PM approves modern digital ecosystem for Pakistan revenue watchdog to increase collection
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the development of a modern, world-class digital ecosystem in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and directed hiring of world-renowned experts, his office said, in a bid to increase revenue collection. The prime minister issued the directives at a meeting he presided over to review ongoing reforms in the FBR, during which officials briefed participants about linking FBR data to a single hub for real-time monitoring. The reforms are tied to the government's economic stabilization agenda and structural benchmarks under a $7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. Pakistan has one of the lowest tax-to-GDP ratios in the region, despite a population of more than 240 million. Speaking at the meeting, Sharif said the country's economy was moving in the right direction, thanks to the ongoing FBR reforms, and the government could only reduce tax on common people by increasing the tax base and eliminating informal economy. "An entire digital ecosystem should be created to strengthen the new [FBR] system," he said. "All data from raw material production and import, product manufacturing to consumer purchases should be linked to a single system." In June, Sharif's government set a record-high tax collection target of Rs14.13 trillion ($47.4 billion) for the fiscal year 2025–26, marking a 9 percent increase from the previous year. Officials say meeting this goal is essential to reducing reliance on external debt and ensuring long-term fiscal sustainability. The prime minister said this consolidated data, collected under the new FBR system, should be used for economic, strategic decision-making. "The system should be made so effective that the entire value chain can be directly monitored digitally," the prime minister added. Earlier this month, the FBR launched simplified digital tax returns for salaried individuals, aimed at increasing tax compliance and widening the narrow tax base.

Where We Are Going Today: Ruya in Riyadh
Ruya, meaning 'dream' in Turkish, offers an authentic dining experience that truly captures the essence of Turkiye's flavors and atmosphere. Located in Riyadh's stylish neighborhood of Sulaymaniyah, this restaurant has quickly become one of the capital's standout spots. From the moment you step inside, the warm ambiance and aromatic spices transport you to Istanbul. The service is exceptional, with welcoming and attentive staff who enhance the overall experience. They also offer simit, which is Turkish sesame bread. Paired with the tea they serve, it creates a cozy atmosphere that invites you to stay longer. You may start your meal with crispy borek, setting the stage for the deliciousness that follows. The menu features elevated Turkish classics, focusing on modern dishes inspired by the rich history and culture of the country. There are juicy kebabs and pillowy-soft bread, each dish bursting with flavor and prepared with care. Among the highlights are the icli kofte (Turkish stuffed meatballs), crunchy on the outside and savory within, and the shish taouk, so tender it melts in your mouth. While the appetizers are outstanding and truly the highlight of the meal, you might find some of the main courses a bit too neutral. They are well-prepared but could have benefited from more depth in seasoning and spice. The dessert, however, will provide a sweet finish to your evening. Overall, Ruya is a delightful escape for anyone craving comfort food with a Turkish twist.

Pakistan, Türkiye discuss regional security issues amid deepening defense cooperation
ISLAMABAD: Officials from Islamabad and Ankara discussed regional and global security issues on Thursday, Pakistan's foreign ministry said, as both countries eye greater collaboration in defense and other sectors. A delegation of Turkish officials led by the country's Director General for South Asia Ambassador Cihad Erginay met a Pakistani delegation headed by Additional Secretary (Afghanistan & West Asia) Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Syed Ali Asad Gillani. The two sides met during the inaugural meeting of the Pakistan-Türkiye Joint Standing Committee (JSC) on Security, Defense and Intelligence. The joint committee was created after the seventh session of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) between Pakistan and Türkiye on February 12 and 13, Pakistan's foreign ministry said. 'Both sides discussed emerging geo-political trends including global and regional security issues,' the foreign ministry said in a statement. It said discussions at the joint committee will contribute to preparations for a meeting of the joint commission between the two nations, which will be co-chaired by Pakistan's deputy prime minister and Türkiye's foreign minister. 'Both countries continue to work closely across a broad spectrum of areas, including defense, trade, energy, transport, culture, tourism, education, defense industries, agriculture, health, science and technology,' the statement concluded. The development takes place amid deepening relations between the two countries and follows Türkiye's public condemnation of Indian cross-border strikes in Pakistan during a brief conflict between the two South Asian neighbors in May. Both countries have maintained close military ties in recent years. Under a 2018 agreement, Türkiye is delivering four MILGEM-class corvettes to the Pakistan Navy, with two built in Istanbul and two at Karachi Shipyard under a technology transfer arrangement. The first vessel, PNS Babur, was delivered in 2023. Türkiye's foreign and defense ministers also arrived in Pakistan earlier this month for a series of high-level meetings focusing on counterterrorism, defense cooperation and broader strategic ties. Pakistan's Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad attended the 17th International Defense Industry Fair in Istanbul on Wednesday. The top Pakistani general held separate meetings with the defense ministers of Türkiye and Azerbaijan to discuss bilateral security cooperation, the Pakistani military's media wing said.
