49ers' Malik Mustapha to miss start of season with knee injury: Source

New York Times27-04-2025

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers fifth-round draft pick Marques Sigle might have a better-than-expected shot at a prominent role this season after it was revealed that one of last year's top safeties is recovering from a serious knee injury.
ESPN reported Saturday that Malik Mustapha, who started 12 games as a rookie in 2024, damaged the graft that was used to repair an ACL tear he sustained while at Wake Forest in 2022. Mustapha is believed to have suffered the injury in the 49ers' season finale against the Arizona Cardinals on Jan. 5. He left that contest in the second quarter and didn't return.

While the injury isn't considered as severe as a complete rupture, which can affect the meniscus in the knee, he's still expected to be out until roughly the midpoint of the season, a league source confirmed. Meanwhile, another 2024 starter at safety, Talanoa Hufanga, signed a three-year deal with the Denver Broncos last month.
That likely leaves the 49ers with Ji'Ayir Brown as the front-runner for one of the safety spots with an offseason competition for the other. Among the contenders are George Odum, who started two games for the 49ers last year, and free-agent additions Jason Pinnock and Richie Grant, who have 39 and 33 career starts, respectively.
Sigle is another option. He was one of the fastest defensive backs at the combine, running his 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds. He played cornerback at North Dakota State before transferring to Kansas State, where he was used as a hybrid safety/nickel cornerback.
Sigle said his versatility was one of his best attributes.
'I can play multiple positions,' he said Saturday. 'I can play free safety, strong safety, nickel and dime.'
General manager John Lynch agreed.
'First of all, he's a bow-legged safety and like I told him, you can't go wrong with the bow-legged safety,' Lynch said. 'He's a good tackler. A term we use is 'taking the grass' and this is a guy who takes the grass. He takes the fight to the ball carrier to the receiver. I think he's going to be a really good fit for us.'

Jennifer Kupcho Gets Candid After Ending 3-Year Drought originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The ShopRite LPGA Classic once again lived up to its legacy, delivering thrilling moments on a rain-soaked Seaview Bay Course in Galloway, New Jersey. Known as a 54-hole sprint, the event has a strong tradition of major champions taking the crown 20 in the last 27 editions and this year was no different. Advertisement Jennifer Kupcho clinched her fourth LPGA title with a closing 5-under 66, finishing at 15-under 198, one shot ahead of South Korea's Ilhee Lee. The 28-year-old golfer hadn't won since her three-title run in 2022. She entered the week following a missed cut at the U.S. Women's Open but quickly rebounded. Reinhold Matay-Imagn Images "So like random stuff like that just to like keep my mind off of it," Kupcho said. At no.2 of the tournament, Ilhee Lee was playing her first event of 2025 and reminded everyone of her talent despite limited play in recent years. Her 68 wasn't quite enough, but she left a mark with her inspiring comeback story. Kupcho said she stayed in her zone and was simply trying to hit a target. 'I think in my mind I had set on 14 under, so I was really just trying to get to that number. Obviously did a little better,' she said per ESPN. Advertisement Even while leading, she found ways to lighten the mood. 'Halfway through the round we were trying to figure out the difference between an otter and a beaver,' Kupcho laughed. 'Just random stuff like that to keep my mind off it.' Earlier this year, Kupcho had tough conversations with her support team. 'I felt like I had completely lost what I was doing,' she admitted. But on Sunday, with the rain falling and nerves calm, she rediscovered her rhythm, and her smile. Aaron Judge irked after Red Sox rookie Hunter Dobbins disses Yankees: 'I was a little surprised'

New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge is kind of like the Hulk, you wouldn't like him when he's angry. One Boston Red Sox rookie pitcher found that out the hard way during Sunday's game. In his first at-bat Sunday night, Judge smacked a solo home run against Red Sox starter Hunter Dobbins. It was an 108.6 mph blast to right center that traveled 436 feet. And Judge probably felt a little extra satisfaction after he hit it. Advertisement Prior to the contest, Dobbins caught some attention after saying he would rather retire than play for the Yankees. Dobbins, whose father is a die-hard Red Sox fan, said he was really looking forward to playing against the Yankees, and that if New York was "the last team to give me a contract, I'd retire," per the Boston Herald. Those comments made it over to the Yankees' clubhouse before the contest, and some players took exception to them. Following the game, Judge said he was "surprised" when he was informed about Dobbins' comments, per ESPN. "I've only heard Ken Griffey say that, so I was a little surprised," Judge said. Griffey made similar comments during his playing career. The Hall of Famer held a grudge against the Yankees after the way the team treated him when his father — Ken Griffey Sr. — played for the franchise. Griffey made those comments in the midst of a Hall of Fame career. Dobbins made them prior to appearing in his 10th game in the majors. After hearing what Dobbins had to say about the Yankees, Judge admitted he was thinking about those comments when he stepped into the batter's box Sunday, per ESPN. "Well, once somebody tells you, yeah," Judge said. Advertisement That may have given Judge a little extra motivation prior to his home run. While Judge won the first battle against Dobbins, the Red Sox rookie won the war. Dobbins was awarded with the win after allowing three runs over five innings of work. Despite not recording any strikeouts, Dobbins was able to out-duel Yankees starter Carlos Rodón, who allowed five runs over five innings. The Red Sox went on to win the contest 11-7. The loss can't be blamed on Judge, who walked, singled and hit another home run following his first-inning blast. He finished the contest 3-for-4, with three runs scored and four RBI. Advertisement Despite the loss, the Yankees are still in fantastic position overall. Entering Monday, the team sits at 39-25, leading the American League East. If Judge and his teammates want to enact revenge against Dobbins, they could have that opportunity soon. Various injuries have pushed Dobbins in the Red Sox's rotation, ensuring he should get at least another start or two. The Red Sox and Yankees begin another series June 13, and Dobbins would be scheduled to face them again in that series assuming he stays in his normal rotation slot.

49ers veterans share appreciation for final stages of offseason program

The San Francisco 49ers have a lot to prove in 2025, as they look to crawl out of the basement of the NFC West (after finishing with a 6-11 record last year) and make it back to the postseason. San Francisco will close out their offseason program this week with two mandatory minicamp sessions on Tuesday (June 10) and Wednesday (June 11), and every one not recovering from an injury is expected to participate at this time. This time of the year is all about laying the ground work and building relationships with your teammates, and that's exactly what quarterback Brock Purdy told ESPN's Nick Wagoner. "It's just so important that we're just around each other a lot doing little different activities and continuing to build chemistry," Purdy said. "That's the kind of stuff that matters when you get late in the season and things get tough and you go through some tough things as a team; you want to be able to know the guy next to you and what he's about and that he's going to have your back." The 49ers roster has changed quite a bit this offseason, with key players like Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga, Charvarius Ward, Deebo Samuel, Aaron Banks and Leonard Floyd all playing for new teams in 2025, and others, including Bryce Huff, Demarcus Robinson, Jason Pinnock, Tre Brown and Thomas Morstead joining San Francisco. Those changes from one year to the next make this part of the calendar so important. "It's a very different looking team this year, so I think that was important, and it's just been cool to be out here during a time where I can kind of relax and have some fun on the weekends and hang out with the guys a little bit," defensive end Nick Bosa said. Tight end George Kittle, who is about as intense on the field as anyone in the NFL, also knows that there's value in the work that's being done during these days and weeks. "When all your best players are here, kind of setting the tone, setting an example specifically because we have so many new guys, whether it's free agents, whether it's young guys, rookies, we're trying to get them in that same mindset that we have established," Kittle said. "And it's something that we have to reestablish every single year. The vibes are high. I would say they're immaculate and guys are practicing well, guys are competing." This is just the beginning of a long road that the 49ers are hoping ends in a third trip to the Super Bowl in the last seven seasons. Everything that's learned during the offseason program stacks on top of each other, taking concepts on the field (and relationships off of it) to the next level. While minicamp may inconsequential at the end of the year, to those who live it, it's anything but. More 49ers: NFL analyst picks 49ers to accomplish improbable achievement this year
