IMD issues orange alert for heavy rainfall in 6 districts of Himachal Pradesh over next 2 days
According to Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, moderate rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours in districts including Shimla, Sirmaur, Kullu, and Mandi.
'The highest rainfall was recorded in Rajgarh (Sirmaur district) with 72 mm, while light showers occurred in districts like Una, Bilaspur, and Solan,' Sharma told ANI.
'For July 14 and 15, we expect light to moderate rainfall in most mid-hill and low-hill districts. However, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur districts are under Orange Alert for today due to the likelihood of heavy to heavy rainfall, and this activity will continue tomorrow as well,' Sharma said.
He further informed that for July 15, districts including Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur have been put under Orange Alert for very heavy rainfall, while Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Kullu districts may witness isolated heavy rain for which a Yellow Alert has been issued.
'This spell of active monsoon is expected to continue from July 16 to July 20, during which Una, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts may receive heavy rainfall at isolated places,' said Sharma.
Discussing the seasonal rainfall trends, Sharma noted that there is an increase in monsoon rainfall above the normal.
'So far, the state has received 19% above normal rainfall this monsoon season. Shimla and Mandi districts have received almost double the average rainfall, whereas Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts have recorded deficient rainfall compared to the seasonal average. All other districts have received above-normal rainfall so far,' he added.
Regarding rainfall in July, he said, 'As of today, rainfall in the month of July has been normal.'
Sharma also mentioned that flash flood advisories and safety guidelines are being issued in real time based on meteorological inputs.
'Whenever there is a possibility of flash floods, we release advisories and alerts in coordination with the concerned authorities,' he said.
On temperature trends, he said that temperatures are normal and may drop slightly during the next two days.
'Temperatures are generally being recorded around the seasonal average. In Shimla, the maximum temperature was recorded at 23.4C, while regions around Bilaspur witnessed temperatures close to 32C. Morning temperatures are currently above normal, but are likely to fall below normal in the coming days due to increased rain activity.' He said.
The IMD has urged residents and district authorities in alert zones to remain cautious and take necessary precautions in light of the ongoing and upcoming rain spells. (ANI)

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in Tibet early Wednesday morning caused rivers flowing into Nepal to swell, prompting authorities to issue flood warnings. The rainfall has led to flooding in the Trishuli River, surging water levels in areas around Uttar Gaya in Rasuwa, and the Trishuli 3B Hub in Kispang. Authorities have also issued alerts as water levels continued to surge in the Rasugawadhi region, reports ANI. Rasuwa region, which borders the Tibetan region, was affected by a flash flood on July 8 that killed seven people, and over a dozen were reported missing after the Lhende River swept away infrastructure near the Nepal-China border. The earthquake in Tibet comes after a massive 8.7-magnitude earthquake jolted Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, prompting tsunami warnings across a wide stretch of areas, including Alaska, Hawaii, the US West Coast, and China. Russia, Japan, and Hawaii have already experienced tsunami waves following the earthquake.

17 Killed In Monsoon Fury In Himachal's Kullu, Rs 48 Crore Lost In Damages
Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district has suffered losses of over Rs 48 crore since the start of the monsoon season, with 17 people reported dead, Deputy Commissioner Torul S Raveesh said. She also informed that 65 residents of Darmedha village have been moved to safer areas as a precaution. "Since the onset of monsoon, various departments in Kullu district have suffered losses of Rs 48 crore and individual damages of Rs 50 lakh... So far, 17 people have lost their lives," Raveesh told ANI. She added, "As a precautionary measure, 65 residents of Darmedha village have been shifted to safer areas." Earlier, on Tuesday, heavy rain in the evening led to waterlogging, traffic jams, and power cuts in several parts of Dharamshala. Himachal Pradesh continues to face severe monsoon-related damage, affecting public services and endangering lives. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), as of Tuesday, 357 roads--including one National Highway--182 power transformers, and 179 water supply schemes have been disrupted across the state due to persistent rainfall and related disasters. Data from the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) show that from June 20 till date, 170 people have died during the monsoon season. Of these, 94 deaths were caused by rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, drowning, electrocution, and lightning. The remaining 76 deaths were due to road accidents. Mandi district is the worst-affected, with 259 road blockages, 172 transformer failures, and 47 water schemes disrupted. It has also reported the highest number of deaths from both natural disasters and road accidents. The disasters have damaged homes, livestock, crops, and infrastructure. Flash floods and landslides have blocked highways and cut off remote areas. Relief and rescue efforts are ongoing with the help of the NDRF, SDRF, and police teams. Officials have urged residents to avoid travelling to vulnerable areas and to remain cautious due to continued rain forecasts. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that heavy rain caused major destruction in Mandi's Jail Road area, where two people died and more are feared trapped under debris. Speaking to reporters in Shimla, Sukhu said, "Heavy rain lashed Mandi last night, causing severe damage to the Jail Road area. Two deaths have been reported. Given the scale of the disaster, I can say it resembles a cloudburst-like situation."
