Seven devotees killed after wall collapses at Andhra's Simhachalam Temple; CM announces Rs 25 lakh ex gratia
The incident occurred in the Rs 300 queue line where devotees had gathered for the 'Nijaroopa Darshan' of the deity.
Officials stated that the wall collapsed due to heavy rainfall that occurred between 2:30 am and 3:30 am. The wall, constructed just 20 days ago, is suspected to have given way due to the downpour.
However, the exact cause for the wall collapse is still under investigation. The collapse took place shortly after the temple's hereditary trustee, P Ashok Gajapathi Raju, offered silk robes to the deity as part of the traditional ritual.
The deceased have been identified as Kumpatla Manikanta Eswara Sesha Rao (29) and Pathi Durga Prasad Naidu (30), both natives of Korlapativaripalem, Machavaram in Ambajipeta mandal of Konaseema (Dr B R Ambedkar) district and residents of Visakhapatnam; Yedla Venkata Rao (58) from Mamidithota area in Visakhapatnam; Pilla Mahesh (30) and his wife Pilla Sailaja (27) of Chandrampalem in Madhurawada; Sailaja's aunt Gujjari Mahalakshmi (65), a resident of HB Colony; and Sailaja's mother Pyla Venkata Ratnam (45), also from Visakhapatnam. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire services, and police were deployed immediately.
Visakhapatnam district Collector M N Harendhira Prasad, Police Commissioner Dr Shanka Brata Bagchi, and Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha visited the site and supervised relief efforts.
CM N Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the incident and held a teleconference with ministers A Ramanarayana Reddy, D Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, Vangalapudi Anitha, A Satya Prasad, MP Bharat, and temple trustee Ashok Gajapathi Raju.

Kishtwar cloudburst: Search continues as families look for those missing
In Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district, the search operation continues for those missing after a cloudburst hit Chasoti village, which claimed 61 lives. Ravi Kumar, who came from Jammu, said he is searching for his sister and other family members after losing his elder sister in the disaster. He added that he has contacted the GMC in Jammu and the Kishtwar administration for updates on the ongoing search operation. Speaking to ANI, Ravi Kumar said, "I have come from Jammu to find my family members missing after the incident... My sister, her children, her mother-in-law and sister-in-law... My elder sister died in the Kishtwar cloud burst incident... We talked to the GMC in Jammu and talked to the Kishtwar administration as well for an update on the search for our relatives during the search operation..." Teams from NDRF, SDRF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, CISF, Indian Army, and the local administration are working on the seventh day of the rescue operation. A day earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that it might be impossible to find anyone alive in the Kishtwar incident, stating that the disaster took place due to a cloudburst rather than a breach of glacial lakes. "Finding the missing persons alive now looks nearly impossible. In these circumstances, we will try to retrieve as many bodies and hand them over to their loved ones. According to the information we have received so far, the disaster that happened in Kishtwar was due to a cloudburst and not a glacial lake breach," Omar Abdullah told reporters. The cloudburst, which occurred during the Machail Mata Yatra on August 14, led to devastating flash floods, leaving around 55 people dead in Kishtwar. Security forces have since intensified relief and rescue efforts in the affected region.

Incessant rain, floods wreak havoc in AP districts
Vijayawada, Aug 19 (UNI) Incessant rain and floods have wreaked havoc in Coastal Andhra districts and crops in about two lakh acres marooned in the flood water. According to official sources, incessant rains and foods affected 106 mandals in 14 districts. Over 900 villages across the state were affected by the floods. ASR, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts were battered by heavy floods and rain throwing normal life out of gear. Road connectivity to over 200 villages was cut off due to overflowing of flood water on the roads. As a preliminary assessment, crops were damaged in over 1.85 lakh acres in these districts. The paddy crop in over 1.60 lakh acres was marooned in the flood water and cotton crop in over 20,000 acres. The crop loss was expected to be high in combined Guntur, West Godavari and Krishna districts, official sources added. All the major rivers including the Krishna, Godavari, Shabari, Vashista, Vainateya and Gowthami are in spate with heavy inflows. Over 20 island villages in Konaseema district including Burugulanka, Arigelavaripet, Udumudilanka, G Pedapudilanka, Ayodyalanka, Marrilanka and Anagarilanka were surrounded by flood water and the villagers were using boats to come out the villages. The vehicular traffic was suspended on Tacheru bridge as flood water overflowed on the bridge resulting in the road connectivity between Vaddadi-Chodavaram was disrupted. A control room was set up in the Collector's office in Srikakulam to receive and provide information to the affected people. Collector Swipnal Pudkar warned the fishermen not to venture into the sea for fishing. Special Chief Secretary of Disaster Management G Jayalakshmi directed the district Collectors of the affected districts to be on high alert. She held a video conference with the Collectors of 13 districts on Tuesday. She directed them to take all required steps to ensure that no untoward incident took place. The Special CS told them to take steps to evacuate people living in the low-lying areas to the relief camps, if needed. She also directed the NDRF and SDRF teams to be ready to swing into action if required. AP Disaster Management MD Prakhar Jail said that the depression crossed over South Odisha coast at Gopalpur. In Konaseema district, RDO Madhavi visited some of the flood hit areas in Mummidivaram mandal and reviewed the situation. The Srisailam dam across the river Krishna is receiving heavy inflow of 3.42 lakh cusecs and 4.04 lakh cusecs is being released to the downstream NSP project. The NS project was receiving 3.71 lakh cusecs of water and 3.98 lakh cusecs was being released to the downstream Prakasam barrage. The inflow at Prakasam barrage here was 4.01 lakh cusecs and the same was being discharged into the sea by lifting all the 70 crest gates. The river Godavari is also in spate with 8.23 lakh cusecs of inflow at the Dowleswaram projects at Rajahmundry and the same was being released into the sea. All the rivulets, streams, irrigation canals and nalas are overflowing in the coastal Andhra districts. Cloudburst and heavy rainfall cause deaths, crop loss and flooding in Maharashtra
Mumbai: Eight persons died due to a cloudburst event at Mukhed taluka in Nanded, said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday. Further, in the past 3-4 days of extreme rainfall, 12-14 lakh hectares were inundated, resulting in crop loss. The state govt has directed the BMC to issue new tenders for the desiltation of the Mithi river after the Mithi river scam that was unearthed showed the river was not being desilted, said the CM. "In case of loss of life, animals, or house collapse due to extreme rainfall, the district collector has been given powers to extend help as per the NDRF guidelines. In case of crop loss, a panchnama will need to be done for compensation," he said. In Mumbai, Fadnavis said certain places received a record rainfall of 300mm. "There has been waterlogging in some places, but it has receded now, and traffic has been restored. The suburban railway has slowed down, but it is moving. The Mithi river reached the danger level mark, and around 400-500 people were evacuated. The water level is now receding," he said. "The discharge of water has commenced, but we have requested that it should be increased. As long as the low-pressure depression in the Bay of Bengal remains, the red alert will continue," he said. On flooded roads, Fadnavis said alert warnings are being issued every three hours, but in some cases, citizens have had to step out, and the flooded roads are causing inconvenience, he said, adding that mitigation measures are being taken.
