Hamilton, 40, finished 12th in qualifying and called for Ferrari to "change driver" after the result.
He was equally as despondent after finishing 12th in the grand prix, and now Bernie Ecclestone has told him to quit the sport.
Ecclestone told the Daily Mail: "Lewis is very talented, was and probably still is.
"But like a lot of leading sports personalities when they reach the top, there is only one way to go, and it's not a good direction. It's only down.
"They get tired. Lewis is tired. He's been doing what he is doing forever. He needs a rest from it for good, a total reset to do something completely different.
"He may not think it but he will soon get used to doing other stuff away from motor racing in retirement. I think he should have done it a while ago.
"The guy is not a cheat. But he would be cheating himself if he goes on. He should stop now.
"If I were looking after him I would negotiate with Ferrari immediately and say, 'If you have someone to replace Lewis, he'll step aside.'"
Hamilton has not got off to the best start in his three-year contract with Ferrari, which is worth £60m a season.
His team-mate Charles Leclerc qualified on pole in Hungary and has out qualified Hamilton ten times, with the Brit quicker on just two occasions.
Toto Wolff defends F1 driver Lewis Hamilton after 'useless' comments
He has also failed to podium in 14 attempts with his only success this season coming in China when he won the sprint race.
Ecclestone shared concern for Hamtilon and advised him to retire to avoid the risk of racing.
He continued: "I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to Lewis.
"He's not fighting for a world championship and is at a stage of his life when it wouldn't be worth him spending two years laid up in bed with a broken back or anything else nasty.
"He doesn't need to take the risk any longer. He's won seven world titles and that is quite enough."

Nico Rosberg reveals Lewis Hamilton ‘dagger in the heart' moment at Mercedes
Nico Rosberg has weighed in on former teammate Lewis Hamilton 's situation at Ferrari, with the seven-time champion struggling since his blockbuster move to the racing giant. Rosberg was a natural understudy to Michael Schumacher, who he partnered for three years at Mercedes before the latter retired, but the arrival of Hamilton to the team rocked the boat somewhat. Rosberg, speaking on the Sky F1 podcast, suggested that Hamilton could call on that experience to settle him at Ferrari. The Briton has endured his worst-ever season so far, recently describing himself as 'hopeless' after being knocked out in Q2 before a 12th-place finish in Hungary last weekend. He has yet to finish on the podium this season. 'Unfortunately, there's a whole load of lobbying you can do as a driver, which would benefit you,' Rosberg said. 'That was one of Lewis' greatest strengths when I was fighting him at Mercedes. 'He was really good at building strong relationships with all the leadership. Suddenly, I would find out 'Lewis last night went for dinner in Stuttgart with Dieter Zetsche', who was the CEO of Daimler. 'It was like a dagger in the heart just to hear that, because who knows what they were talking about? He was very good at doing that, and he will need to be using those skills now at Ferrari, because it never hurts to get more and more support from the team.' Rosberg's pointed advice comes with Hamilton markedly behind his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc by nearly every measure. The Monegasque took pole at the Hungaroring before finishing fourth, and is one place and 42 points above the Brit in the overall standings, in fifth. He has five podiums this season to Hamilton's none. Leclerc also leads his teammate 10-4 in the qualifying stakes, with Hamilton at an average deficit of 0.2 seconds to his teammate over the season so far. His poor qualifying lap times have put him on the back foot when it comes to picking up race day results - and perhaps too in the Ferrari pecking order.

Liverpool ramp up replacement striker search after agreeing Darwin Nunez fee
Liverpool have agreed a deal to sell Darwin Nunez to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal for an initial £46.2m. The striker, who wanted to leave to go to Saudi Arabia in January, is set to end his three-season spell at Anfield, while Liverpool could now enter the market for another centre-forward. They have had a £110m bid for Alexander Isak swiftly rejected by Newcastle and have indicated they will not raise their offer but are looking for a player they deem of sufficient quality to start, who is available and at what they regard as a fair price. They have already signed one striker this summer, in Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £69m, and if they cannot add another, are aware that players such as Florian Wirtz, Rio Ngumoha, Curtis Jones and Jeremie Frimpong can all play in the front three if required. Before Al Hilal made an offer that could rise to £56.6m, including add-ons, Nunez also attracted interest from AC Milan but there were doubts if the Serie A side could meet Liverpool's asking price. Napoli had bid for Nunez earlier in the summer, but without coming close to a sum Liverpool would accept and when they wanted to defer the first payment until 2026, before instead signing attacker Lorenzo Lucca. Nunez joined Liverpool for £64m in 2022, with add-ons taking the potential fee to a club record of £85m. He scored 15 goals in his first season in England and 18 in the second but got just seven in 47 appearances in all competitions last year as Arne Slot preferred to use either the late Diogo Jota or Luis Diaz as his centre-forward. Liverpool rejected Nunez's request to leave in mid-season, wanting to keep him to help their successful bid to win a 20th league title. Should he go now leave, Liverpool will have brought in around £190m for players this summer, following Tyler Morton's move to Lyon for £15m.
