Muhammad Mokaev names one fighter who could dethrone UFC champ Alexandre Pantoja
Undefeated flyweight Muhammad Mokaev believes UFC champion Alexandre Pantoja has the rest of the division mentally defeated, with the exception of one fighter.
Pantoja (29-5 MMA, 13-3 UFC) is not-so-quietly on one of the most impressive runs in the sport, with three title defenses under his belt, and a potential fourth just over a month away. Since most of the top flyweights have been hanging around in the rankings for years, Pantoja has already faced and defeated half of the current top 10, while sending others out of the top 15. Mokaev understands the familiarity, which he believes gives Pantoja a mental edge.
"You know, the flyweight division, the guys been in the division for a long time," Mokaev said in an interview with Chael Sonnen. "I've been a fan of Tim Elliott. 2017, I watched his fight live against Demetrious Johnson. He was 'Ultimate Fighter' winner. Then, I fought myself in 2023 against Tim Elliott. So, those guys have been in that division for so long.
"If you start in that division, growing up with them, you're going to read them. You watch the fights, you already like – it feels like your neighbors. So, he already read them, and so he basically just have to get in shape and perform, that's it. Mentally, Pantoja is in their heads."
Mokaev believes there's only one fighter currently on the UFC's flyweight roster who could dethrone Pantoja – and it's someone he has first-hand experience against.
"Only guy I think who can beat Pantoja right now in the division, I would say, is Manel Kape," Mokaev said.
It's a matchup that could come together soon, and it wouldn't be the first time Pantoja and Kape met inside the octagon.
Pantoja won a unanimous decision against Kape in 2021, a victory that kickstarted his run to capturing the flyweight title. For Kape, the result was the first of back-to-back losses that year. He has since rebounded to go 6-1, and currently has a No. 1 contender fight on the books against former title challenger Brandon Royval at UFC 317. Mokaev also mixed it up with Kape, winning a unanimous decision at UFC 304, so he knows what it takes to deal with "Starboy."
For Mokaev, as he continues his career outside of the UFC, his main focus right now is to continue evolving his striking. Should he ever receive the call to return to the UFC, he intends to be a more well-rounded fighter with the threat of wrestling always ready as a backup plan.

Jon Anik dubs Merab Dvalishvili as 'greatest bantamweight of all time' ahead of UFC 316
Jon Anik dubs Merab Dvalishvili as 'greatest bantamweight of all time' ahead of UFC 316 No one can accuse Jon Anik of bias when it comes to the discussion around the greatest UFC bantamweight of all time. It's no secret lead UFC play-by-play commentator Anik has a very close relationship with former UFC and WEC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, who has served as a broadcast partner for the better part of a decade. For many years it was Anik's steadfast opinion that the now-retired Cruz's (24-4 MMA, 7-3 UFC) accomplishments were a tier above any other 135-pound fighter in history. That's no longer the case, though. The run reigning titleholder Merab Dvalishvili has put together ahead of Saturday's UFC 316 rematch against Sean O'Malley has superseded that of Cruz. "I do believe he already has status as the greatest bantamweight of all time," Anik told MMA Junkie. "I say that as a man who if I got married this weekend, Dominick Cruz would be a groomsman. He's one of my best friends in the world. But when I look at the body of work of Merab Dvalishvili in the modern era, he could be 14-0 in the UFC. He lost to Frankie Saenz (by split decision), then a contentious ending against Ricky Simon. After those two guys it's been 12 straight wins ever since." After retiring from MMA in February, Cruz's in-cage legacy is set in stone. His many accolades will lead to a spot in the UFC Hall of Fame eventually, but Dvalishvili is still in the midst of writing his story. If Dvalishvili (19-4 MMA, 12-2 UFC) is able to put a second win over O'Malley (18-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) on his resume in their headliner at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+), it extend his winning streak to 13 consecutive fights and give him two title defenses in this reign. The list of opponents Dvalishvili has already beaten is nothing short of impressive, and if he keeps going, Anik thinks his sentiment around the GOAT conversation will be shared by everyone else in the sport. "He left a murderer's row of champions in his wake before he even fought for the title," Anik said. "He beat Henry Cejudo, beat Petr Yan, beat Jose Aldo, then he beat Sean O'Malley and defends the title on the challenger's timeline in beating Umar Nurmagomedov. Now the rematch with Sean O'Malley? As far as I'm concerned, with respect to Aljamain Sterling and my BFF Dominick Cruz, the greatest of all time, not so quietly, is Merab 'The Machine' Dvalishvili."

Mateusz Gamrot calls out 'God of Comfort Zone' Benoit Saint Denis for UFC Paris showdown
Mateusz Gamrot calls out 'God of Comfort Zone' Benoit Saint Denis for UFC Paris showdown Mateusz Gamrot shoots his shot following his win at Saturday's UFC on ESPN 68. Show Caption Hide Caption Mateusz Gamrot calls for top lightweights after halting Ludovit Klein UFC on ESPN 68 winner Mateusz Gamrot talks to MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight after his unanimous decision victory over Ludovit Klein. LAS VEGAS – Mateusz Gamrot not only wants to beat Benoit Saint Denis, but he also wants him to change his fighter nickname. Following a dominant win over Ludovit Klein at Saturday's UFC on ESPN 68, Gamrot (25-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) called out the Frenchman, and he did so by taking a shot at his "God of War" nickname. Gamrot, who had been searching for a fight for months prior to the Klein booking, claims he was offered to be Saint Denis' replacement opponent for UFC 315 earlier in May, but Saint Denis turned him down and ended up fighting and submitting Kyle Prepolec. The move didn't sit well with Gamrot, and now he wants to fight him in the UFC's expected show in Paris in September. "I can change Benoit Saint Denis' nickname," Gamrot told reporters at the UFC on ESPN 68 post-fight press conference. "He has the nickname 'God of War,' but I can change his nickname to 'God of Comfort Zone' because bro, he got offered to fight with me one week before, and many times he called me out. So he gets opportunity and he says no. Bro, what the f*ck? 'God of Comfort Zone.'" Gamrot fought an unranked opponent in Klein this past Saturday, something that's relatively unusual for someone who's just outside the top five of the UFC official lightweight rankings. The Polish fighter admits being frustrated at the difficulty he's faced lately in getting the bigger names in the division. "When I came to Florida, I always asked to give me the fight, but this moment everybody was booked in the ranking, so I had two options: Wait a few months later and get someone from ranking or take someone without ranking and be active," Gamrot said. "So the choice for me was clear: I want to fight. Of course, this was a big risk, but like I said before, If you be live in yourself and your skills, you can fight with everybody. I did this, I took this fight. It was a big risk, but I won tonight, so I'm so happy: double check."
