Tamil Nadu gives sanctuary to Greater Flamingos at Dhanushkodi
CHENNAI: The state government notified the establishment of the Greater Flamingo Sanctuary at Dhanushkodi in Ramanathapuram on 524.78 hectares of land on the occasion of World Environment Day on Thursday.
This apart, the state forest department also reinforced its workforce with a major recruitment drive and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) certified industries under the Voluntary Green Rating of Industries initiative, a first-of-its-kind.
Marking the occasion, Chief Minister MK Stalin handed over the appointment letters along with the rating certificates to the industries. He also pledged his commitment to protecting the environment.
Speaking at the event, Stalin said, 'Biodiversity and climate change are deeply interconnected. Tamil Nadu is leading the way as a state that not only understands this relationship but is also taking proactive steps in response.'
'We aspire not merely to achieve a US $1 trillion economy, but to ensure that it is environmentally sustainable. In driving this shift, we are empowering our young people with the skills and platforms they need,' he added.
The Greater Flamingo Sanctuary, located within the ecologically sensitive Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve, is a critical stopover along the Central Asian Flyway. This region supports 128 bird species, including Greater and Lesser Flamingos. The area features diverse ecosystems – sand dunes, marshes, and mangrove forests like Avicennia and Rhizophora, which stabilise the coastline and provide habitats for marine life, including fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and nesting sea turtles. The notification issued by additional chief secretary Supriya Sahu aims to safeguard this biodiversity hotspot and promote responsible tourism, benefiting local communities in Ramanathapuram.

Trichy arterial roads damaged for water project remain unmotorable
Trichy: With the ongoing traffic diversions for reconstruction work of two railway overbridges (RoBs) making a negative impact on vehicular movement in Trichy, prominent roads dug for installing 24X7 drinking water pipelines have made traffic situation go from bad to worse. Trichy corporation has been installing water pipelines in seven major residential and commercial areas for the project at 38.4 crore. Melapudur Main Road near Palakkarai, Williams Road and Warners Road at Cantonment, Collector Office Road at Periyamilagupaarai and Heber Road were dug up for work. While the pipeline installation work was completed a couple of weeks ago, residents said the damaged roads were not repaired. Vehicles are not using uneven parts of the roads which were dug up and closed, reducing motorable area on roads and resulting in traffic bottlenecks. Besides, city buses which make stops on such roads further choke the vehicular movement. "Summer showers are over, and the weather remains dry for the past few weeks. The local body should at least repair the damaged portions and make the roads even and motorable," S Shabeer Ahmed, a resident of Khajamalai, said. During the recent visit of chief minister M K Stalin for the inauguration of the integrated bus terminus in Panjapur, maintenance work was carried out on roads in Puthur and Thennur, while similar work was not taken up in other parts of the city. Corporation officials said that levelling and patchwork will be carried out on Williams Road soon. However, as the Melapudur Main Road is managed by the state highway department, patchwork is likely to take some time. Officials added that around 115km long roads in all five zones that were damaged for the underground drainage (UGD) and drinking water projects will be relaid at an outlay of 80 crore in two phases within Oct.
