Tsunami alert after powerful quakes strike off coast of Russia
Earlier 5.0-magnitude and 6.7-magnitude earthquakes did not initially trigger a tsunami alert, but were followed by a 7.4-magnitude quake at 8.49 GMT, prompting the USGS to warn that "hazardous tsunami waves are possible".
It said the tsunami alert zone applied for coastal areas within a radius of 300km of the epicentre in the Pacific Ocean, off the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
The state of Alaska sits across the Bering Sea from the city, but no US territory appeared to be in the alert zone.
The initial earthquakes were followed by several aftershocks, including another 6.7-magnitude quake, said USGS.
The epicentre was around 140km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, capital of the Kamchatka region.
The Kamchatka peninsula is the meeting point of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates, making it a seismic hot zone.

At least three dead after tourist vessel overturns
Three bodies have been recovered after a tourist boat in Vietnam capsized with 53 people on board. The boat - which had the registration number QN-7105 - was carrying 48 tourists and five crew members near Đầu Gỗ Cave off the coast of Ha Long Bay when it was hit by a sudden squall and overturned, according to local media. 10 people have been rescued so far, while three bodies have sadly been recovered from the water. Torrential rain pounds South Korea for third day as thousands take shelter
Warnings of torrential rain remained in effect for most of the country's western and southern regions and the weather service advised extreme caution with landslides and flooding possible through Saturday. More than 5,000 people were evacuated at one time, but the number of people in shelters had fallen to 3,297 as of 11 a.m. (0200 GMT), the Interior and Safety Ministry said. President Lee Jae Myung has called for a stronger government role in disaster prevention and response, saying that while natural disasters are hard to prevent, more can be done to anticipate damage and warn the public.
