PM Modi hails Telangana's ‘drone didis' as sky warriors transforming agriculture in Sangareddy
HYDERABAD: During his Mann Ki Baat programme on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the 'sky warriors' of Sangareddy district — women trained by the district administration to operate drones for agricultural work.
'My dear countrymen, today there are many women who are working in the fields as well as touching the heights of the sky. Yes! You heard it right, now the women of the village are flying drones as Drone Didi and ushering in a new revolution in agriculture,' the PM noted.
Modi stated, 'Friends, in Sangareddy district of Telangana, women who until recently had to depend on others are now completing the work of spraying pesticides on 50 acres of land with the help of drones. Three hours in the morning, two hours in the evening and the work is done. Friends, the villagers have also accepted this change wholeheartedly. Now, these women are not known as 'drone operators' but as 'sky warriors'. These women are telling us that change comes when technology and determination go together.'
It may be recalled that TNIE published a story 'Farm tech takes feminist flight in Sangareddy fields' on April 6, 2025, which featured these women, who began using drones for spraying pesticides upon being encouraged by the District Collector Valluri Kranthi.

Air India Plane Crash: Ahmedabad airport shut, flight operations temporarily suspended till further orders
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, is currently not operational after the Air India flight crash incident on 12 June. The Minister informed the Prime Minister that he is rushing to Ahmedabad to oversee rescue and relief operations on the ground, the statement from the ministry said. 'The Prime Minister has directed the Minister to ensure all necessary support is extended immediately and asked to be kept regularly updated on the situation,' it said. The Air India flight was piloted by Captain Sumit Sabharwal and co-piloted by Clive Kunder. Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu has rushed to Ahmedabad, following the news of the Air India plane crash. Ahmedabad airport operations have been suspended due to a plane crash involving an Air India aircraft, which occurred on 12 June, 2025, shortly after takeoff. 'As a result of Air India plane crash incident,Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA), Ahmedabad, is currently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice', the airport spokesperson said.

India's Social Security Coverage Increased By 64% In 10 Years: Centre
New Delhi: India has achieved a milestone in the realm of social protection coverage, recording one of the most significant expansions globally. According to the latest data from the International Labour Organisation's (ILO) ILOSTAT database, India's social security coverage has increased from 19% in 2015 to 64.3% in 2025, an unprecedented 45 percentage point surge over the past decade. While holding a bilateral discussion with the Director General, ILO, Gilbert F Houngbo on the sidelines of the International Labour Conference (ILC), Union Minister of Labour and Employment and Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, highlighted the pro-poor and labour welfare schemes undertaken by the Modi Government over the past 11 years. According to an official release, Union Minister also apprised DG ILO about the national-level Social Protection Data Pooling Exercise that has been carried out by the Government in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation, a release said. Recognising these efforts, ILO acknowledged India's achievement and officially published on its dashboard that 64.3 per cent of India's population, i.e. over 94 crore people, are now covered under at least one social protection benefit. In 2015, this figure was just 19 per cent. In terms of beneficiary count, India now ranks second in the world, providing social protection to around 94 crore citizens. DG ILO praised India's focused welfare policies for the poor and labour class under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. ILO's Criteria for Scheme Consideration for each country include that the scheme should be legislatively backed, in cash and be active, and verified time series data of the last three years has to be provided. Speaking from Geneva, Mandaviya said, "This remarkable achievement stands as a testament to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the relentless efforts of the Government in building an inclusive and rights-based social protection ecosystem. The increase marks the fastest expansion in social protection coverage worldwide, reflecting the Government's unwavering commitment to 'Antyodaya', i.e. empowering the last mile and fulfilling the promise of leaving no one behind". The release said it is important to note that the present figure reflects only Phase I of the data pooling exercise. "This phase focused on beneficiary data of Central sector schemes and women-centric schemes in the selected 8 States. With Phase II and further consolidation underway, it is expected that India's total social protection coverage will soon surpass the 100-crore mark upon verification of additional schemes by the ILO," the release said. India is also the first country globally to update its 2025 social protection coverage data in the ILOSTAT database, reinforcing its leadership in digital governance and transparency in welfare systems. The release said that increase in Social Protection Coverage will further strengthen India's global engagements, particularly in finalising Social Security Agreements (SSAs) with developed nations. These agreements will ensure the portability of social protection benefits for Indian professionals working overseas, while offering partner countries the transparency required for mutual recognition frameworks. This will further bolster India's position in trade and labour mobility negotiations by showcasing a credible and robust social protection regime, the release said. Mandaviya is leading an Indian delegation to Geneva, Switzerland, from June 10 to 12 to participate in the 113th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) of the ILO.

EAM Jaishankar meets Macron, thanks French President for backing India's fight against terrorism
Paris: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Thursday called on French President Emmanuel Macron during his official visit to France, conveying greetings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressing gratitude for France's support in India's fight against terrorism. India and France have completed 25 years of strategic partnership and India's relations with France are rooted in deep trust and commitment. During this visit, EAM would travel to Paris and Marseille where he would be holding bilateral discussions with his counterpart Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, Jean Noel Barrot. He will also engage with the senior leadership of France, and interact with think tanks and media. EAM would also participate in the inaugural edition of the Mediterranean Raisina Dialogue which is being held in the city of Marseille," read a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) ahead of the EAM's visit. In April, after the heinous Pahalgam terror attack, Macron dialled Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that France stands firmly with India and its people in this hour of grief. Macron also said that France will stand together with its allies and would continue the fight against terrorism wherever necessary. The External Affairs Minister is on an official visit to France, European Union and Belgium from June 8 to 14 to further deepen India's friendly relations and give renewed momentum to ongoing cooperation in diverse areas. On Wednesday, India and the European Union signed an agreement on Trilateral Cooperation that focuses on joint priorities and supports pilot projects in third countries. The agreement driving forward India–EU engagement in connectivity, India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), green shipping and clean energy was signed in the presence of EAM Jaishankar and Jozef Sikela, the European Commissioner for International Partnership. Both sides noted that the signing of the trilateral cooperation agreement will benefit the Global South. During his visit to Brussels from June 9-11, EAM Jaishankar also called on Belgium's King Philippe, Prime Minister Bart De Wever and held delegation level talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot. On the EU side, EAM called on President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola. He also co-chaired the first India-EU Strategic Dialogue with EU High Representative and Vice President Kaja Kallas.
