Mets visit Nationals, seek to extend modest win streak

Reuters2 hours ago
August 20 - The New York Mets have reignited their offense, and in doing so they have three consecutive wins.
The Mets will look to continue to flex their muscles on Wednesday night when they vie to win their three-game series against the host Washington Nationals.
Every game is key for the Mets, who have only a one-game lead as they hold the final wild-card spot in the National League.
Mark Vientos hit a three-run homer in New York's 7-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday in the Little League Classic. He added a two-run shot on Tuesday to highlight a five-run third inning in the Mets' 8-1 series-opening romp over the Nationals.
Vientos is batting just .232 with nine homers and 38 RBIs in 85 games this season. Those numbers, however, are far off of last year's totals of a .266 average, 27 homers and 71 RBIs.
"He was an important player for us last year (and is) not having the season he anticipated or we anticipated, but we need him now and he's going to continue to get opportunities and he's a big part of this team," New York manager Carlos Mendoza said of Vientos, per Newsday.
"It's been hard, especially when we go four, five days and he's not in the lineup. He's not going to be happy. He wants to be out there but, as much as you try to communicate with them, they want to play. But this is where we're at, and I feel like he's responding well."
Vientos wasn't alone in responding on Tuesday. Brett Baty went deep to lead off the sixth inning, Juan Soto followed suit in the seventh, and Jeff McNeil added a solo shot in the ninth.
McNeil also had a two-run double in the third as part of his second three-hit performance of the season. He is 8-for-17 with six runs during his four-game hitting streak.
"I feel really good. I feel like I've been seeing the ball really well the last few games," McNeil told SNY. "I've got some good pitches to hit and (hit) some of them."
New York's Kodai Senga (7-4, 2.35 ERA) will square off against Washington rookie Brad Lord (3-6, 3.26) on Wednesday in a battle of right-handers.
Senga is seeking to snap a six-start winless drought since returning from the injured list following a strained right hamstring. He received his fifth no-decision in that span despite allowing two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves in his team's 4-3 loss on Thursday.
Senga's last win came on June 12 in a 4-3 victory against Washington. The 32-year-old Japan native yielded one hit over 5 2/3 scoreless innings in that game and boasts a 1-1 record with a 1.99 ERA in four career appearances (all starts) vs. the Nationals.
Lord, 25, is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in two appearances (one start) against the Mets this season. Washington's Dylan Crews ripped a triple and scored his team's lone run on Tuesday. He has scored one run in three straight games.
Andres Chaparro had two of Washington's five hits in the series opener. Unfortunately for the Nationals, they couldn't solve Mets starter David Peterson for the second time in as many meetings this season.
"It seems like he's definitely got something figured out against us," Washington's Paul DeJong said, per MASN. "We'll have to let this one marinate, and when we see him again, hopefully in New York (in September), we'll have a better approach."

Zoe Harrison wins fly-half battle for England World Cup opener

Zoe Harrison has won the fly-half battle for England 's Women's Rugby World Cup opener against the USA in Sunderland on Friday evening. Head coach John Mitchell has opted for the same starting XV that so impressively beat France 40-6 in their final warm-up match ahead of the World Cup, meaning Harrison will be pulling the strings from No 10. The identity of the starting Red Roses fly half in the biggest matches has been up for debate but Harrison – with her tactically astute play and impeccable kicking from hand – has been preferred to Holly Aitchison and Helena Rowland in the role. Given England's status as heavy favourites to win the title and the undisputed No 1 team in the world, Mitchell will have plenty of opportunity to rotate his side – especially in the group stage – but Harrison's selection for the opener at the Stadium of Light, where a record crowd for a Women's Rugby World Cup opening match is expected with over 40,000 tickets sold, appears to give her a leg up over her positional rivals. The 27-year-old renews her half-back partnership with Mo Hunt, while the blossoming centre pairing of Tatyana Heard and Meg Jones are given another run-out and an explosive back three of Jess Breach, Abby Dow and women's World Rugby player of the year Ellie Kildunne will look to do damage against a US backline that is likely to be overmatched. The Red Roses are on a remarkable 27-game winning run, with their last defeat coming against New Zealand in the 2022 World Cup final, and the expectation is that they will lift the World Cup for just the third time next month. In the convincing warm-up win over Six Nations rivals France, it was the England pack that most impressed as their fearsome driving maul splintered the French forwards, and that starting front eight will get an opportunity to immediately show their class on the World Cup stage. Captain Zoe Aldcroft leads from blindside flanker, in an exciting back row containing Alex Matthews at No 8 and openside Sadia Kabeya, which means that ex-skipper Marlie Packer – who is available again after serving a one-match ban for her sending off in the 97-7 obliteration of Spain –misses out and isn't even given a place on the bench, highlighting just how far she has dropped in the pecking order since her days as the Red Roses talisman. Abbie Ward starts alongside Morwenna Talling in the second row, with Hannah Botterman, Amy Cokayne and Maud Muir combining in the front row. Among the replacements, Emily Scarratt is set to appear in her fifth Rugby World Cup, having debuted the last time England hosted the tournament in 2010, while, at the other end of the spectrum, Kelsey Clifford, Maddie Feaunati and Emma Sing could all make World Cup debuts from the bench. 'We have been building nicely into the tournament and now we're excited to get our campaign underway,' Mitchell said. 'Sunderland have been a great host city thus far and we know it'll be a record crowd for a Women's Rugby World Cup opening match which shows the appetite for rugby in this region and for the competition ahead. 'We want to embrace the occasion whilst understanding we have to remain where our feet are and earn the right to progress through the pool stage.' Red Roses team to play USA in World Cup opener 15 Ellie Kildunne (Harlequins, 53 caps) 14 Abby Dow (Unattached, 54 caps) 13 Megan Jones (Trailfinders Women, 27 caps) 12 Tatyana Heard (Gloucester-Hartpury, 31 caps) 11 Jess Breach (Saracens, 47 caps) 10 Zoe Harrison (Saracens, 59 caps) 9 Natasha Hunt (Gloucester-Hartpury, 82 caps) 1 Hannah Botterman (Bristol Bears, 58 caps) 2 Amy Cokayne (Sale Sharks, 84 caps) 3 Maud Muir (Gloucester-Hartpury, 42 caps) 4 Morwenna Talling (Sale Sharks, 23 caps) 5 Abbie Ward (Bristol Bears, 76 caps) 6 Zoe Aldcroft (Gloucester-Hartpury, 65 caps) - captain 7 Sadia Kabeya (Loughborough Lightning, 23 caps) 8 Alex Matthews (Gloucester-Hartpury, 76 caps) Replacements 16 Lark Atkin-Davies (Bristol Bears, 68 caps) 17 Kelsey Clifford (Saracens, 15 caps) 18 Sarah Bern (Bristol Bears, 73 caps) 19 Rosie Galligan (Saracens, 25 caps) 20 Maddie Feaunati (Exeter Chiefs, 17 caps) 21 Lucy Packer (Harlequins, 33 caps) 22 Emily Scarratt (Loughborough Lightning, 118 caps) 23 Emma Sing (Gloucester-Hartpury, 10 caps)

Willi Castro, Cubs look to take long series against Brewers

August 20 - After making up two games of ground in a day against their National League Central rivals, the Chicago Cubs will look to take the five-game series against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night. Chicago beat Milwaukee 6-4 and then 4-1 to sweep a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday but still sits seven games behind the MLB-leading Brewers in the NL Central. Starring in both games for the Cubs was trade deadline acquisition Willi Castro, whom the club will need to produce at a higher clip in the homestretch. Castro hit a three-run shot in the first game on Tuesday -- his first home run since coming over from Minnesota last month -- and threw out Brice Turang at home from right field in the nightcap to thwart a late Milwaukee rally. Castro is hitting just .150 (6-for-40) with the Cubs but had his best day for the club in a crucial two-game doubleheader. "It's been a rough past two weeks, but we showed what we can do in the doubleheader," Castro said. "We have a great team, we have a great staff. ... It's been tough for me since I got here. I know I haven't produced as I know how. But it's OK. Whenever they give me an opportunity, I will get the job done." After a 5-8 start to August, the Cubs have won four of their last five games and hold a two-game lead over the San Diego Padres for the top wild-card spot in the NL. Hoping to continue the momentum in Game 4 of the series -- which Chicago leads 2-1 -- Colin Rea (9-5, 3.99 ERA) will make his 26th appearance (22nd start) on Wednesday for the Cubs, facing his former team for the second time this season. Last time out, the veteran right-hander allowed one run on three hits across five innings in a no-decision on Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs lost 3-2. Rea, who pitched in 59 games for the Brewers from 2021-24, is 0-1 with an 8.59 ERA in two career starts against them. He faced Milwaukee on July 29, allowing four runs in four innings in a 9-3 loss. The Brewers have dropped three of four since winning 14 consecutive games, a single-season franchise record. Milwaukee also has lost back-to-back games for the first time since July 25-26. The team's rookie phenom, Jacob Misiorowski (4-1, 3.89 ERA), is slated to make his ninth start of the season on Wednesday and second since coming off the 15-day injured list due to a left tibia contusion. The 23-year-old All Star suffered his worst outing thus far against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, surrendering five runs on four hits in just 1 1/3 innings in a game the Brewers rallied to win 10-8. "His delivery wasn't great, the mound wasn't to his liking," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said of Misiorowski. "He was emotional, but that's part of him growing up and learning how to get by, even though he didn't feel right or wasn't in sync." Misiorowski faced the Cubs for the only time on July 28, allowing three runs (two earned) over four innings in a no-decision. The Brewers won 8-4. --Field Level Media

Aces rally past Dream in potential postseason preview

August 20 - The Las Vegas Aces, led by 32 points from A'ja Wilson, rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to overtake the Atlanta Dream 74-72 and post an eighth consecutive win. Neither team had led by more than five points entering the fourth quarter, but Atlanta held a 61-57 edge and scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to go up 67-57 with 8:44 remaining. But Las Vegas then went on a 13-0 run to claim a 70-67 edge, capped by a Jewell Loyd 3-pointer with 4:09 to play. Wilson scored six points in that pivotal stretch. After the Dream pulled even at 72 on a Rhyne Howard 3-pointer, it was Wilson time again for Las Vegas. She drained a mid-range jumper to account for the winning margin with 1:15 to play. Atlanta had two possessions to answer, but Howard missed a 3-point attempt with 51.9 seconds left and a short runner in the paint with 4.2 seconds left. Brittney Griner got the carom and attempted a tip-in, but it was off the mark and the Aces' Kierstan Bell snared the rebound to seal the win. Las Vegas (22-14) forced six turnovers in the fourth quarter, including a trio of shot-clock violations, to pull within a half-game of the Dream and the New York Liberty, both 22-13, in the race for the No. 2 playoff seed behind the Minnesota Lynx. Las Vegas shot 45.3 percent (29-for-64) while holding Atlanta to 40 percent (26-for-65). Wilson's 32 points represented her third straight 30-plus-point effort in a run toward a potential fourth WNBA MVP award. Wilson shot 12-for-24 and added 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. Jackie Young added 16 points and seven boards. Chelsea Gray logged eight points, 11 assists and seven rebounds. Atlanta was led by Howard, whose 19 points included 4-for-11 3-point shooting. Allisha Gray added 16 points and six rebounds. Griner tallied 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds. The Dream will return to action on Thursday when they host league-leading Minnesota. The Aces will also play at home, facing the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday. --Field Level Media
