Book Review: 'You Belong Here' speaks of the dangers of going home again
Twenty years ago, Beckett Bowery's college roommate lit a fire that killed two young men during a hazing ritual, and then seemingly vanished. Adalyn Vale's whereabouts remain a mystery in Wyatt Valley; a town divided between those connected to the elite college and the locals who know little about life behind its gates. Beckett embodied that divide — her parents were professors at the school, but she grew up as a local until deciding to enroll herself. After the fire, she was suspected of being an accomplice and forced to leave her home. Now, two decades later, her daughter, Delilah, enrolls at the school, drawing Beckett back into Wyatt Valley's web.
Miranda is an author who always writes to her strengths, but in this book, she is sticking too close to them. Her 2016 adult debut, 'All the Missing Girls,' was a rewardingly twisty take on the genre that pulled off the story being told in reverse and provided a genuinely shocking conclusion. It also introduced Miranda's signature plot device: a woman haunted by tragedy, reluctantly returning to the scene of the crime, still the subject of small-town whispers and accusations. This book feels like a recycle of that plot, and one that fails to grasp the electric undercurrent of intense female friendship Miranda usually has a knack for.
The reader never feels the magnetism of Adalyn or the emotional weight of Beckett's relationship with her, to the point where Beckett is still haunted by Adalyn's absence two decades later. More time spent in the past with their friendship and its effect on Beckett's identity might explain why Adalyn's hold remains so strong.
Miranda's description of the sinister-sounding hazing tradition called 'the howling,' where co-eds are chased through the woods by their peers, adds a sense of creeping danger to both timelines of the book. However, Miranda fails to make the consequences of being caught explicit, leaving some confusion as to why Adalyn took such drastic action. If the implication is meant to be sexual violence, the story would be more powerful in addressing that and giving Adalyn's act a purpose.
Miranda's ability to establish the settings of her novels as characters is present here and remains effective. Her portrayal of icy tensions in close-knit mountain towns is comparable to Shirley Jackson's grip on the eeriness of rigid New England villages. The novel also hits a peak when exploring Beckett's anxiety over her daughter's safety in Wyatt Valley, and her fear of Delilah being harmed in retribution for her own suspected guilt.
The revelations in the last third of the book are rushed, hollow attempts at twists and lessen the impact of an ending that struck a genuinely poignant, tragic note. Miranda is a genuinely compelling thriller writer, but my hope is that she breaks her traditions and tries something new with the next book she writes.

'Hamilton' producer reflects on 10-year anniversary
Ten years later, history still has its eyes on 'Hamilton.' The beloved musical, created by original star Lin-Manuel Miranda, celebrates a decade on Broadway this week. Producer Jeffrey Seller is reflecting on the show's lasting influence on audiences and the theater world since its groundbreaking premiere. 9 Seller produced Lin-Manuel Miranda's hit musical 'Hamilton.' Getty Images 'I'm feeling so rewarded by 'Hamilton's' impact on people over [the past] 10 years,' Seller, 60, exclusively told The Post. 'The ways in which it has brought so many people joy, … inspiration and illumination. How much it has entertained, but also how much it has educated.' 'Hamilton' officially opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Aug. 6, 2015, following previews that began on July 13. Since then, Seller said it has reached 'well over a quarter of a million Title I high school' students. '[It] not only entertains them, but teaches them American history,' Seller said. 'Not only teaches them American history, but gives them a sense of place — 'Oh, I belong here too. I'm part of the story.'' 9 More than 4.6 million people have seen 'Hamilton' on Broadway. NY Post Brian Zak 9 The original Broadway cast of 'Hamilton' included Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr. and Anthony Ramos. Getty Images According to Broadway World, more than 4.6 million people have seen 'Hamilton' on Broadway — not including those the musical has reached through its filmed version on Disney+, which earned 'Hamilton' an Emmy for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) in 2021. In June 2020, Forbes reported that the production had surpassed $1 billion in global revenue, making it one of the few to reach the milestone. The achievement helped land Miranda, 45, on the list of the world's highest-paid celebrities, with estimated earnings of $45.5 million that year. 'Hamilton' also dominated the 2016 Tony Awards, winning 11 out of its record-setting 16 nominations, including best musical and best original score. 9 Seller described 'Hamilton' as a 'strike of lightning.' Kevin Mazur The original Broadway cast included Miranda, who also wrote the show's book and score, as Alexander Hamilton; Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr; and Anthony Ramos as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton. This fall, Odom, 43, is set to reprise his role for the first time since departing the production in 2016. According to ticket-selling platforms like Broadway Direct and TodayTix, Odom's entire run — from Sept. 9 to Nov. 26 — is completely sold out. Before tickets were snagged, prices ranged from $205 to $624, not including fees. Miranda, for his part, is also known for creating and starring in 2008's 'In the Heights,' another Broadway hit produced by Seller that also earned Tonys for best musical and best original score. 9 'Hamilton' began as a concept album about the life of Treasure Secretary Alexander Hamilton. AP 9 'Hamilton' premiered off-Broadway at The Public Theater on Feb. 17, 2015. Getty Images Reflecting on 'Hamilton's' early days, Seller said it felt like 'if 'In the Heights' was this warm embrace, 'Hamilton' was this strike of lighting.'' 'It was absolutely Lin, but it was also another leap forward for him creatively,' Seller explained. 'I remember I was just so blown away by the first three songs: 'Alexander Hamilton,' 'My Shot' and, maybe, Washington's first song ('Right Hand Man').' 'I just said, 'What do you want to do?'' he continued. 'At first, he wanted to make an album. I said, 'So we'll help you make an album… I'm here to serve.'' 9 'Hamilton' won best musical and best original score at the 2016 Tony Awards. Bloomberg via Getty Images 9 'Hamilton' canceled its 2026 run at the Kennedy Center. In fact, in 2009, Miranda introduced 'Hamilton' as a concept album during an appearance at the White House for an evening of poetry, music and the spoken word under the Obama administration. 'I'm thrilled the White House called me tonight because I'm actually working on a hip-hop album,' he said at the time. 'It's a concept album about the life of someone I think embodies hip-hop, Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton.' Miranda then performed an early version of what would become 'Hamilton's' opening number, aptly titled 'Alexander Hamilton.' 9 Lin-Manuel Miranda's final performance as Alexander Hamilton in 2016. Getty Images Before transferring to Broadway, the off-Broadway production of 'Hamilton' premiered at The Public Theater on Feb. 17, 2015. Despite its success over the past 10 years, Seller said he thinks it's still too early to know what the show's legacy will be. ''Legacy' is a hard word because we don't know,' he explained. 'I think we're still too close to see what its legacy is.' In addition to 'Hamilton,' Seller's other producing credits include 'Rent,' 'Avenue Q,' the 2009 revival of 'West Side Story' and, most recently, the 2023 revival of 'Sweeney Todd.' He chronicled his journey from growing up in Detroit to becoming an award-winning producer in his book, 'Theater Kid: A Broadway Memoir,' published on May 6. Meanwhile, 'Hamilton' continues its reach beyond Broadway with multiple North American tours, as well as productions in London's West End, Australia, the UK and Ireland.

12 Questions I Need Answered In "The Devil Wears Prada 2"
Last month, production began on The Devil Wears Prada 2. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, and Tracy Thomas are reprising their roles as Miranda, Andy, Nigel, Emily, and Lily, respectively, and Kenneth Branagh, B.J. Novak, Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, Justin Thoreaux, and Pauline Chalamet are but a few of the newcomers joining the cast. The film is slated for a May 1, 2026 release and I, personally, need answers to the following questions and closure on the following story lines: Where did Andy go after Runway? The Devil Wears Prada ended with Andy interviewing for a new role at The New York Mirror — which Miranda gave her a glowing* review for — so I can't wait to see what Andy's made of her career. *Miranda said that Andy was her greatest disappointment and also that the EIC would be an idiot not to hire her — when it comes to Miranda, you can't get shinier than that! What's Miranda up to? We don't have many details regarding the plot of TDWP 2, so I am curious as to how and why Andy and Miranda's paths come to cross again 20+ years later. Where do things stand with Nate and Christian? As of today, neither Adrian Grenier (Nate) nor Simon Baker (Christian) are confirmed to return for the sequel, so what does that mean for Andy and her paramours? Last we saw, Andy left things open with Nate — who got a job in Boston as a sous-chef — after leaving Simon high and dry in Paris, so I'm curious to understand what happened between them! Follow up for Nate specifically: Has he made any upgrades or modifications to his grilled cheese recipe? Or is he sticking by his $8 worth of Jarlsberg (adjusted for inflation)? Did Miranda ever make it up to Nigel after she gave Jacqueline his job? In TDWP, Nigel was supposed to join forces with fashion designer James Holt (Daniel Sunjata) as his creative director. However, in a ploy to keep her job as editor-in-chief of Runway, Miranda maneuvered things so that Jacqueline would get the job instead of Nigel. That man deserves every flower available in the flower shop! After Andy left Runway, did she keep in touch with Nigel or Emily? The film ended with Andy bestowing her Parisian wardrobe to Emily and Emily telling the new assistant that she "has big shoes to fill." Did they remain friends (if that was even what they really were)? Did anyone develop better work/life balance? The 2000s were very different from the 2020s — you can be successful at work AND have a semblance of a social life. Did Andy's better friends? They all SUCKED in TDWP — they belittled her job and made her feel bad about wanting to work in fashion, so I hope for Andy's sake that they became better I hope she dumped them all and took all her products and freebies with her! How does Miranda feel about the rise of social media, influencers, and the overall accessibility of fashion? Let us not forget Miranda's iconic "cerulean" monologue — but those were the old times, when fashion and trends were gatekept and made by those at the top rather than the ubiquitous nature that they are now. Can't wait to see Miranda's reactions to popular TikTok trends. Did it ever come out that two random girls from NYC got to read Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows before it came out? Like, if I were them, I would have told EVERYONE that Harry was the last horcrux. Will there be another iconic fashion montage? This scene truly altered my brain chemistry. Last, but not least, DOES ANDY STILL HAVE THE CHANEL BOOTS? Those would be a family heirloom in my household. Sadly, none of these will be answered until next year (HOPEFULLY), so, until then, I shall wait with bated breath. In the meantime, watch the original The Devil Wears Prada on Hulu or Disney+ now.

And Just Like That…: Here's What We Want to See for Each Character Before the Show Ends
Pour us another round of cosmos, because we're preparing ourselves to say goodbye to the ladies of And Just Like That. HBO Max's Sex and the City sequel series is officially ending after three seasons — which means we only have two episodes left with Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and the rest of the gang. (The series finale airs Thursday, Aug. 14 at 9/8c.) And there are plenty of loose plot threads still hanging out there, so showrunner Michael Patrick King and the writers will have to work hard to come up with a pair of final episodes that will wrap everything up in a nice, chic bow. More from TVLine Sarah Jessica Parker and Her Co-Stars Offer Emotional Tributes as And Just Like That Reveals End Date And Just Like That... Shocker: Sex and the City Revival to End With Season 3 at HBO Max And Just Like That: Carrie Gets Closer to Duncan - But Is It Too Close? So we here at TVLine thought we'd do some of the heavy lifting for them. (As longtime Sex and the City fans, we feel certain we're qualified.) Below, we've laid out exactly what we need to see from each major character on And Just Like That before the curtain falls for good — and that includes the return of a few familiar faces from the past. Read on to see our wish list for And Just Like That's farewell, and then hit the comments to tell us what you want to see in the final two episodes. Carrie She already said goodbye to Aidan, so we don't have to worry about her making that mistake again. And she does have solid chemistry with her fellow writer Duncan. We're most excited, though, about her new journey as a novelist. So we'd love it if Carrie's new book became a sensation and took her to London, where she could cozy up with Duncan — and also reunite with a certain someone… Samantha Hello, fabulous! The fact that Duncan lives in London gives And Just Like That the perfect excuse to bring back fellow London resident Samantha for a much-needed reunion. It just wasn't the same without Samantha Jones around, and a Kim Cattrall cameo in the finale (however brief) would help it feel like a proper send-off — not just to this show but to Sex and the City, too. Miranda We've been liking her low-key romance with Joy so far — a lot more than her volatile hook-up with Che, anyway — and we wouldn't mind seeing those two get a happy ending. But we still have a soft spot for Steve: It'd be nice to see him and Miranda mend fences and spend some time together with Brady as a family before And Just Like That signs off for good. (And no, yelling at Brady for getting a girl pregnant doesn't count.) Charlotte Yes, we're happy her husband Harry is cancer-free, and Charlotte seems content balancing her work at the art gallery with her life at home being a mom. But mostly, we want to see Charlotte step into the spotlight a little more in the final two episodes and push for her own happiness, rather than just being a dutiful housewife or a supportive shoulder for Carrie to cry on. This woman has feelings, too! We've known that since way back in the Sex and the City days, and we'd like to see a little of that old sparkle again. Seema Seema is the most compelling new character And Just Like That gave us, so it's a shame that we have to say goodbye to her so soon. But we're enjoying the unlikely romance she's having with landscaper Adam, and we'd love to see that love, um, bloom in the final two episodes. Plus, she needs to sign a big client and get her new firm on track. Lisa Michelle Obama needs to show up and make a cameo in the final two episodes, if only to justify all the talk about her being a part of Lisa's long-gestating documentary. And no, we don't need to see Lisa have a fling with her editor Marion. She's too dedicated to her family to do anything that impulsive. Anthony He already has his happily-ever-after all sewn up with that Italian stallion Giuseppe, so we just need mom Patti LuPone's approval to seal the deal. But it would be nice to see the show acknowledge his ex (and Carrie's bestie) Stanford, played by the late Willie Garson, one more time before it signs off. Nya Hey, remember her? After two seasons as Miranda's professor pal, Nya dropped off the radar completely in Season 3, so we'd love to see her at least pop in to say hi and get some closure in the final two episodes. Che And as for seeing Miranda's regrettable ex again? Nah, we're good. Let us know what you want to see in the final two episodes with a comment below!
