
‘I go there instead of going out': why a gym is the place to be for UK's gen Z
A perfect evening out for Louis involves getting hot and sweaty, and the only drink he is downing is water.
He is one of a growing number of gen Zers who regard going to the gym as an integral part of their routine, and often preferable to sinking pints in the pub.
Louis, 20, who lives in Chichester, likes to 'kill two birds with one stone' by also catching up with friends while he works out. 'I will text a friend to let them know when I'm going, and then just like that, I have someone to talk to for an hour or 90 minutes,' he says.
Despite initially believing his climbing club was enough exercise, he now cannot imagine life without his additional six-times-a-week gym sessions.
'I sleep better, I eat healthier, and I love that endorphin rush after a workout,' says Louis, who is doing a degree apprenticeship in project management and logistics.
His story is not unique.
The days of the pub dominating young people's social lives look to be dwindling as more young people sprint towards the gym as the place to hang out while working out.
A recent report found that generation Z – people born between 1997 and 2012, who are between 13 and 28 – are the key demographic driving the boom in gym membership. The report by UKActive, the trade body that represents most of Britain's fitness operators, found that 11.5 million people aged 16 and over belong to a gym in the UK – a new high.
The findings, it adds, indicate 'a shift in societal priorities toward health and wellbeing' and suggest that 'for younger people, gym membership is essential'.
Research published by the credit rating service Intuit Credit Karma found that nearly three in 10 (27%) 18- to 24-year-olds consider gym membership to be a necessity.
Meanwhile, gen Zers are increasingly ditching alcohol in favour of soft drinks, opting for 'sober socialising', partly for health reasons but also down to cost, according to research by Mintel.
These were certainly themes coming through from people who responded to an online callout.
Louis spends £38 a month on his gym membership and another £30 a month on his climbing club, but says that compares more than favourably with the cost of socialising.
'Being at the gym with friends takes away the distraction of alcohol and going out for me.
'Even an expensive gym membership costs less for a month than a single night out, making memories that I'll have forgotten in the morning. That's why I've ditched them and replaced them with the gym.'
This view is echoed by Niyi, 25, who has been going to the gym since he was 15.
'I'm fascinated by the fact that we as gen Z may be the fittest generation yet due to gym habits,' he says.
Niyi sees his daily gym-going as 'a form of therapy', a sentiment that came up repeatedly from many who got in touch with the Guardian.
Like Louis, Niyi also regards it as a social space where he can meet new people and 'make connections'.
'I believe you can learn something from anyone at the gym, and I love interacting with people to network and talk,' he says. 'My social habits these days emit from the gym – most of my friends are interested in fitness in some form.'
Niyi, who lives in Westminster, London, and is a regional project lead at a human rights charity, spends £100 a month on his gym membershipand also pays £80 a month for his boxing club. But he is comfortable with this outlay.
'I think it is worth it when you see it in terms of an investment in your physical and mental health, making me fitter and the best I can be,' he says.
He enjoys the gym so much that he has even developed it into a side hustle, working as a personal trainer, teaching in-person and online sessions in his spare time.
Niyi and Louis are also big fans of the sauna, saying it is a hotbed of lively conversation. 'People go there to relax, and it's surprisingly easy to chat,' says Niyi. 'I've made some of my best connections there.'
Louis adds: 'It's brilliant, It's such a sociable place. I've had some great conversations and met people from all walks of life. It's hilarious when you think about it: you're in a hot, steamy room full of half-naked people, yet it's so natural to have a chat.'
Like Niyi, Erin loved her gym's fitness classes so much she decided she wanted to teach them.
She goes to the gym at least four times a weekand teaches two weekly fitness classes alongside her main job as an editorial assistant at a publisher.
The gym, she says, is also the focus of her social life. 'I go there instead of going out,' says Erin, 25, who lives in Cambridge. 'The group exercises have a lovely social atmosphere.'
Her gym membership is usually £30 a month, but she pays a little less – a staff discount perk.
'I think the gym almost has a hidden social aspect,' she says. 'It's not explicitly social, and that takes the pressure off. There are no awkward silences as you are getting on with the class. Equally, you can speak to someone if you want to.'
She also cherishes the opportunity to meet a cross-section of people.
'I don't have any kids and I live with just my flatmate,' she says. 'So I'm not sure where else in my day-to-day life I would meet grandmothers and people's mums.'

EXCLUSIVE Hotel guest who was bitten 30 times by bed bugs in infested room tells how she woke up to see them 'crawling on the bed'
A woman was left with more than 30 red and itchy bites on her body after staying in a hotel room infested with bed bugs. Sharon Aggarwal, 53, shut herself in the bathroom for two hours after she woke up in the middle of the night 'scratching' at a three-star hotel in Henley-on-Thames. The IT worker, who frequently travels to the picturesque town in Oxfordshire for work, said she pulled back the sheet and could see several bugs 'crawling on the bed'. Mrs Aggarwal said she squashed a large one on the pillow and was horrified to see blood spurt out of it. The 53-year-old from the Midlands was staying at The Catherine Wheel last month - a historic 12th century pub and guesthouse that is now owned by JD Wetherspoon. Mrs Aggarwal told MailOnline: 'I suddenly woke up in the middle of the night - all itchy. 'I pulled the sheet back and all I could see were these things crawling on the bed. It was pretty gross. I squished on of them and blood spurted out onto me. 'After seeing them all over the news a couple of years ago, I was like oh no, I know what this is. 'I looked at my hand and I could see these bites. Then there was this quite big one on the pillow. I was like "oh God that was right by my head". 'At this point, I just went into the bathroom and shut the door. It was around 3am in the middle of the night. I just stayed there until 5am until the sun started to come up. 'I was covered in bites. I had like two on my face, three or four on my neck and another three around the waistband of my pyjamas. 'Then about ten on one hand and around seven or eight on the other.' Mrs Aggarwal said the bites were unlike anything that she had experienced before - and the itching only started to subside when she went to the pharmacist. 'I've been bitten by mosquitos in the past but these were the most itchy things. 'They came up like big welts on my face so I also went to the pharmacist to take some antihistamines. 'I had to take them every six hours.' Mrs Aggarwal said she managed to trap one of the bed bugs under a pint glass and showed it to the night porter at The Catherine Wheel. She said she also called the JD Wetherspoon customer service line to complain and left a note at reception when she checked out. 'I did not hear back from the Catherine Wheel for ages. It's not exactly the Ritz but I would expect it to be clean,' she said. 'This is a popular hotel and they have a busy summer period coming up. Obviously they have the Henley Regatta and Festival. 'The hotel did get back to me and admitted they did have bed bugs in the room but could not find them. 'I said sleep in the bed and you'll find them. I heard that environmental health are investigating as well and will eradicate the bugs. 'I've since heard back from Wetherspoons and they have offered to reimburse me for the night and the room.' A spokesman for Wetherspoons confirmed the presence of bed bugs in the room and said it had been 'immediately taken out of use'. He said: 'We were informed by a guest staying in the hotel on May 6 of the suspected presence of bed bugs in her room. 'This was confirmed after her departure and the room was immediately taken out of use. 'We are liaising directly with the guest concerned to address her concerns. Like all hotel operators, Wetherspoons has procedures in place to minimise this problem. 'These include daily checks by trained staff when servicing hotel rooms and regular preventative visits by qualified contracts, which means episodes such as this are rare.'

How to wear white denim and not look naff, from £45
In this era of guilt-inducing consumption, it's good to find desirable items with proven longevity. White jeans, for instance. Liz Hurley was on to something all those years ago – although she was ridiculed because of her dedication to the white skinny denim cause. What's changed in the 30-plus-year interim to make them a bona fide classic? Not the fabrications, that's for sure. So how did they make the mighty journey from sartorially dodgy to Alexa Chung? When people say nothing changes in fashion, they're not digging deep enough. Sure, you could wear certain items from any decade in the past six or seven, and make them work. But they may operate in different ways, their connotations and subtext might be different. White handbags were once a quaint peccadillo of Princess Margaret. White shoes, especially in winter, were Bet Lynch territory. But then Kim Kardashian started appropriating some of Bet's looks and Made in Chelsea types borrowed from Kim and everyone got very confused about what is and isn't naff. There are quite a few white staples that were once no-go areas, like white nail varnish. Not everything white goes in the same positive direction, however. Ultra-white teeth were the preserve of clueless, rich Hollywood types. Not good. They still are but now they reek of one-colour-fits-all chain-store dentistry. Not any better. Where it all went right for white denim, I think, is with Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Where Hurley and co's white denim dressing looked a bit effortful (always with heels, big hair and carefully applied make-up), CBK's was outdoorsy, carefree, effortless, peak Nantucket. If you feel the cold horribly, like me, white jeans mean you can carry on wearing jumpers, blazers, cropped tweed jackets and still give off vaguely summery vibes. You can wear all your favourite classics – monochromatic stripes, tan accessories (white with white is too much), button-down shirts – and provided your denim is reasonably loose and slouchy, especially on the legs, none of it will look old. But if you want to make things a little more interesting, try adding some tufty texture on top, or a fringe-trimmed bag; thread a scarf through the belt loops; throw on a cropped or lightweight khaki trench à la Chung, or some asymmetric or long shirting, finishing off with velvet Venetian slippers (in case you were thinking of splurging £1,100 on The Row's, may I suggest the real thing, from Piedaterre, in many colours, for around £120). As for the actual denim: there is so much good stuff, from barrel legs at DL1961, which use 100 times less water than the average in their production, to M&S's version (only available in store at the moment because of their computer flame-out). Wear your white denims for the next decade at least and keep them white by soaking them overnight in water and white vinegar, and the next time they need repairing, investigate the art of sashiko (Japanese darning). North Yorkshire man's efforts to help others find sobriety
Three years ago Jimi Wilson was drinking well over ten times the weekly recommended alcohol limit every week - now he's not had a drink in over two years."Usually I would drink as soon as I finished work, which was usually two o'clock in the afternoon, right up until 10 or 11," says 40-year-old Mr now volunteers with North Yorkshire Horizons, which supported him when he wanted to quit group provides support for people with drug and alcohol dependency from its five hubs in Northallerton, Selby, Scarborough, Skipton and Harrogate and holds smaller drop-in sessions in rural locations like his home town of Bentham. "I finished work maybe two years ago due to my capability. I would leave work early on many occasions due to anxiety and it turns out it was my alcohol use which was driving my anxiety" says Mr Wilson, who has remained out of employment during his England recommends "men and women are not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis", which Mr Wilson was exceeding on a daily basis."I was drinking around 150 units a week, around 20 units a day, about 12 pints of strong lager."My health had declined massively, I was off work, signed-off long term, I couldn't really get around so much due to the pressure I put on my body, so it was just a case of getting alcohol delivered from supermarkets."I was just drinking at home, signed off work long-term, drinking at home, all day, every day."
