Exeter hope to add more attacking talent

BBC News21-07-2025
Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell says he is still hoping to add some more attacking options to his squad before the season starts. Caldwell has already brought in Reading forward Jayden Wareham on a permanent deal, while teenager Kieran Wilson signed his first professional contract and has featured in pre-season. City have also kept the bulk of their attacking talent from last season, such as Sonny Cox, Josh Magennis and Jack Aitchison."We're always looking to strengthen," Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon after his side's 4-1 pre-season win at FC United of Manchester. "We have one loan space still still available that we'll look to bring in, hopefully before the start of the season - we're still looking for two or three others on top of that."Probably the attacking areas to give us a bit more speed and threat and areas higher up the pitch would be an area I think we can get better."
On-loan Brentford youngster Ethan Brierley scored one and supplied an assist for another goal in the win at FC United. The 21-year-old has joined the Grecians on a season-long deal and Caldwell has been impressed with what he has seen so far from him."It's great for any player that's coming into a new club to get a goal and to get an assist because I think that builds confidence," he said."I think you can see the quality that he has."We've got a great relationship with Brentford and he's a player we've watched for a number of years and I think now is the time for him to go and show how good a player he is at League One level."

Bayern v Tottenham live: Spurs face latest Kane reunion in friendly after massive injury blow

Tottenham Hotspur ramp up preparations for the new Premier League campaign with a pre-season friendly against former striker and club legend Harry Kane 's Bayern Munich. Spurs are building momentum under new manager Thomas Frank, with Burnley at home to open up the campaign next Saturday. Frank suffered a major blow when James Maddison went down in a friendly against Newcastle in Seoul, with tests confirming an ACL injury, which will likely keep him out for more than six months. Spurs have also waved goodbye to another club legend in Son Heung Min, who has joined LAFC in a record-breaking MLS move. Chairman Daniel Levy hailed Frank's ability on Gary Neville's ' The Overlap', stating: 'Thomas is a highly intelligent individual, a fantastic way about him in terms of communication. He gets the style of football we want to play.' Thomas Frank outlines Spurs ambitions "I'm very clear on the principles on every phase of the game. I want us to be brave and very aggressive. I also want to attack," Frank says. "Brave is absolutely linked [with] 'To dare is to do'. If you are not brave, it is difficult to achieve anything. Brave is crucial. The aggressivity is crucial if you want to win or achieve something. And you need to attack." Tottenham Hotspur travel to Germany to face Bayern Munich in their final friendly of pre-season today, as Thomas Frank puts his finishing touches on preparations for the 2025/26 season. The Dane has enjoyed a mixed start to life at his new club, with the signing of Mohammed Kudus followed by controversy over Morgan Gibbs-White and then a lack of notable activity in the market. However, his results in pre-season have produced positive performances, and today is the last match before the season 'begins' with the Uefa Super Cup match against PSG in Udine next week. While the Super Cup remains a friendly of sorts, it still marks a chance for another trophy and the perfect start for Frank, with the Dane looking to hit the ground running in the Premier League too come 16 August. Benjamin Sesko snubs Newcastle with fee agreed for Man United move

Manchester United have agreed a £66.5m fee with RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian striker, who could cost up to £73.7m if add-ons are triggered, is set to become Ruben Amorim 's third major signing this summer and to take his spending in the transfer window to over £200m. But, with Sesko preferring to join Manchester United after Newcastle United also made a bid for him, it represents another blow for Eddie Howe in the Magpies' troubled summer. Newcastle have also failed in their attempts to sign Hugo Ekitike, who went to Liverpool, Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, who chose Chelsea, and Bryan Mbeumo, who opted for United. Sesko will join the £71m Mbeumo and the £62.5m buy Matheus Cunha in Amorim's remodelled attack as he looks to make United more prolific. The 22-year-old, who scored 21 goals for RB Leipzig last season, is expected to agree personal terms to move to Old Trafford. Sesko was also on Arsenal's shortlist for a centre-forward this summer before they decided to buy Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting instead. United made Sesko their main striking target after also considering Ollie Watkins, who has Premier League experience with Aston Villa but is seven years older. United's two main centre-forwards last season, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, scored just seven Premier League goals between them as the team mustered only 44.

How McTominay became Ballon d'Or nominee

Italian champion. Serie A player of the year. Idolised by one of football's most passionate fanbases. And now a Ballon d'Or the past year has been a dream for Scott McTominay he would not want to wake 28-year-old Napoli and Scotland midfielder's place on the 30-man shortlist for the world's best player was confirmed 347 days after his last game for Manchester was as a substitute. Away to Brighton. In a 2-1 while his boyhood club United toiled to a 15th-place finish, McTominay was living the dream in Naples, after moving for a bargain £25.7m fee on 30 finished the season with 12 league goals, Napoli won the league and McTominay was named Serie A's MVP (most valuable player). And like something from a film script, it was McTominay's spectacular scissor kick against Cagliari on the last day of the season that sent Napoli on their way to winning the title.A far cry from the player who would probably have been called solid but unspectacular at Manchester how has he become one of the top 30 footballers in the world? Conte turns McTominay into a 'raider' McTominay has clearly flourished at Napoli. But the change that enabled all this was a tactical decision by Antonio Manchester United he was usually a defensive midfielder - a "water carrier", to quote BBC pundit Pat Scotland even used him at centre-back for a while before Steve Clarke started playing him in an attacking midfield if it was good enough for Clarke, it was seemingly good enough for choice paid dividends as McTominay scored 12 goals in 34 Serie A games for Napoli, the joint top-scoring midfielder in the contrast he had only scored 19 goals in 178 Premier League games for May journalist Vincenzo Credendino told BBC Sport: "In the system of Conte he's not a builder, he's a raider - the best option while you have a number nine like Romelu Lukaku."McTominay ranked near the top for midfielders to touch the ball in the opposition penalty area, and for duels won in Serie added: "You can compare McTominay with the big midfielders of Conte's history. In his first years at Juventus - 2011-12 and 2012-13 - Claudio Marchisio and Arturo Vidal scored nine and 10 goals respectively."It's not a coincidence. McTominay is perfect for Conte, as Conte is perfect for McTominay." Why did McTominay flourish in Naples? Aside from the football, McTominay - who qualifies for Scotland through his father - is loving life on and off the in Lancaster in north-west England, he joined Manchester United as a last year he decided to stand on his own two feet after 255 appearances for about living abroad, he told BBC Radio 5 Live recently: "It gives you more mental strength."I've always lived very close to my mum, so I could go whenever I wanted."Now I live 1,500 miles away so I can't just go home and see my mum, my family, my sister and my kids so it's different, but in life you sometimes have to take yourself out of your comfort zone and I've always prided myself on that. "I would never want to be in my comfort zone, and if I can go away anywhere and establish myself and do well, why not? Who's to stop me doing that?"Having his friend and Scotland team-mate Billy Gilmour helps. The midfielder joined Napoli on the same day as McTominay from Brighton."It's different, a totally different way of life over there - the way you eat, the way you live and all that," continued McTominay."I've been lucky that I have one of my good friends there in Billy Gilmour and he's been great with me. We've helped each other out along the way and drive each other in different things. "It's been great, and I'm someone in life who just wants to take it head-on. I just want to go out and give it my absolute best - the different culture and language and have a great time." Why do Napoli fans love McTominay? Napoli is a club whose legends are idolised in a way not always seen elsewhere - most notably Diego season's success was only the fourth Serie A title in Napoli's history - and McTominay became the face of Conte's image was painted on to a city centre Ciro's restaurant in Edinburgh have a Scotland flag bearing with the words 'Napoli. McTominay. Pizza. In that order.'Ciro Sartore, who co-owns the restaurant with his brother Santo, said: "Napoli fans love when a player commits to the city, and him kissing the Napoli badge shows how much the love and appreciation means to him. Obviously, scoring a lot of goals helps too."Fans got tattoos of him, with one on a supporter's leg - using his nickname McFratm (basically McBro) - went they settled on that one - and he says it is his favourite - he was also called McTerminator, MacGyver and apribottiglie (the bottle opener)."The people in Naples are incredible," said McTominay recently."They're so passionate and everywhere you go there are people who say 'Forza Napoli' and they want to speak to you and have a conversation. That inspires you every time you go on the pitch because they care. "Every time we go on the pitch it's inspiring and we want to push ourselves to go out and win."Journalist Credendino added: "He is the symbol of the attitude of this Napoli, with his intensity and sacrifice in every game."
