Vietnam's rising role in Asean lauded by New Zealand ambassador

The Star6 days ago
HANOI: As Vietnam marks 30 years of membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) on Monday (July 28), New Zealand's Ambassador to Vietnam Caroline Beresford praised the country's pivotal contributions to regional unity and global economic integration in a recent interview with Vietnam News Agency.
Since joining Asean in 1995, Vietnam has emerged as a key player in uniting the bloc and deepening its ties with external partners, Beresford said.
Its brainchild, the Asean Future Forum (AFF), has quickly become a leading strategic dialogue platform for shaping the bloc's outlook, bringing together leaders, scholars, and business and civil society representatives.
The forum, she noted, exemplifies Vietnam's commitment and proactive spirit in promoting dialogue and cooperation with partners.
Beresford tied Vietnam's efforts to Asean's current priorities under the Asean Community Vision 2045: 'Our Shared Future', which envisions a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific with Asean at its core - a goal New Zealand strongly backs.
Speaking on Vietnam's role in strengthening Asean-New Zealand relations and Asean's engagement with other partners, Beresford pointed to Vietnam's considerable contributions.
As Asean Chair in 2010, Vietnam hosted the second Asean-New Zealand Summit in Hannoi.
A decade later, during its 2020 Asean chairmanship, Vietnam overcame the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic to successfully hold the Asean-New Zealand Leaders' Commemorative Summit virtually marking the 45th anniversary of their dialogue relations, paving the way for the launch of negotiations to upgrade the Asean-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA) in early 2021.
She also hailed Vietnam's close coordination in the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between New Zealand and Asean, expected by the end of 2025, a milestone in the 50-year Asean-New Zealand relationship.
Expressing commitment to deepening engagement with South-East Asia, Beresford wished to continue upholding effective cooperation with Asean in trade, economic integration, maritime security, education-training, peace initiatives and knowledge-sharing with future business leaders.
She expressed particular anticipation for the upcoming Asean-New Zealand Young Business Leaders Initiative (YBLI) Summit to be held in Danang and Hue, which will bring together 120 young entrepreneurs from both sides.
Congratulating Vietnam on three decades of Asean membership, the ambassador noted the country's remarkable economic progress.
Since joining Asean in 1995, its GDP has ballooned 20-fold, placing it among the world's 40 largest economies, she said.
With its dynamic development, status as a manufacturing hub, and network of 17 free trade agreements, including those with Asean and New Zealand, Vietnam is emerging as a key driver of global and regional economic integration.
Beresford underlined the country's growing influence, particularly as it prepares to assume key regional leadership roles: Chair of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) Commission in 2026 and host of the Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting (Apec) in 2027.
She expected that Vietnam would continue to play a vital role in shaping Asean's strategic directions and contributing to a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
She stressed Vietnam's potential to steer the region toward digital transformation, green growth, and enhanced connectivity, building on its strengths as a young, dynamic, tech-savvy and industrious nation.
New Zealand remains committed to partnering with Vietnam and Asean on this shared journey of cooperation and progress, she concluded. — Vietnam News/ANN

Japan's Ambassador to Thailand Otaka Masato reacts next to a woman, injured from an artillery shell that struck a 7-Eleven convenience store and gas station on July 24, which also resulted in multiple fatalities, as foreign military attaches from major powers and Asean member countries and diplomats from 23 countries inspect the site, following a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, in Sisaket province, Thailand, August 1, 2025. has invited foreign missions based in Phnom Penh to observe the implementation of the ceasefire along the border in Oddar Meanchey and Siem Reap provinces. - Reuters PHNOM PENH: Cambodia's National Defence Ministry announced on Sunday (Aug 3) that an interim Asean Defence Attache Observer Team, led by Malaysia, will monitor the implementation of the ceasefire in Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces. The team consists of military attaches from seven member states - Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam - will conduct field observations on August 3. Meanwhile, Cambodian top negotiators will head to Kuala Lumpur for the General Border Committee (GBC) negotiations, where the release of 18 soldiers held captive by the Thai army is likely to top their agenda. The soldiers are being held following a border conflict between the countries that erupted on July 24. The bilateral talks, scheduled from August 4 to 7, are part of a ceasefire agreement reached between Cambodia and Thailand on July 28, which led to temporary de-escalation and pushed back soldiers to their barracks. The GBC talks are being hosted by Malaysia in its capacity as the 2025 Asean Chair, and take place within the framework of the Asean- and internationally backed ceasefire. Cambodia is shoring up diplomatic support. It has invited foreign missions based in Phnom Penh to observe the implementation of the ceasefire along the border in Oddar Meanchey and Siem Reap provinces. More than 20 diplomats and representatives from various United Nations agencies participated in these inspection visits on Friday and Saturday. "It underscores Cambodia's steadfast commitment to international law, de-escalation and continued adherence to the Asean Charter, the UN Charter, and the ceasefire agreement," Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry told a media briefing on Saturday. "Cambodia looks forward to advancing de-escalation efforts through the upcoming General Border Committee meeting." The armed confrontation that broke out on July 24 and lasted for five days triggered a diplomatic pause between Cambodia and Thailand, two neighbours that have yet to resolve their 817-kilometre border dispute dating back to 1907. Dr Kin Phea, Director-General of the International Relations Institute of Cambodia, emphasised that both governments must honour the ceasefire agreement if lasting peace is to be achieved in the region. "Both sides must maintain utmost restraint and resolve the conflict peacefully under legal frameworks and mechanisms, and both sides must fully and consistently respect international law and the UN Charter,' he told Bernama. The dispute caused over 170,000 Cambodians to vacate their homes in several northern provinces. - Bernama

The discussions, hosted by Malaysia as the 2025 ASEAN Chair, will address the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers held by the Thai army following a border clash on July 24. The ceasefire agreement, reached on July 28, temporarily eased tensions. Soldiers withdrew to their barracks. Cambodia has also invited foreign diplomats and UN representatives to observe ceasefire compliance along the border. Over 20 officials participated in inspection visits last Friday and Saturday. Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry stated, 'Cambodia remains committed to international law, de-escalation, and the ASEAN and UN Charters.' 'We look forward to progress at the GBC meeting.' The recent conflict, lasting five days, strained diplomatic ties between Cambodia and Thailand.
