Chhattisgarh girl who battled cancer is Class 10 board examination topper
Ishika Bala, a student of Government Higher Secondary School in Gundahur village, Kanker district, secured 99.17% in the Class 10 exam conducted by the Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education (CGBSE). She shares the top position with Naman Kumar Khuntia from Swami Atmanand Government Utkrisht English Medium School in Jashpur district.
'At times, I thought I wouldn't be able to study further. But I didn't give up. It is important to have confidence in yourself,' Ishika, who hails from a village in Pakhanjore area of Kanker, a Maoist-affected area, told reporters.
In November 2023, she was diagnosed with blood cancer while preparing for her Class 10 board exam. Her family said she had to skip the board exam last year due to her illness and underwent treatment at Balco Medical Centre in Nava Raipur.
'I want to pursue engineering and will opt for Maths in the next class. My ultimate goal is to become an IAS officer,' Ishika told reporters with her voice reflecting quiet determination.
'She defeated cancer with her willpower and courage,' said her father, Shankar Bala, a farmer.
' Our entire family supported her through the treatment and motivated her to continue her studies. Her hard work has paid off,' he said.
Shankar said he would ensure the best possible education for his five children despite financial constraints.

Nutritious food distributed to cancer patients
Nellore: Jana Sena Party district general secretary and Nellore city observer Kishore Gunukula and other leaders distributed nutritious food to about 100 cancer patients from poor financial background, at Abiding Hope Church, Kondaiyapalem Gate Centre and Nellore Rural on Saturday. Social worker Titus Nirmal Kumar, who organised the distribution, has been supplying nutritious food to HIV-affected children for the past several years. Now, he started providing monthly nutritional food to poor cancer patients. Speaking on the occasion, JSP leader Kishore criticised that they previous YSRCP government had stopped providing medicines to cancer patients. He announced that public grievances would be accepted every Wednesday and Saturday during Janavani programme at party office in Gomati Nagar.

National Health Mission employees threaten indefinite strike from Aug 19
Pune: National Health Mission (NHM) employees under zilla parishad Pune have threatened to go on an indefinite strike from Aug 19, demanding among others regularisation of contractual staff, a 15% honorarium hike, group insurance, and implementation of a transfer policy. A statement issued by State NHM Officers and Employees United Committee, Maharashtra, on Monday said that the govt resolution issued on March 14, 2024, mandated regularisation of employees with more than 10 years of service. However, there has been no action in this regard even after 17 months, it said. Their 20-point charter of demands also include loyalty bonus, EPF coverage, gratuity benefits, ₹50 lakh ex-gratia for accidental death, and ₹25 lakh for permanent disability, along with medical assistance between ₹2 and ₹5 lakh in case of accidents on duty. The union has warned that if the health department does not hold an immediate meeting to discuss these demands, the strike will intensify. Second phase of deworming tablet distribution commenced
Nanguneri MLA Ruby R. Manoharan inaugurated on Monday the second phase of the distribution of deworming tablets to students in connection with the 'National Deworming Day'. Since the deworming tablets are being distributed to children twice a year – in February and August – Mr. Manoharan distributed the 400 mg albendazole tablets to the students of Government Higher Secondary School at Reddiyarpatti on Palayamkottai outskirts on Monday. 'The tablets will be distributed to students on August 11 and 18. The children left out on August 11 will get the tablets on August 18,' Mr. Manoharan said. A total of 4,11,683 persons between the age of 1 and 19 and 1,08,893 women in the age between 20 and 30 will be given this tablet in Tirunelveli district to protect them from anaemia and strengthen immunity. Tenkasi District Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore inaugurated the deworming tablet distribution at Manjammal Government Higher Secondary School. In Tenkasi district, the tablet will be distributed to 3,08,483 children between the age of 1 and 19 and 68,595 women between the age of 20 and 30.
