Metro to charge extra for oversized luggage
"We don't want to ruin anybody's journey. People headed to catch a flight usually don't carry multiple suitcases or bags if they choose to travel on the metro to the airport. No one will be stopped in any of the stations across the three corridors (Blue, Green, and Yellow Lines) if they are riding to or from the airport metro station. The idea is to make their journeys seamless," a senior official of Metro, which runs the city's rapid transit network, told TOI, adding that if someone has multiple bags or oversized baggage, he or she will be charged a fee.
Officials explained that the eight-car rakes used in Kolkata Metro don't have dedicated storage space like those operating in underground transit systems or semi-speed corridors abroad. The luggage fee will be charged to dissuade people from trooping in with extra and oversized suitcases, they said.

Two days ago, a Bengaluru commuter raised questions over Namma Metro's policy of charging him for oversized luggage, claiming he was asked to pay Rs 30 for carrying a suitcase during his ride.
The post, shared on X, sparked a wider discussion on whether the fee is justified.
Metro Railway officials said passengers carrying one or two suitcases of the usual sizes (around 18 by 24 inches) would be given a pass after scanning. Fees would be clamped only on those carrying more. "We are still working on the nitty-gritty of charges, based on the number and sizes of the luggage being carried. We shall have to watch commuter behaviour for a few days before fixing the rules," a senior Metro official said.
Metro Railway slackened its luggage rules last year when East-West Metro's Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section was opened. Metro Railway general manager P Uday Kumar Reddy had then said that the rules were being changed for the sake of passengers alighting from trains at Howrah station.
Most domestic airlines allow flyers to carry suitcases up to 15 kg as checked-in luggage and up to 7 kg as cabin baggage. Trains, too, have a luggage weight limit, but it's seldom enforced.
Earlier, security personnel at metro stations would bar passengers from carrying suitcases on trains. The "prohibition" has been gradually lifted, even though there was no official announcement.
With the airport-metro launch, Kolkata will join Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, and Chennai, where domestic flyers may avoid expensive cabs to travel to the airport. They can zip between Esplanade and Airport stations in 30 minutes for just Rs 50. Tickets from the airport metro station to those between Chandni Chowk and Tollygunge will cost Rs 40, and to those between Kudghat and Sahid Khudiram stations, Rs 45.

Barricades installed at RV Road interchange station in Bengaluru to manage rush
Bengaluru: As thousands of commuters throng RV Road interchange after the Yellow Line launch, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has installed barricades on platforms. This is the first time an elevated Metro station in Bengaluru has been fitted with barricades; only platforms of the underground Majestic interchange had them until now. There are large queues daily at RV Road station as passengers board trains to Electronics City or switch to the Green Line. With a daily interchange volume of 30,000-35,000 passengers, crowd management has become a major task for security staff. Despite the longer waiting time, the IT corridor link is witnessing a surge in ridership, helping Namma Metro cross the 10-lakh daily passenger mark. "As part of crowd management, barricades have been installed on RV Road station platforms to streamline passenger boarding. We have deployed adequate security staff to manage the rush. Such barricades were earlier installed only at Majestic interchange," said BL Yeshwanth Chavan, chief PRO of BMRCL. Namma Metro now operates over 95km with 85 stations. None of the stations has platform screen doors, but there is a growing demand for them after several incidents of passengers falling onto tracks and suicide attempts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? It will take a couple of weeks to assemble the coaches and complete mandatory tests. "After various tests, the new trainset must also undergo trial runs on the mainline. With limited night hours available for trials, it will take 15-20 days to finish all requirements before commencing commercial operations," Chavan said. The additional train is likely to help BMRCL run Yellow Line services at a frequency of 20 minutes. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Train delays, cancellations inconvenience passengers
Pune: Passengers were inconvenienced because of train unavailability and major delays on Tuesday night and Wednesday because the heavy rain led to cancellation and rescheduling of a number of trains, including the ones operating between Pune and Mumbai, even though rail tracks had cleared up by Tuesday evening. City resident Manideep Mittal was returning to Pune from Ratlam on the Jaipur-Pune Superfast Express. He said he didn't know his trip would become a torture. "I boarded the train at 7.45 pm on Tuesday and we were supposed to reach Pune at 8.05 am on Wednesday. I was to join office after reaching home. The train reached Surat around 1 am and was rescheduled because of heavy rain in Mumbai. We were not informed through any medium. The train stood near Jalgaon from 7 am to 11 am on Wednesday," he said. Till the time of going to press, Mittal was still stranded and told TOI: "We have no idea when we will reach Pune." Harindar Singh was onboard the Amritsar Express which started 10 hours late from CSMT. He hoped the train would recover on lost time. "However, once a train is delayed, the timings go for a toss since priority is given to other trains. It has been a rough trip," he said. "The train ran for a distance and stopped. Our connecting journey plans went for a toss. It is such an inconvenience to so many passengers, especially amid zero update by the railways," he posted on X. Sangamwadi resident Madhav Buchate said he had no idea that all intercity trains between Pune and Mumbai were non-operational on Wednesday. "I had important work in Mulund and reached the Pune station in the morning to catch the Deccan Queen. I looked for shared cabs along the station road when I came to know that the train was cancelled. Three of them shockingly demanded Rs1,500. Finally, I went to the Pune station MSRTC stand and took a bus to Mumbai," the working professional said. MSRTC officials of Pune division said no additional buses were plying because of train cancellations. "There are around 130 buses, including E-Shivneri buses, which operate between Pune and Mumbai daily. The passenger load in the buses is less than 40% on Wednesdays. Buses could have been increased but not too many people were travelling to Mumbai for fear of getting stuck. The same was for routes to Solapur and Kolhapur. The passenger traffic in each of the buses was around 50%," an official told TOI. Gautam Sable, a working professional, said he had to skip work. "I work in Navi Mumbai and often take a bus. However, I have had to skip work for two days now. I don't want to take any risk and then suffer," he said. In Pune city, compared to Monday, breakdown of PMPML buses increased on Tuesday. Kishore Chauhan, the PRO, said, "On Tuesday, 80 buses broke down because of the rain." On Monday, 69 buses suffered breakdowns. The actual trips on Wednesday were 19,255 compared to the planned 21,271. Kalyaninagar resident Nimish Sathe said, "Surprisingly, my bus came on time on Wednesday, maybe because of little traffic on the streets. " Divisional commercial manager and PRO of the Pune rail division Hemant Kumar Behera said train operations had returned to normal. "The Up line from Pune to Mumbai became fully operational around 9.15pm on Tuesday and the Down line became operational by 10.23pm. All intercity trains are to resume services from Thursday. We will update if there are any fresh development," he told TOI. Another railway official said that even with the lines becoming operational, things took a lot of time with many trains remaining stuck. "The lines were opened to rail traffic and trains have started to move slowly. The process is time taking and needs proper planning and execution," he added. Meanwhile, in Mumbai, the Central Railway limped back to normalcy on Wednesday after heavy rainfall late on Tuesday night. Services on both Harbour and Main lines were back to normal by Wednesday afternoon. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
