‘No doubt': Canfield eyes back-to-back state titles
CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – The Canfield softball team is coming off a state title win in 2024 and expects nothing else but the same for this season.
'There's a lot of momentum riding from last year, that's for sure, these kids only have one perspective after the last two seasons, and it's when it's playing at a high level,' said Cardinals head coach Michael Kernan. 'That's carried over for this year.'
The Cardinals have made it to the state finals the past two seasons. Canfield won the Division II State Title in 2024 and was one game shy of that title in 2023.
'Our past couple of years, we've had younger girls have to step up. So we've had a really good connection with them built already,' said senior Alexis Johnson. 'The team connection is just really great. We work well together and communicate.'
This year's team has five seniors and a majority of juniors.
'I think we all have a really big role, but especially the juniors because there's a lot of us,' said junior Caylee Ortiz.
Canfield will be without star ace Malena Toth who is now pitching for the University at Buffalo. Cardinal's standouts said their championship experience will pay dividends.
'Just with our team chemistry and especially coming off of last year, we just want to double it and continue on with how we've been doing,' said junior Sami Economous.
The Cardinals have already won their home opener against Minerva 4-3.
'We're only going in the season with one manner and that's to win at a high level, high caliber,' said Kernan.
Canfield (1-0) plays next against Field on Tuesday, March 25.

Seattle Seahawks news: Contract extension, injuries and more for Cardinals fans to know Checking in on the NFC West with a few stories from the last week for Cardinals fans to know about the Seahawks. We have made it through another week of the offseason, now 12 weeks from Week 1. It is time to check in with the rest of the NFC West and see what is happening with the Arizona Cardinals' division rivals — the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. What has been going on with the Seahawks? Below are some stories from the last week about them that Cardinals fans should know. Early favorite for punt return job The Seahawks added former Ravens receiver and returner Steven Sims in the offseason. Sims has been getting the bulk of the punt return reps in OTAs. Highest-paid punter The Seahawks signed Michael Dickson to a contract extension. It is worth $16.2 million over four years, which makes him the highest-paid punter in the NFL. Uchenna Nwosu rehabbing The Seahawks had 100% attendance at mandatory minicamp this past week. However, linebacker Uchenna Nwosu was not practicing. He had offseason knee surgery but head coach Miek Macdonald downplayed it, calling it small.. Ankle injury for Ken Walker RB Kenneth Walker III missed some time in offseason work. After missing six games last season, he is dealing with what is considered a minor ankle injury. Minicamp rookie standouts As the offseason program concluded, there were three rookies who stood out — guard Grey Zabel, safety Nick Emmanwori and receiver Tory Horton. Zabel projects as a starter. Emmanwori will compete for a role on defense. The same goes for Horton. 49ers news: Minicamp questions, injuries, no retirement talk and more for Cardinals fans
49ers news: Minicamp questions, injuries, no retirement talk and more for Cardinals fans Checking in on the NFC West with a few stories from the last week for Cardinals fans to know about the division rival 49ers. We have made it through another week of the offseason, now 12 weeks from Week 1. It is time to check in with the rest of the NFC West and see what is happening with the Arizona Cardinals' division rivals — the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. What has been going on with the 49ers? Below are some stories from the last week about them that Cardinals fans should know. Minicamp questions The 49ers had a two-day mandatory minicamp this past week to wrap up their offseason program. These were the questions about the team entering the week. 15 players absent from minicamp A bit of a clickbait header, yes. The 49ers had 100% attendance but 15 players were not on the field. It was for injury management. WR Brandon Aiyuk injury update The injury update wasn't much of an update. Head coach Kyler Shanahan didn't have much to say other than that he is doing some work and is making progress, but he still does not have a specific timetable for his full return. No retirement talk yet 49ers left tackle Trent Williams will turn 37 years old next month. He is entering his 16th NFL season. But he isn't thinking about retirement yet. Mac Jones talks about improving Jones is the 49ers' new backup quarterback in 2025. He spoke about what he needs to get better at, and noted he needs to commit to throws better when he knows that is the right one to make.
