See you on the other side – James Maddison vows to bounce back from ACL misery
It occurred months after a different knee issue ruled Maddison out of Tottenham's Europa League final triumph over Manchester United in May and despite being set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines during a World Cup year, the 28-year-old promised to silence those who 'mock' his misfortune.
Lowest low I've ever had. Heartbroken at the fact this injury has occurred at this time in my career. With the Super Cup tomorrow, the premier league season on the horizon, the exciting champions league campaign & it being a World Cup year for England it all feels very very cruel… pic.twitter.com/m0TgKlo8Sk

'Lowest low I've ever had,' Spurs vice-captain Maddison said on X along with a picture of him on a hospital bed surrounded by his three children.
'Heartbroken at the fact this injury has occurred at this time in my career. With the Super Cup tomorrow, the Premier League season on the horizon, the exciting Champions League campaign and it being a World Cup year for England it all feels very very cruel but nevertheless the ACL reconstruction surgery was successful.
'To all my close friends and family, your support and love means absolutely everything to me.
'To those of you who have gone out of your way to message on social media platforms in support of me and my recovery even when we don't know each other personally, I appreciate you all more than you'll ever know so thank you.
'And lastly to those of you who doubt, hate and mock. You truly motivate me to levels I didn't know I had inside of me so again, thank you. See you all on the other side.'
Maddison is expected to be sidelined for around nine months, but it may take up to a year and a half for the seven-cap England international to return to his previous best level – after he scored 12 times in 45 appearances for Spurs in the 2024-25 campaign.
Sports scientist Dr Rajpal Brar, who runs 3cb Performance rehab centres in Los Angeles and Valencia, told the PA news agency: 'This is typically an eight- to nine-month return to play process for elite footballers but also depends on the full extent of the injury.
'For return to pre-injury levels, I'm typically looking around the 18-month mark.'

Bruno Fernandes reveals warning to any Man Utd stars who 'step out of line'
Bruno Fernandes feels that the standards at Manchester United have risen and now players who 'step out of line' face consequences and will have problems. The Red Devils get their new Premier League campaign underway on Sunday as they host Arsenal at Old Trafford in the standout fixture of the opening weekend. It is a huge test for Ruben Amorim's new-look side as they try to vastly improve on finishing 15th in the top flight last season. There have been big changes at the club over the summer, with Amorim now boasting an entirely new forward line of Matheus Cunha. Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. There has also been work on outgoings, which continues to be done, as Marcus Rashford has left for Barcelona on loan, while negotiations to get rid of Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony ongoing. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. Fernandes feels there has been something of a reset on culture and attitude under Amorim, admitting that standards had slipped and players knew they could get away with not meeting expectations. He says that is no longer the case and anyone not hitting the heights required under Amorim know they will face the consequences. 'The atmosphere in the pre-season tour was very good,' the Red Devils captain told Sky Sports. 'It was something the team probably needed, also for the ones who just came to the club. I can say that you feel a different atmosphere. 'We are all in the same path, in the same line. We know what we want from the season, where we have to go. We know the line we have drawn for ourselves and if someone steps out of that line, they're going to have consequences. 'I think that's a very important thing because in the past, we probably thought that even if you step outside the line a bit, you'll be okay. But now we've spoken, not only the manager, but the players have also spoken. We've said what is the minimum standard that we need and whoever steps out of this will have problems. Not only with the staff, but also with the teammates.' Amorim has created as six-player leadership group within his squad, which includes Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui and Tom Heaton. Explaining his thinking behind the group earlier this summer, Amorim said: 'It's not just Bruno, it's not just Harry, it's six guys now. They are responsible for the group. There are some things that in the last year I had to deal with that. 'I said to them in this year, you deal with that. Small issues are with you guys. You are responsible. All these small changes, I think it's helping the group. 'We have Bruno, we have Licha, we have Harry, we have Diogo, we have Tom and we have Nous. So it's not just the oldest ones. Nous is in the group because he's a character that I like. And I try to understand the dynamic of the group and try to reach every space. They are the guys that are responsible to keep everyone in line.' Fernandes expanded on this, saying that the six players were picked as they can influence every area of the squad. More Trending 'If you create this group of six players who can get into every small group in the dressing room, because it's normal to have more bond with some people than others, that will happen not only in football but in life,' said the Portuguese talisman. 'So, the way the manager chose the six players is that he knows he can get to every spot in the dressing room to get the best out of everyone. 'Obviously, everyone in that group has different ways of leading, different ways of dealing with problems. It was something I was doing in the past, but probably it gets to a point where my voice gets a little tiring for them, with always the same one talking. Having another five players with me talking and saying things will make things different.' Amorim will be without two of his leadership group on the pitch on Sunday, with Mazraoui and Martinez out with injury, the former likely to be back at the end of this month, while the latter will not return until October, most likely. However, there was better news on the injury front as goalkeeper Andre Onana is available after missing much of pre-season with a hamstring problem and Joshua Zirkzee is also fit. Transfer news live: Spurs near Eze breakthrough in blow for Arsenal, Man United latest
Tottenham are hoping to pull off a £55m deal for Eberechi Eze after taking the lead over Arsenal in the race to sign the Crystal Palace winger. Eze is reportedly likely to miss Palace's Premier League opener against Chelsea on Sunday as negotiations ramp up over his future, with Spurs keen to add to their squad after James Maddison's injury and Son Heung Min's departure. With a fortnight left of the summer transfer window, it is one of the biggest deals still left to be resolved. Manchester United have spent big on new forwards and may rival Manchester City for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma – although the Old Trafford club have ended their pursuit of Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. They will need to make some sales with Jadon Sancho being targeted by Besiktas and Roma, Antony wanted by Benfica and Chelsea interested in Alejandro Garnacho. Liverpool, meanwhile, have signed teenage defender Giovanni Leoni as they hope to bolster their defence. The club also remain in talks with Crystal Palace over Marc Guehi and the London side may want to cash in before his contract expires next summer. The Reds still hold an interest in Alexander Isak, who was absent from Newcastle's opening weekend draw at Aston Villa on Saturday, but they will need to spend big money to secure him.
