Home & Away and Neighbours star Mat Stevenson details being ‘drugged and raped' by two men before TV fame

West Australian5 hours ago
Former Home & Away and Neighbours star Mat Stevenson has revealed the devastating ordeal he faced before finding television fame, an incident he says sent him into years of self-destruction.
The 56‑year‑old played Skinner on Neighbours in 1988 before playing heartthrob Adam Cameron on Home & Away from 1989 to 1994.He told
The Sydney Morning Herald
that shortly before landing his iconic role, he was exploring a possible career in real estate when a business presentation took a horrific turn.
The actor recalled being offered a drink by one of the men present, and soon after, feeling himself lose control.
'This other bloke (then) came out of nowhere. I was paralysed, I was a strong young kid, I was a good sportsman, but I was paralysed,' he said.
Stevenson said that the two men raped him while he was 'blacked out.'
The next morning, he woke up alone. 'I was in a fair bit of pain, and I was late for work. I told my dad, I said, 'I think I've just been raped', and he ignored it,' he said. They never spoke about it again.
Just one day later, Stevenson received a phone call telling him he had scored a role on Neighbours, the beginning of a career that would eventually take him to Home & Away.
'I just so badly wanted to be there that I suppressed that assault,' he said. 'I was just, bang, straight down into denial.'
While his on-screen success grew, the pain endured.
'Inside, I just felt like my soul was being ripped out … I wanted to scream,' Stevenson said.
'I didn't know how to unpack the pain, so I'd mask it. I built a character around me, which was the character that people saw. He looks laid-back, he looks laconic, he looks like he doesn't care about much. I had to hide those demons that were inside. It was really painful, and I found that it would spike whenever I had absolute moments of success or joy.'
His world was shaken again when his father died of a heart attack in the 1990s. 'I was full of self-loathing,' he said.
'It was like I was allergic to myself. My dad's death really ramped up my high-risk behaviour: alcohol and gambling. I shut down. I put up this facade that I didn't give a s**t. I just couldn't handle life any more. I didn't have the skills to navigate my way through it.'
After leaving Home & Away in 1994, he spiralled further, losing everything and ending up homeless within a year.
'I was just in free fall, suffering in silence, spending what little money I had left and finding solace in the bottom of a schooner glass. I walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge; it was pissing down, and I remember standing there and thinking, 'Righto, if you want to do it, now's the time. But if you don't do it now, it's time to move out of pity town. It's time to move on.''

Former The Block judge Neale Whitaker joins Seven's rival reno show

Former The Block judge Neale Whitaker has been announced as one of the judges on Seven's upcoming rival home renovation show, My Reno Rules. Whitaker had served as a judge on Nine's hit reno show The Block since its third season back in 2010, but announced in May last year that he was leaving the show. The announcement came after the NSW-based interior design expert earlier scaled back his on-air commitments in 2023 to spend more time with his long-term partner David while he battled ill health. Whitaker's new role on My Reno Rules means he's the second former Block personality to have a key role in the show: The Block 's serial buyer Adrian Portelli, who bought all five houses at last year's Block auctions, announced last month that he'd joined My Reno Rules as the show's principal sponsor. It came after Portelli insisted his big showing at last year's Block auction would be his swan song from the show – and Block host Scott Cam later said the feeling was mutual, confessing he was keen to let everyday buyers get a look-in on auction day once more. Joining Whitaker on the judging panel for My Reno Rules are Simon Cohen, buyer's agent from the show Luxe Listings Sydney, and interior design expert Julia Green. 'I'm thrilled to be joining a show that will truly redefine renovation TV. Along with Simon and Julia, I get to share my experience with a new generation of Aussie renovators in one of my favourite cities,' Whitaker said in a statement provided by Seven today, ahead of the show airing next year. Announcing his departure from The Block last year, Whitaker said it had been 'such a privilege to be part of Australia's most iconic TV show for an unbelievable 13 years – unbelievable to me, anyway.' Real estate agent Marty Fox stepped in to replace Whitaker, joining longtime Block judges Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer.

Buckingham Palace makes shock error in Princess Anne tribute online as royal celebrates 75th birthday

Buckingham Palace has been forced to quietly delete a celebratory post for Princess Anne after it contained a glaring error about her family. The Princess Royal, the only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, and sister to King Charles III, turns 75 on Friday. To mark the milestone, the Palace released a list of "75 facts" about the beloved royal on Wednesday. But one detail quickly raised eyebrows among sharp-eyed royal fans, prompting the entire piece to be pulled from the official site. Fact number 14 claimed that Princess Anne had two stepchildren- named Tom and Amy Laurence- from her second marriage to her current husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence. In reality, Sir Timothy did not have any children prior to their 1992 wedding, and Anne was his first wife. The Princess has two children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, from her first marriage to Olympic equestrian Captain Mark Phillips. One puzzled user wrote on X: "#14 Tom and Amy Laurence? Either I've gone crazy or Sir Tim Laurence has secret children. Pretty sure this is an error, but how did that happen? I can't think of any Tom & Amy siblings in the extended royal family." Another joked: "That would be the best hidden royal secret ever." A third questioned whether AI had played a role: "That is so odd? Could it be an AI mistake? Someone at BP made that list with chatgpt but didn't check it? Otherwise that would be one heck of a plot twist." It's unclear how the false information ended up in the tribute, though the same error appeared in a Woman & Home magazine article several years ago. Some have speculated the piece's author may have unknowingly relied on AI, but a palace insider denied this, telling the Daily Mail on Thursday: "The facts were checked, and that one was a late addition, sourced from a reputable publication online, which unfortunately wasn't put back through the checking process. There was no AI sourcing on our part." By Wednesday night the article had vanished, replaced with a "page not found" notice. It has since been reuploaded with the mistake removed. Known for her quick wit and no-nonsense style, Princess Anne, officially recognised for four consecutive years as the "Hardest Working Royal", is likely to have taken the mishap in good humour. Alongside the corrected article, the Royal Family shared a new official portrait taken by her long-time photographer John Swannell at her Gatcombe Park home last month. The image shows Anne in a tailored royal blue dress with a crisp white collar, matching cuffs and a row of white buttons down the front- the same outfit she wore to The King's Foundation Awards in June. In line with her character, the Princess chose not to hold a public celebration for her birthday. Instead, she hosted a reception for over 100 charities that she supports at Buckingham Palace in June, personally greeting more than 200 guests to express her gratitude for their work. Anne, who began her royal duties at the age of 18, has been involved with more than 300 charities to date. On her last working day before turning 75, she visited a stable in Liverpool, an oat mill in Cheshire, and an animal feed factory. However, she plans to spend her birthday sailing around Scotland's Western Isles with Sir Timothy.
