Gavin & Stacey's Rob Brydon lands new role – with striking Uncle Bryn likeness
Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon has landed an exciting new role as he plays an oddball, while Michael Palin is back doing comedy as BBC line up host of new funny shows
Gavin & Stacey star Rob Brydon has landed a new comedy series as part of a host of new BBC sitcom announcements.
Rob plays middle-aged divorcee Bill Beam who staves off financial ruin by renting his spare rooms to students. The character sounds a bit like Uncle Bryn from Gavin & Stacey.
Warm-hearted and eager but neurotic and slightly overbearing, Bill is thrilled by the youthful energy his lodgers bring – but baffled by their indifference to his laminated house rules and colour-coded cutlery. He's torn between wanting to be part of the gang – sharing banter, keeping up with trends – and clinging to his role as responsible adult.
The show, called Bill's Included, is written by Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen. Rob Brydon says: 'I can't wait to get started with this, to speak the wonderful words written by Alex and Ben who've done such a great job on the script.'
Brydon's comedy was one of a host announced by the BBC yesterday at their own comedy festival in Belfast which include new projects for Diane Morgan and Lenny Rush. The Office star Mackenzie Crook has also written a new project which will see a return to comedy for Monty Python star Michael Palin.
The line up includes:
Diane Morgan sitcom Ann Droid about a social humanoid robot designed to keep elderly people company, exploring the hilarious intersection of technology and human connection
Supernatural family sitcom Reluctant Vampire starring BAFTA winner Lenny Rush
Small Prophets , created by BAFTA winner Mackenzie Crook, starring Pearce Quigley, BAFTA winner Sir Michael Palin and BAFTA winner Sophie Willan
Stuffed , starring Guz Khan as an office worker who gets an unexpected Christmas bonus and takes his family to Lapland, only to find that he has to pay the money back
The return of series Only Child, Funboys, The Young Offenders and Golden Cobra
BBC Director of comedy Jon Petrie said: 'The BBC continues to be the biggest single investor in original comedy content in the UK. And for the second year running eight out of the top 10 scripted comedies were on the BBC. Created, written by and starring some of the UK's most brilliant homegrown talent, I'm really proud of the shows we have announced today and can't wait for BBC viewers to see them.'
He added: 'Great comedy always comes back to the fundamentals: brilliant characters, sharp jokes, a unique voice. Those are the elements that endure – not massive sets or casts of thousands.
'Our priority is to keep our shows affordable and distinctive, because comedy doesn't need explosions and continuous shots, it needs punchlines, authentic voices, and that gleeful point of view that no algorithm can touch.'
Six part series Small Prophets is a comic tale of eccentric Michael Sleep (Pearce Quigley) who, since his darling Clea disappeared seven years ago, has lived a very ordinary life. He eats Shreddies, works in a DIY store, visits dad Brian (Sir Michael Palin) and hopes for Clea to return.
Filmed and set in and around Manchester the series incorporates visually stunning animation elements throughout as we tell a story of friendships and hope, the magical and the mundane, and where secrets and lies lurk in a suburban cul-de-sac.
Mackenzie Crook said: 'Like all my best ideas, this one has been percolating for nearly a decade and is finally ready to see the light of day. It's wonderful to be working again with my friends Gill Isles and Pearce Quigley and to realise a long-term ambition of collaborating with animators Ainslie Henderson and Will Anderson.'

Peckham or Sarajevo? Bosnian brothers spark joy with replica van from iconic British sitcom
There is an unmistakable air of Peckham these days in Bosnia's capital, Sarajevo, as the legendary yellow three-wheeled van from the BBC's long-running sitcom 'Only Fools and Horses' cruises the city streets. The little Reliant Regal was the trademark of the stars of the series — the irresistible Trotter brothers from Peckham, a working-class neighborhood in London. In Bosnia, a replica belongs to the Fatic brothers, local businessmen who are crazy about the show. The Fatics are dealers in home appliances, running a successful company with dozens of employees and a huge shop on the outskirts of Sarajevo. Building the business, however, has resembled the ups and downs of the Peckham market traders Del Boy and Rodney Trotter, they say. 'We are definitely the local version of the series,' Tarik Fatic, the younger of the brothers, said. 'We were always dealing in something, we would buy whatever we can and then sell it." The enormously popular sitcom, which began in 1981, follows the lives of the Trotter brothers and their far-from-straightforward path from rags to riches. Over the course of seven series and several Christmas specials, the Trotters tried various get-rich-quick schemes, buying low-quality or sometimes black-market goods and selling them at the market. Just like the Trotter brothers, 'we always tried to make profit and regardless of how many times we failed, we just moved on," Tarik Fatic said. Also from a working-class family, and growing up in a country that was devastated in the bloody 1992-95 ethnic conflict, the brothers tried trading in food, poultry and clothes before settling on home appliances. They are aware there are no guarantees their current success will last. 'The market (in Bosnia) is still disorganized and unstable,' Tarik Fatic, 33, said. 'Not a day passes without the two (Del Boy and Rodney) crossing my mind.' Known here as Mucke, which actually means something like wheeling and dealing, 'Only Fools and Horses' became hugely popular throughout what was still Yugoslavia from the 1980s onwards. Murals with images of main characters have been painted on the walls; many cafes were named after the series, while visiting actors were greeted with frenzy. The Reliant Regal was made by a British company, famous for its eccentric vehicles, that went out of business in 2002. In Sarajevo, people wave, take pictures with their phones, honk their horns when they see the yellow van in the streets. The Fatic brothers imported it from Manchester six months ago after a long search. It took a while to register the unusual vehicle, said Mirnes Fatic, 38. 'It is a very nice feeling. It's a joy every time I go for a ride in the city,' he said, admitting that it also was "a great advertising move." It's not just the van. The Fatic brothers have also named their company after the series — Only Fools and Horses Brothers Mucke. There have been some doubts how clients and banks would react but it turned out really well, Mirnes added. 'We hope and believe that this time next year, we will be millionaires," he smiled, using the famous phrase from the show.

EastEnders confirms end of an era as huge change is confirmed
It's the end of an era in EastEnders next week, and a change in the BBC soap's credits will reflect the change. I am, of course, referring to the departure of much-celebrated Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw. The 38 year old TV boss announced he was stepping down from the show last year, having sailed the broadcaster's flagship programme out of murky waters and into an era of unmissable viewing. Fans were naturally devastated, given he was instrumental in some of the greatest plots we've seen in years – from The Six's involvement in Keanu Taylor's (Danny Walters) murder, to Phil Mitchell's (Steve McFadden) recent mental health crisis. There was also Cindy Beale's (Michelle Collins) return from the 'dead' after 25 years, two Mitchell flashback episodes and the recent 40th anniversary live episode. He created the Knights; the first Black and dual heritage family to run a pub on any UK soap, headed up by Colin Salmon, and has brought back fan favourites including Adam Woodyatt, Thomas Law, Jacqueline Jossa, Anita Dobson, Angela Wynter and Patsy Palmer. And what a way to end his tenure – last night's British Soap Awards saw EastEnders pick up 8 gongs, including Best British Soap, outperforming their rivals. Ben Wadey, former Commissioning Editor at Channel 4, will be taking over the role. He's no stranger to Albert Square, having worked on the 35th anniversary and also in the studio next door – as Story Producer for the final series of Holby City. Chris' final episode will air on Friday, June 13, with Ben's first episode airing the following Monday, June 16. Speaking about his new role as Executive Producer, Ben Wadey said: 'I'm thrilled to be returning to EastEnders at such an exciting time for the show. 'Having grown up watching and loving EastEnders, it sparked my passion for television, and I feel I've known the residents of Walford my entire life – so to lead this iconic BBC soap into its next chapter is a true privilege. Pembrokeshire people at BBC Make a Difference Awards
The BBC Cymru Wales Make a Difference Awards 2025 has recognised individuals and groups across the country for their outstanding contributions to their communities. The 32 finalists were selected from more than 700 nominees. Among those representing Pembrokeshire are a retired racehorse and a dedicated environmentalist. Ozzy, under the name Up For An Oscar, a retired racehorse from Pembrokeshire, has been nominated for the Animal Award. Once deemed unmanageable, Ozzy now serves as a therapy horse at Redberth Croft CIC, offering vital support to vulnerable individuals. Sharron Taylor is another Pembrokeshire representative shortlisted for her efforts in the Green Award category. The founder of Tipi Fields, Ms Taylor has made a significant impact on her local environment and community by cleaning coastlines of debris and marine waste. Her work doesn't stop at tidying up the coast; Ms Taylor also transforms the waste into unique, handcrafted items, breathing new life into discarded materials. BBC Radio Wales' Lucy Owen praised the nominees, saying: "We're absolutely blown away by the nominations we've had. "There are so many wonderful stories about community groups making a huge difference in their local areas and outstanding individuals committed to bringing people together, fundraising for good causes and caring for others." BBC Radio Cymru's Shân Cothi added: "Over 700 nominations for our very first Make a Difference Awards in Wales says so much about who we are as a nation. "It's incredible to hear about some of the amazing things that people are doing right across Wales. "A huge congratulations to everyone who was nominated and to all of our brilliant finalists." The winners will be chosen by a panel of judges from the BBC, including well-known presenters like Katie Owen, Lauren Price, and Gethin Jones. The successful community heroes will be announced at the awards ceremony on September 20 in Cardiff. The BBC Cymru Wales Make a Difference Awards 2025 aim to celebrate and acknowledge the people who go above and beyond in their communities, shining a light on these often-unsung heroes. This is the first year the awards have been held in Wales. A full list of the categories and finalists is available on the BBC's Make a Difference Awards website. The event, led by BBC Cymru Wales, is set to become an annual celebration of community spirit and selfless dedication.
