athletes who fulfil the criteria of the programme, and we hope this additional support will spur them in their pursuit of excellence this year,' she said on Facebook today. Last week, Yeoh announced that eight badminton players – world No 2 men's doubles duo Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and their teammates Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, top national women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, as well as national mixed doubles duo Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei – had agreed to join the programme. Other athletes joining the programme are weightlifter Mohd Aniq Kasdan and track cyclists Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri and Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, as well as squash player S Sivasangari. Yeoh also announced that national women's recurve archery trio Ariana Nur Dania Mohamad Zairi, Syaqiera Mashayikh and Nurul Azreena Fazil, as well as squash player Ng Eain Yow, had agreed to join the Fast Track RTG programme. The RTG project, introduced by the youth and sports ministry in April 2023, is a national initiative aimed at coordinating Malaysia's efforts to win its first gold medal at the Olympic Games, with a focus on the Paris 2024 and LA28 editions.

KUALA LUMPUR: Their fellow independent Lee Zii Jia said no earlier, but badminton pairs Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai said yes yesterday. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has confirmed that men's doubles world No. 1 Sze Fei-Izzuddin and mixed doubles world No. 6 Soon Huat-Shevon were the latest to join the Road to Gold (RTG) programme. The four shuttlers and their coach Teo Kok Siang met RTG coordinator Datuk Stuart Ramalingam at the National Sports Institute yesterday before signing their commitments. This makes badminton the sport with the largest number of players listed under the elite Olympic programme with 12. "Four professional badminton athletes Sze Fei, Izzuddin, Soon Huat and Shevon had pledged their commitment to the RTG programme on June 18," posted Yeoh on her Facebook today. "Through the RTG, these four will now receive extensive performance-related support as they aim to not only qualify for the 2028 Olympics, but also create history for Malaysia in Los Angeles. "RTG has always supported athletes who fulfil the criteria of the programme and we hope this additional support will spur them in their pursuit of excellence this year." Besides Sze Fei-Izzuddin and Soon Huat-Shevon, eight other shuttlers pledged their commitments last week. They are men's doubles world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, women's doubles world No. 3 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and mixed doubles world No. 4 Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei. World No. 28 Zii Jia had turned down the Youth and Sports Ministry's offer to join the RTG programme with his management team saying the support should be given to his peers who are more deserving in the present time.
