Mark Nicolson enjoying Brora Rangers' Premier Sports Cup campaign as he reveals it could be his last season
The Breedon Highland League champions take on League One side Kelty Hearts on Tuesday night at Dudgeon Park after starting their section with a 2-0 home loss to Kilmarnock on Saturday.
This is defender Nicolson's ninth season with Brora Rangers, and the 37-year-old, who spent a decade with Elgin City earlier in his career, revealed this may be his final season.
He said: 'It's good to be involved in the League Cup. Sometimes you maybe take these sort of games for granted and I've been fortunate to play in these type of games a fair bit during my career, and you've got to enjoy them.
'This is my ninth season at Brora. I'm getting on a bit and I'm 95% sure this will be my last season before retiring.
'I want to make the most of it and enjoy every minute, because I'm pretty certain this will be it for me.'
This is the third time Brora have competed in the League Cup group stage.
The Cattachs have yet to win a game – although they did record two draws in 2020, but lost the subsequent penalty shoot-outs for a bonus point.
Nicolson is hopeful Brora can pick up that maiden victory and believes the clash with Kelty provides a decent opportunity to do that.
He added: 'We don't have a particularly great record in the competition, but hopefully we can get that first win.
'This game against Kelty and East Fife next week are two teams we feel we can match, so I don't see why we can't win those games.
'We've got good players in our squad who could play at a higher level and hopefully we can show that.
'We're a confident team and we're comfortable playing anyone at home.
'I'm hopeful the Kelty game will be more even.
'We know they're a good side with some really good players, but we feel we're closer to them in terms of ability than we were compared with Kilmarnock.
'Kelty are part-time like us and hopefully we should have more of the ball and be able to create a few more chances than we did on Saturday.
'We won't underestimate Kelty, but we're confident in our ability playing at home.'
Brora are set to welcome back James Wallace and Alex Cooper for the game against Kelty, while they have also secured winger Max Ewan on a new contract until the summer of 2028.
The 24-year-old joined the Cattachs from Nairn County in August 2021 and has helped them win the Highland League, three R Davidson (Banchory) Highland League Cups and two North of Scotland Cups.
Meanwhile, the Highland League's other Premier Sports Cup representative, Brechin City, are also in action on Tuesday night.
The Hedgemen take on Championship outfit Queen's Park at Lesser Hampden.
Brechin were beaten 7-0 by Falkirk in their opening League Cup fixture on Saturday, while Queen's Park lost 2-1 against Spartans.

Kilmarnock boss Stuart Kettlewell hails debut keeper after fine display in win over Livingston
The Polish stopper made a number of decent saves in the 1-0 victory Kilmarnock boss Stuart Kettlewell heaped praise on debut keeper Max Stryjek after he pulled off a string of fine saves in their 1-0 win over Livingston last night. The victory, against the stopper's former team, puts the Rugby Park side in control of Group H with two wins from two. Mo Sylla's first half own goal decided the game but the Polish keeper impressed in denying Stevie May twice and repelling Robbie Muirhead on a number of occasions. Kettlewell said: 'You just see his experience, don't you? He's some character, but he just wants to play football. He wants to get back out on the pitch. He's been a guy for a number of years now that's been active in the game, playing, being involved, under pressure, doing well. 'So I think you can kind of see that in his performance. He's been really vibrant about the place and delighted that he performed as well as he did.' It was far from a vintage display from Kilmarnock, but Kettlewell insisted he's not going to be overly negative at this stage of the season. He added: 'I need to rein myself in for being negative, because I absolutely think we can play much better than what we did. I think we'll have to over the course of the season. 'What the players showed us was a bit of grit, a bit of determination, to make sure they dragged themselves across the line to get the three points.'

Hibs recruit's impact clear as rival says they can't afford like for like replacement
The impact of one Hibs signing at his former club has been made apparent in a transfer verdict. Sign up to our Hibs football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! A rival boss has admitted that they can't go out and sign a player with the same current quality as one who's just left for Hibs. Clubs across the country are hoping to retain their best players while adding top quality additions. For some, it's about replacing those who have gone to pastures new and that's the position Dundee find themselves in with versatile star Josh Mulligan swapping Dens Park for Easter Road. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Mulligan has impressed in early friendly action for Hibs and his exit has not been helped with Lyall Cameron leaving Dundee and joining Rangers. Former Hearts captain Steven Pressley is now the head coach in Tayside and with Callum Jones arriving after time at Hull City, he admits like for like quality in terms of the departing duo can't be captured. Dundee transfer verdict on star departing for Hibs Pressley said: 'The first thing is that it's not easy to replace the two that have left. Financially, we can't go out and sign ready-made replacements. If you look at Jones, he's at a really good age just now. He's had a number of loans. He's done a lot of his foundational work. But we've seen enough in his performances around the areas we are looking for and the experience he's had, he's ready to kick on. 'That's where we are in our recruitment. We can't sign a ready-made replacement for a Lyall Cameron. We have to sign players who maybe haven't quite put it all together yet. Callum has a lot of good attributes and with our support we hope he can start putting them all together here. 'I think I sense also the fact that he's been desperately looking for a home, a stable home where he can really kick his career on. Callum will bring good running power to the middle of the pitch. And that's an aspect we think we really need.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Steven Pressley verdict on shock defeat The former Jambo's stint in the Dundee dugout did not get off to the best start at the weekend as they were shocked at home by Airdrie in their first Premier Sports Cup group stage game, losing 1-0. Pressley said: : 'Although we didn't want it at the weekend, setbacks are often the catalyst to move things forward. Because then you have to refocus and identify the problems. 'So, I think that's healthy at times, I think in pre-season, although this was a cup competition, but pre-seasons without setbacks can be dangerous. It can now be a real catalyst for us to say, look, we've got so much work ahead of us, and I think that is really important. We believe in what we are doing, but we are realistic about what we are doing. It was our first real game of any note and the first time we were really stress-tested. 'Do I think we are anywhere near resembling where I want us to be? Absolutely not, no. Not even close. But I believe in the process and I do believe in what we are trying to do. think we've got a group of players that have really bought into what we're trying to do. Along the way, there are going to be bumps. I was under no illusions, this was always going to be a difficult job, a challenging job. But I enjoy that challenge, and I also enjoy working with this group. I think we have a group of players that want to put things right here and who are really pushing to be better, and that's all I ask for. 'All the other things we have to accept and take care of, but as long as we believe in what we're doing, I think we will be fine.'

Stuart Kettlewell hails Max Stryjek after Kilmarnock's cup win over Livingston
Kilmarnock manager Stuart Kettlewell was delighted with the debut performance of goalkeeper Max Stryjek in his side's 1-0 Premier Sports Cup win over Livingston. The Pole denied his former club on a number of occasions as Killie took control of Group H. Stryjek has returned to Scottish football three years after leaving Livi for Wycombe and after a season of largely playing understudy at Jagiellonia Bialystok in his homeland. Speaking after his first home match in charge, Kettlewell said of his keeper: 'You just see his experience, don't you? He's some character, but he just wants to play football. He wants to get back out on the pitch. 'He's been a guy for a number of years now that's been active in the game, playing, being involved, under pressure, doing well. 'So I think you can kind of see that in his performance. He's been really vibrant about the place and delighted that he performed as well as he did.' Killie triumphed thanks to a 31st-minute own goal from Mo Sylla, who was unfortunate to see the ball bounce in off him after some poor handling from goalkeeper Jerome Prior. 'I need to rein myself in for being negative, because I absolutely think we can play much better than what we did,' Kettlewell added. 'I think we'll have to over the course of the season. 'What the players showed us was a bit of grit, a bit of determination, to make sure they dragged themselves across the line to get the three points.' Livingston manager David Martindale was encouraged by some of his team's attacking play and is set to add to his squad in the coming days. Martindale will attend a work permit hearing on Thursday in a bid to sign 36-year-old DR Congo international striker Jeremy Bokila from Willem II, who were relegated from the Dutch top flight last season. 'I'm pretty confident it will get passed, he is coming from a real top level,' he said. 'And then there's two younger ones who I'm speaking to their parent clubs about. Whether that's going to be loans or permanent deals… 'If I can get those three players in the building this week or early next week, I'll be over the moon with what we've got, although we would need to trim the squad a bit.'
