0G Launches WaveHack Buildathon for AI Developers on AKINDO With $50,000 Grant

0G Launches WaveHack Buildathon for AI Developers on AKINDO With $50,000 Grant

Business Insider9 hours ago
Decentralized Layer 1 network 0G has announced the launch of a free buildathon in collaboration with AKINDO. 0G's WaveHack kicks off on August 14 with a workshop and $50,000 grant pool to incentivize the development of novel AI applications.
0G's WaveHack is open to developers, builders, and AI innovators creating diverse AI dapps using 0G's modular Layer 1 blockchain. The event will enable developers to create censorship-resistant and verifiable AI applications that support diverse use cases, and is set to commence on August 14 with a YouTube live event hosted by the buildathon platform AKINDO.
As the first decentralized Layer 1 blockchain for advanced AI, 0G connects hardware resources such as storage and compute with software assets, including data and models to handle AI workloads at scale. Buildathon participants will be able to utilize these resources in creating solutions during the course of WaveHack, complete with ongoing mentoring from the 0G team.
0G's Developer Relations lead, Gathin T, will welcome attendees to the virtual event on August 14 before running through the core components of the 0G tech stack. They will gain an overview of modules such as compute, storage, and data availability before being provided with practical examples of the sorts of applications that can be created. The live event will close with a Q&A, ensuring that participants have a full understanding of the tools available and the opportunities to earn a share of the $50,000 grant pool.
WaveHack is poised to live up to its name, forming six hackathon waves, each lasting for two weeks at a time. The grant allocation rises with each new wave, culminating in $13,000 being disbursed to the best teams whose submissions meet the approval of the judges in wave six. Participants are encouraged to build, iterate, and submit ideas across several cycles, with those who participate in all six waves earning a share of an additional $2,000.
Submissions will be judged according to weighted criteria that takes into account the following attributes: Working Demo & Functionality (30%); 0G Tech Stack Integration (30%); Creativity & User Experience (15%); Real Use Case & Scalability (10%); Vision & Roadmap (10%). Participants are encouraged to get creative and engineer solutions ranging from dapps to Intelligent NFTs (INFTs) and developer tools using 0G's modular infrastructure.
While developers have free rein to create any kind of onchain solution leveraging 0G's tech stack, suggested tracks include:
Onchain AI-powered chatbots or personal assistants
Decentralized social media with user-owned AI feeds
AI-powered DeFi dashboards or trading bots
Decentralized research tools with collaborative AI
NFT marketplaces where assets have dynamic, AI-generated traits
Games that use AI for NPCs, world generation, or player analytics
0G's WaveHack provides AI builders with the tools, educational resources, and mentoring to create powerful applications that merge artificial intelligence with blockchain technology. The structured design provides clear milestones and ensures that all participants will emerge from the buildathon with greater practical knowledge and deeper industry connections. The best teams will also have the opportunity to earn grant funding to help transform their ideas into reality, supporting the creation of next-generation AI dapps with real-world utility.
Developers can sign up for WaveHack here and learn more about the kickoff workshop event in conjunction with AKINDO here.

S&P Assigns First-Ever Credit Rating to a DeFi Protocol, Rates Sky at B-

S&P Global Ratings assigned a B- (stable outlook) issuer credit rating to Sky Protocol, the decentralized lending platform formerly known as Maker Protocol, in a first for the decentralized finance (DeFi) industry. The Ethereum-based protocol issues the USDS stablecoin, created when borrowers post approved collateral. With a $7.1 billion market cap, USDS trails only USDT and USDC in size. Sky also offers savings vaults, enabling holders to earn yield via savings USDS (sUSDS). Jonathan Manley, S&P's global head of market outreach, called the rating a 'significant milestone' that will help bring greater transparency to DeFi. The move comes as S&P expands its coverage into blockchain-based finance, recently rating tokenized treasury funds and blockchain mortgage securitizations. Sky is itself an investor in Janus Henderson's tokenized treasury products. S&P's separate Stablecoin Stability Assessment rates USDS's peg-maintenance ability at 4 (constrained) on a five-point scale. The rating underscores growing overlap between traditional credit analysis and the evolving DeFi market.

YouTube to test AI-powered age verification system for US users

YouTube on Wednesday will begin testing a new age-verification system in the U.S. that relies on artificial intelligence to differentiate between adults and minors, based on the kinds of videos that they have been watching. The tests initially will only affect a sliver of YouTube's audience in the U.S., but it will likely become more pervasive if the system works as well at guessing viewers' ages as it does in other parts of the world. The system will only work when viewers are logged into their accounts, and it will make its age assessments regardless of the birth date a user might have entered upon signing up. If the system flags a logged-in viewer as being under 18, YouTube will impose the normal controls and restrictions that the site already uses as a way to prevent minors from watching videos and engaging in other behavior deemed inappropriate for that age. The new system will only work if viewers are logged into their accounts. AP The safeguards include reminders to take a break from the screen, privacy warnings and restrictions on video recommendations. YouTube, which has been owned by Google for nearly 20 years, also doesn't show ads tailored to individual tastes if a viewer is under 18. If the system has inaccurately called out a viewer as a minor, the mistake can be corrected by showing YouTube a government-issued identification card, a credit card or a selfie. 'YouTube was one of the first platforms to offer experiences designed specifically for young people, and we're proud to again be at the forefront of introducing technology that allows us to deliver safety protections while preserving teen privacy,' James Beser, the video service's director of product management, wrote in a blog post about the age-verification system. People still will be able to watch YouTube videos without logging into an account, but viewing that way triggers an automatic block on some content without proof of age. If a viewer is mistakenly called a minor, they can correct it by showing YouTube a government-issued ID, credit card, or a selfie. fizkes – The political pressure has been building on websites to do a better job of verifying ages to shield children from inappropriate content since late June when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Texas law aimed at preventing minors from watching pornography online. While some services, such as YouTube, have been stepping up their efforts to verify users' ages, others have contended that the responsibility should primarily fall upon the two main smartphone app stores run by Apple and Google — a position that those two technology powerhouses have resisted. Some digital rights groups, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Center for Democracy & Technology, have raised concerns that age verification could infringe on personal privacy and violate First Amendment protections on free speech.
