KPKM proposes short-term agriculture censuses for better policy coordination
KPKM secretary-general Datuk Seri Isham Ishak highlighted the importance of frequent data collection following the findings of the 2024 Agriculture Census, which provides detailed insights at both national and district levels.
'We have discussed with DOSM how future censuses can be implemented. For federal-level policymaking, we need long-term statistics over five to 10 years. However, for state and district-level execution, data must be refreshed more often. Smaller-scale censuses would be cost-effective,' he said during a press conference.
The 2024 census offers granular data on farming demographics, crop types, land ownership, and mechanisation adoption. 'We now have hyperlocal data. In Senaling, Kuala Pilah, for instance, we know the number of farmers, their crops, and production levels. This helps state governments and village leaders make informed decisions to boost yields,' Isham explained.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof previously announced that short-term agricultural surveys would begin in 2026 to enhance sector monitoring.
Additionally, KPKM plans to introduce a cooperative-based farm management model to consolidate smallholders and landowners, improving productivity through collective government assistance. 'With over 220,000 padi farmers nationwide averaging two hectares each, grouping them could enhance efficiency and income,' Isham noted.
The success of this model depends on accurate data and strong federal-state collaboration with local farming communities. - Bernama

Federation of Livestock Farmers Associations of Malaysia deputy president Lee Yoon Yeau said the grades would likely be in the D and E range, but this had yet to be fixed. 'We had discussions before the subsidy removal for affordable eggs. The government asked the industry and farmers to produce a special grade egg for the B40 group. 'The special D and E grades will be sold at lower and affordable prices in supermarkets that will be determined by the government under certain promotions or programmes, like the Bantuan Rahmah or MyKasih,' he said. Lee said the federation was willing to comply with the government's request to roll out the affordable eggs. On the difference between grades A, B, C and D eggs, he said it had to do with weight which ranged from 45g to 70g. Grade A to B could weigh between 55g and 70g while the affordable ones could be between 45g and 50g. For the bigger Omega variety, Lee said these were higher priced as special feed was used to produce it. Lee was commenting on the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry's announcement on Thursday that a new grade of chicken eggs will be introduced to ensure supply security and price stability. It said industry players had agreed to this, revealing that the Special Grade Eggs will be offered at a more affordable price. The ministry said the public can also purchase chicken eggs at competitive prices through the Agro Madani Sales and Rahmah Sales programmes implemented widely across the country, including at sales premises of the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) and Farmers' Organisation Authority (LPP). The government announced the restructuring of chicken egg subsidies to take effect as of yesterday as part of a phased and targeted subsidy approach aimed at greater sustainability and higher impact. Chia Seong Pow, chief operating officer of QL Resources Bhd which is one of Malaysia's leading chicken egg producers, said current supply was 'well balanced'. 'Price points for the eggs are okay depending on consumers' preferences. 'Prices are still considered reasonable. 'As for the affordable eggs, it will likely come under the Rahmah programme, but we have to wait to see if there are other programmes introduced by the government for eggs,' he added. According to the ministry, the government spent nearly RM2.5bil to subsidise chicken egg prices between February 2022 and December 2024.

KPKM boosts food security under 13MP with agrofood strategies
PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening national food security through strategic initiatives under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). The ministry stated that Thrust A of the 13MP, which focuses on enhancing economic complexity, will drive comprehensive efforts to reduce import dependency and improve the resilience of Malaysia's food system. Key strategies include increasing food production, securing food supply, and reinforcing supply chains. 'Large-scale agrofood production, including five padi planting seasons in two years, irrigation upgrades, improved crop and livestock varieties, and advanced fisheries technology, are top priorities for the next five years,' KPKM said in a statement. These measures are projected to contribute to a 1.5 per cent annual growth in the agriculture sector. Aligned with the National Agrofood Policy 2021-2030 (NAP 2.0), the 13MP sets specific self-sufficiency ratio (SSR) targets for key commodities. These include fruits (83 per cent), vegetables (79 per cent), beef (50 per cent), poultry (140 per cent), eggs (123 per cent), fisheries (98 per cent), and rice (80 per cent). The ministry emphasised modernisation and mindset shifts among stakeholders to achieve these goals. 'KPKM is confident that collaborative efforts will reinforce food security in line with NAP 2.0 and the 13MP by 2030,' the statement concluded. - Bernama

KPKM to boost self-sufficiency in rice, fisheries, livestock under 13MP
KUALA LUMPUR: The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) has pledged to intensify reforms in the agrofood sector to meet self-sufficiency targets outlined under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Among the key goals are raising the national self-sufficiency rate (SSR) to 80 per cent for rice, 98 per cent for fisheries, 83 per cent for fruits, and 79 per cent for vegetables. For poultry and eggs, Malaysia aims to surpass domestic demand with SSRs of 140 per cent and 123 per cent, respectively. The target for beef and buffalo meat is 50 per cent. In a statement today, the ministry said it expects these efforts to contribute to a 1.5 per cent annual growth in the agriculture sector over the next five years, in line with value-added targets of RM21.8 billion for crops, RM19.7 billion for livestock, RM14 billion for fisheries, and RM2.5 billion for paddy. KPKM said it fully supports the 13MP, describing it as a strategic move to reduce import dependence and strengthen national resilience. It said the plan's Strategy A4 under Pillar A: Enhancing Economic Complexity sets the foundation for expanding food production, strengthening supply chains, and improving food security. "Key initiatives include introducing five paddy planting cycles every two years, upgrading irrigation and drainage systems, developing high-yield seeds and livestock breeds, and deploying advanced technology in aquaculture and capture fisheries." KPKM said the direction set under 13MP complements the National Agrofood Policy 2021–2030 (DAN 2.0) and signals a comprehensive modernisation push across the sector, including governance. "The ministry supports the aspirations of 13MP and is committed to reshaping agricultural development through a whole-of-sector approach. This includes fostering a new mindset, not only among target groups but also among those entrusted with governance." KPKM also thanked the Prime Minister and the Economy Ministry for producing what it described as a timely and important roadmap to steer national development from 2026 to 2030.
