British cyclist suddenly dies during race after falling off bike in horror incident

Daily Mirror26-04-2025

A British cyclist has died during a race in Majorca. The 40-year-old was one of the participants in the Mallorca 312 event, a famous amateur road race which runs around the island and finishes in Playa de Muro.
The tragedy occurred this morning. The victim is said to have fallen off his bike and gone into cardiac arrest, on the road between Esporles and Valldemossa.
Medical responders tried to revive him and he was taken by ambulance to the island capital Palma.
He died before arriving at the Rotger Clinic where he was being transferred to.
An investigation into the incident, led by the Civil Guard, has been launched.
Event organisers said in a statement: 'We want to transfer our most sincere condolences to the man's family and loved ones.'
An Irish cyclist died on the island earlier this month.
The 59-year-old is said to have come off his bike after 'collapsing' on a road in Pollensa in the north of the holiday island.
He was on the Ma-2210 road linking the popular Port de Pollensa resort to the Formentor Lighthouse.
The alarm was raised just after 4pm on April 9.
Paramedics tried to revive him after reaching the scene but there was nothing they could do to save him.
Scots tourist Graeme McGilvray, 49, from Glasgow, died in March 2016 on a roundabout on a busy road between Alcudia and Port Alcudia after being knocked off his bike by a lorry.
In September 2023 a 45-year-old British cyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a lorry on the island.
He fell more than 30ft down an embankment at the side of the road after being run over.
Emergency responders reported at the time he had suffered 'very serious' head, chest and stomach injuries when they attended him at the scene before rushing him to hospital.
That incident happened near Caimiri, a small inland town in Majorca at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains which is famous for its olives.

Starmer agrees to grooming gangs inquiry

This evening, Keir Starmer has announced he does want a national inquiry on grooming gangs after all. The Prime Minister had tasked Baroness Casey to conduct a rapid review of the evidence available on the scale of these crimes committed by gangs – and her review is expected to conclude on Monday that there needs to be a full public inquiry. Starmer said today that Casey had also changed her mind on whether such an investigation was necessary, arguing: 'She's come to the view there should be a national inquiry on the basis of what she's seen. I've read every single word of her report, and I'm going to accept her recommendation. I think that's the right thing to do, on the basis of what she has put in her audit. I asked her to do that job, to double-check on this.' In the months after Starmer had commissioned Casey, ministers had dropped hints that a full public inquiry might still be on the cards, saying they wanted to do the best thing that would allow them to understand the full scale of grooming gangs, and to bring both the perpetrators and those who had looked the other way to justice. That had been a significant softening of the initial adamance from Starmer and other senior government figures that putting a national inquiry on a statutory footing would in fact slow down justice and accountability. The reality is that whatever the format of an inquiry – whether locally focused, nationally focused, non-statutory, statutory, long-running or rapid – it is perfectly possible, in fact totally normal, for justice not to be served, and for the lessons that everyone fervently promises at the outset to learn to remain merely proposals. Nigel Farage pointed to this in his response when he said: 'A full statutory enquiry, done correctly, will expose the multiple failings of the British establishment. I repeat the words 'done correctly'– this cannot be a whitewash.' 'Whitewash' is a popular political word, but even truly revelatory inquiries can still quite easily be ignored by the establishment – or, if not ignored, then implemented so slowly that similar scandals end up occurring in the meantime. Starmer's U-turn is politically significant, particularly given it is another example of the government responding to pressure from Reform. But in policy terms it is still largely meaningless.

Scots cops sent to Northern Ireland as police officers injured in fireworks riots

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said the Scots cops in question are "trained to work in our environment". Police Scotland officers have been deployed to Northern Ireland as a fifth consecutive night of riots saw more police officers injured in the disturbances. Heavy masonry and fireworks were thrown during disorder on Friday night. And Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones has said the Scots officers in question are equipped to deal with the challenges they'll face. ‌ The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officer said: "It is important to know over the remainder of this weekend the public will continue to see a large policing presence across Northern Ireland to reassure our communities and protect our streets. This will include the deployment of mutual aid resources from Scotland. ‌ "These officers, trained to work in our environment, will be working side by side with their PSNI colleagues. We repeat, once more, our appeal for calm across Northern Ireland in the coming days." And a senior officer has warned that the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is actively investigating people inciting the disorder through social media. The scenes on Friday night in Portadown were the fifth consecutive night of rioting in the region after serious disturbances in Ballymena on Monday. The violence, which followed an alleged sex attack on a teenage girl in the Co Antrim town, has since spread to several other parts of Northern Ireland. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! On Saturday afternoon, hundreds of people attended a rally in Belfast city centre which heard calls for greater political leadership in opposing racism. More than 60 police officers have been hurt during the rioting. A PSNI spokesperson said: "Disorder and violence broke out in Portadown with officers coming under sustained attack with heavy masonry and fireworks thrown at them. "Officers used various public order tactics including water cannon to keep the public safe with no reports of injury to the public or damage to property." Two males, aged 14 and 20, were arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour and remain in custody. Police in Londonderry dealt with disorder in the Tullyally area. A police vehicle was damaged, with the front window smashed. One male was arrested at around 2.20am and remains in custody. Damage was caused to playing fields and property in the Killeavey Road area of Newry as a large group set a pitch and bins on fire. One 14-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of riot. Stones were thrown at the windows of a hotel in the Newtownabbey area. ‌ A car was also set on fire in the Hesketh Gardens area of Belfast, which police are treating as a racially motivated crime. The disorder started in Ballymena on Monday after an alleged sexual assault of a girl in the town last weekend. Two 14-year-old boys, who spoke to a court through a Romanian interpreter, have been charged with attempted rape. A peaceful protest about the alleged assault on Monday evening was followed by attacks on properties housing ethnic minorities and police. The PSNI described the scenes as "racist thuggery". Assistant Chief Constable Jones added: "It's deeply disturbing to see such young members of our communities involved in and in some areas driving criminal activity like this. ‌ "I would appeal directly to parents and guardians to speak to your children about the impact their behaviour is having on the safety of our local communities and the impact this could have on their lives if arrested, charged and prosecuted. We continue to have a heightened presence in our local communities to de-escalate violence. "We are making arrests and will continue to make public appeals with photos of suspects. Do you want your child, family member or friend directly associated with this disorder in this way? These actions are not without serious consequence. I am so grateful to our frontline officers who continue to put themselves at risk in protecting everyone from this hate-motivated criminality." Ms Jones added: "To those posting hate on social media, inciting disorder or being seen to commit disorder, we are actively investigating what you have said and what you have been captured doing. We have an ongoing physical and online presence. We have already released images of four individuals we want to identify and interview in connection with our ongoing investigation." The officer added: "In releasing these images, I am asking the wider community to step forward and help us. It is in all of our interests, and in the interests of justice, that those responsible are dealt with and I would urge anyone who may have information to bring it forward."
