Electrical issues, smoke detectors probed after Maryland fire kills 6, including 4 children
Maryland investigators are still looking into the cause of an intense, fast-moving fire at a home in Waldorf, in Charles County, on Sunday morning that killed six people, including four children. Master Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire confirmed the fire started on the porch. "We are looking at a variety of causes. We are looking at all electrical causes, any type of e-bikes, e-scooters, anything along those lines," Alkire told WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren on Monday. "While we did not recover any evidence of arson or incendiary act, it's something that we've got to keep open. We've got to keep our options open." Alkire said they are also still investigating whether the smoke detectors were functioning properly. "Right now, that's still currently under investigation," Alkire said. "Our investigators did determine there were smoke alarms inside the home, both on the second level, the first level, and the basement. However, we have no evidence that they actually activated." Alkire told WJZ it is possible the detectors did activate, but first responders did not hear them. "We must methodically examine every possible fire cause and contributing factor," acting State Fire Marshal Jason Mowbray said in a statement. "Determining whether smoke alarms were sounding is not always straightforward, but it is essential to understanding how and tragedies like this occur." Alkire said the Waldorf fire is one of Maryland's deadliest since 2015, when an electrical problem ignited a Christmas tree inside an Annapolis mansion and killed a tech executive, his wife, and four young grandchildren. In both that case and the Waldorf fire, the homes did not have sprinkler systems, something that is now required in new Maryland homes. "We're looking at the fire progression," Alkire said of the Waldorf fire. "Why did the fire spread so fast?" Alkire noted the home was built before the state required sprinkler systems. The fire marshal's annual report revealed that 55% of deadly fires last year were in homes without sprinklers. For decades, Baltimore City has led the state in fire-related deaths, including three children killed in a West Baltimore rowhome in 2023. In 2024, on East Lombard Street, an elderly man and two children died in a bedroom after an electrical malfunction sparked a fire. Investigators could not determine whether that home had smoke detectors. "Have an escape plan," Alkire said. "If you do have a fire, get out, stay out. Those are the messages we are constantly pushing out." In Baltimore City, if you would like a smoke detector, dial 311. The state fire marshal and local counties can also assist in providing smoke alarms. Despite these tragedies, the fire marshal's 2024 annual report shows the number of fatal fires was down 13% statewide from 2023. "We work with our partners in Baltimore City," Alkire said. "They've done a fantastic job of lowering their death rates, but there's always more work to do."

Report – Inter Milan Put Off By €70M Price Tag For Monaco Star
Inter Milan are reportedly put off by the €70 million price tag from Monaco to sign forward player Maghnes Akliouche. This according to French outlet L'Equipe, via FCInterNews. Right now, Inter Milan are still all-in on signing Ademola Lookman. However, the Nerazzurri are accepting the possibility that their pursuit of the Nigerian could fail. Inter see Lookman as a perfect opportunity to bolster their attack with a proven commodity from within Serie A. However, they will not break the bank to sign the 27-year-old. And if Inter cannot sign Lookman for what they consider a reasonable fee, they will sign a different attacker. Inter Milan Put Off €70M Monaco Asking Price For Maghnes Akliouche France's midfielder #21 Maghnes Akliouche celebrates his team's sixth goal during the U23 friendly football match between France and Dominican Republic at Mayol Stadium in Toulon, south-eastern France, on July 11, 2024, in preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The 23-year-old certainly impressed in a recent friendly match against Inter. He scored the opening goal within a minute. Therefore, it was not necessarily a surprise to see the Nerazzurri approach Monaco with an interest in signing Akliouche. According to L'Equipe, however, the price tag proved to be prohibitive. Monaco want a fee of €70 million for Akliouche. And that is more than Inter are able to spend.

Why quality non-US stocks are the 'cream of the crop'
Richard Bernstein Advisors (RBA) CEO Rich Bernstein joins Market Domination with Yahoo Finance Markets Reporter Josh Schafer and Interactive Brokers chief strategist Steve Sosnick to explain why he recommends quality non-US stocks that have been overlooked. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Domination. What are the other companies then, Rich? W- Where do you have your your eyes set on? So for me personally, I think I think the cream of the crop of the companies that are uh growing the same or better and people are ignoring would be quality stocks outside the United States. Look, let's let's set the stage here for a second. I don't think most people realize that the Euro stocks index is up about 20 something percent this year. Germany is up 30 something percent in US dollar terms versus Nasdaq up 9 to 10. Right? So the backdrop is you've already got a lot of performance going on that nobody cares about, but if you look at non-US quality, their growth rate, their anticipated growth rate is the same in some cases better than the MAG 7. They give you 10 times the dividend yield, basically 0.3 versus three, and they're selling at discounts of 30 to 50%. So Josh, the way I'd like to think about it is, if you could buy a Maserati for the price of a Chevy, wouldn't you do it? I think you probably would, and I think you'd probably ask me for two or three of them. Well, that's basically what's going on as the Maseratis are on sale. But Rick, you recently contributed to our Yahoo Finance chart book and so too did Steve Sosnick who's sitting next to me and you just hit on essentially exactly what Steve and I talked about during that project. Steve, you highlighted international stocks, right? And you you pointed out that rally. I mean, what do you make of sort of that side of the trade? Is there still more opportunity given the rally that we've seen outside of the US? Is that an area that you'd still be looking for? I would be, because for the for the reasons uh Rich just said. I mean, there there's a there are a lot of stocks that have been overlooked for years, and certainly you can't one thing you can't say about the the MAG 7 and friends is that they've been overlooked. Everybody everybody who's anywhere, thanks to um just their weights and indexes and FOMO and all these other factors, have been investing in them. So um yes, if you can if you can find these alternatives outside the US or or wherever, well, you know, even in the US, but but generally there's there's more of them outside the US. People have gotten um more tuned to that, um I think, you know, as the as the calendar turned, uh but that trade is not over yet. There there's still there's still plenty of value out there. I'm certainly not going to argue with that.
