49ers news: Minicamp questions, injuries, no retirement talk and more for Cardinals fans Checking in on the NFC West with a few stories from the last week for Cardinals fans to know about the division rival 49ers.
We have made it through another week of the offseason, now 12 weeks from Week 1. It is time to check in with the rest of the NFC West and see what is happening with the Arizona Cardinals' division rivals — the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.
What has been going on with the 49ers?
Below are some stories from the last week about them that Cardinals fans should know.
Minicamp questions
The 49ers had a two-day mandatory minicamp this past week to wrap up their offseason program. These were the questions about the team entering the week.
15 players absent from minicamp
A bit of a clickbait header, yes. The 49ers had 100% attendance but 15 players were not on the field. It was for injury management.
WR Brandon Aiyuk injury update
The injury update wasn't much of an update. Head coach Kyler Shanahan didn't have much to say other than that he is doing some work and is making progress, but he still does not have a specific timetable for his full return.
No retirement talk yet
49ers left tackle Trent Williams will turn 37 years old next month. He is entering his 16th NFL season. But he isn't thinking about retirement yet.
Mac Jones talks about improving
Jones is the 49ers' new backup quarterback in 2025. He spoke about what he needs to get better at, and noted he needs to commit to throws better when he knows that is the right one to make.

Dodgers Issued Caution on Top Target at MLB Trade Deadline

Dodgers Issued Caution on Top Target at MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers will be buyers at the trade deadline. There's no question about that, as Andrew Friedman has continued to prove throughout his time in Los Angeles that he'll do anything he can to win a World Series. Advertisement After the moves and Dodgers made at the deadline a year ago, he also understands how to evaluate under-the-radar talent, something that every team in Major League Baseball would love to have out of an executive. One name that has continued to pop up for the Dodgers is Erick Fedde of the St. Louis Cardinals. The right-hander has shown to have above-average stuff throughout his career and has been great this year, posting a 3.65 ERA. Andrew Friedman, President of baseball operations, speaks during an introductory press conference for Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Roki Sasaki (11) at Dodger Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Despite that, Cody Williams recently urged the Dodgers to be cautious about his stuff, adding that they need to be careful in any trade for the Cardinals veteran because he isn't as good as his numbers show. Advertisement "Fedde has continued to be solid with his overall numbers, posting a 3.54 ERA (second best in the Cardinals rotation) with a 1.30 WHIP. What jumps off the page with Baseball Savant, however, is that he's sitting with an expected ERA at 5.28 this season, 1.74 points higher than the actual mark. "With the contact he's giving up and the situations he's found himself in, he's simply not been as good as his current ERA would suggest. His stuff likely isn't going to tick up meaningfully to change that, which means any team pursuing him should expect him to not be as strongly impactful as he has been. Buyers that should beware: Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Dodgers," he wrote. Depending on the role the Dodgers would plan to use him in, and the package they'd have to give up, it could make sense to trade for him. However, to say that Fedde has been an ace throughout his career would be unfair; in that regard, the Dodgers do need to be cautious. It's 2-1 Arizona heading into the third inning. Aided by a 4-6-3 double play, Ethan Eberle bounces back with a scoreless second inning to keep Louisville within two runs. Star tight end George Kittle, who spent six seasons with Deebo Samuel on the San Francisco 49ers, came to his former teammate's defense after fans called out his weight in a viral video from minicamp. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers traded star receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. to the Washington Commanders earlier this offseason. Advertisement After Samuel had requested a trade, reports rose that the 49ers could be inclined to move him due to an alarming allegation that he had spent the 2024 season 20 pounds overweight. For Washington, those rumors didn't seem to be an issue when it gave up draft capital to pair Deebo with All-Pro receiver Terry McLaurin and exciting young quarterback Jayden Daniels. Samuel got his first reps with the Commanders this week at mandatory minicamp and speculation about his weight returned after a route-running video went viral. Fans claimed Deebo looked heavier than normal and a touch slower as a result. With nothing better for fans to do, it's not uncommon for social media to turn into a feeding ground for speculating and overanalyzing every glimpse from inside NFL minicamps. That could be the case here, but Deebo's history of weight concerns don't help his cause in avoiding criticism. Advertisement 49ers star tight end George Kittle, who spent six seasons with him in San Francisco, came to his former teammate's defense in the comment section of an aggregator account that was trying to put Samuel on blast. "It's called a group install when players jog thru plays. Knock it off," Kittle said. Fans could be reaching for the tinfoil hats a bit too prematurely here, and Kittle is doing his best to remind the haters and theorists that there is nothing to gossip about regarding Samuel's speed. Physically, Deebo has never been the skinniest guy to begin with. His pads may make his torso look thinner during the season, so seeing him in just a jersey for the first time this year could have caught fans off guard. Advertisement Those initial rumors from March from Matt Barrows of The Athletic hint at the 49ers having faced these thoughts for years. "... But that's a concern. I think the 49ers had that concern the minute he showed up in Santa Clara in 2019 and it never fully went away.' The concern may have been there, but when Samuel shined in 2021 with 18.2 yards per reception and over 1,700 all-purpose yards, nobody seemed to bring up his weight. Part of the reason Samuel excels in rushing is his combination and strength and speed, so it's worth remembering that this body type isn't completely out of the ordinary. Since that All-Pro season with the 49ers, Samuel has seen a decline numbers wise. However, he is still widely considered an elite player because of his unique dual-threat capabilities at the position. Advertisement He'll put that reputation to the test in his first season with the Commanders in 2025. From here on out, we can expect to see regular Deebo updates from training camp to either contradict or defend this criticism.
