Malaysia records RM3.29bil approved investments in AI for January-June
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has successfully drawn approved investments totalling RM3.29 billion for the artificial intelligence (AI) sector under the Digital Malaysia initiative for the period from January to June this year, with the potential to create approximately 6,920 job opportunities.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the achievement showed investor confidence in Malaysia's potential as a regional AI hub, thus strengthening the country's position in the global digital ecosystem.
He said the contribution of AI and technology to the country's gross domestic product in 2023 was 23.5 per cent, and the government targeted the contribution to grow to 25.5 per cent by the end of 2025.
"I am confident that this target can be achieved based on positive developments in investments, talent development and the implementation of various AI use cases across sectors," he said.
He was replying to a question from Datuk Wira Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) on the progress achieved by the National AI Office so far and what its contribution is to the development of AI.
This achievement is in line with the government's efforts to develop the National AI Action Plan 2026-2030, based on data, talent, and infrastructure, to ensure that the benefits of technology can be maximised for the economy and the rakyat. - Bernama

Sept 8 hearing for Tuan Ibrahim's defamation suit against Rafizi
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here will hear the defamation suit filed by former environment and water minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man against former economy minister Datuk Seri Mohd Rafizi Ramli over six days in September. The suit, filed on Nov 17, 2022, relates to statements allegedly defamatory concerning the approval of several projects, including a flood mitigation project, awarded to a company. Lawyer Yusfarizal Yussoff, representing Tuan Ibrahim, said Judge Datuk Aliza Sulaiman had set Sept 8, 9, 10, 11, 29 and 30 for the trial. Neither of the two former ministers was present at proceedings on Thursday (Aug 14), which were conducted in chambers. In his statement of claim, Tuan Ibrahim alleged that Rafizi made defamatory statements against him at two press conferences at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya, which were streamed live on the defendant's YouTube account on Jan 7 and 9, 2022. The statements allegedly implied that he was involved in approving a project worth RM2bil for the Sungai Langat flood mitigation project, as well as a sewage treatment plant and sewerage pipe network projects in Kinta and Petaling Jaya, bringing the total value to more than RM2.3bil. – Bernama

Over 82,000 immoral social media content removed at MCMC's request since 2022
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 82,076 pieces of immoral content on social media were taken down by platform providers between Jan 1, 2022, and July 1 this year at the request of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The ministry, in a written reply to Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib (PN-Parit), posted on the Parliament's website, stated that the removed content violated the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) as well as other existing laws. Other actions taken include the blocking of the Facebook page named Grup Budak-Budak Sekolah Rendah, which was found to contain elements that violated Section 233 of Act 588, including child sexual abuse material (CSAM). In response to Muhammad Ismi's question on the existence of immoral service offerings on social media apps, the ministry explained that those actions were part of joint anti-vice enforcement operations under Ops Pedo and Ops Noda, aimed at curbing the spread of inappropriate content on digital and social media platforms. The ministry clarified that content removals are subject to the assessment and discretion of social media platforms, based on their respective community guidelines and the application of relevant local laws. "In addition to social media filtering, the government, through MCMC, has also implemented blocks and restrictions on applications offering immoral services on platforms such as Google Play and Apple Store," the reply stated. However, the ministry noted that control over content on such platforms remains under the policies of their respective providers, which are foreign-owned and operated outside Malaysia. From Jan 1, 2022, to July 1, 2025, social media platforms also removed 37,845 instances of false information and 7,846 posts linked to the sensitive 3R issues (race, religion, and royalty) upon MCMC's request. In a separate response to Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar), the ministry said these actions included the takedown of politically driven troll accounts that manipulated information to provoke racial and religious tensions. "All takedown actions are executed in accordance with existing legislation, regardless of an individual's political affiliation or beliefs, to ensure that freedom of expression is not abused," the ministry said. The ministry also confirmed that MCMC works closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in enforcing Act 588 and related laws. "Action may be taken against any individual under Section 233 of Act 588 for misusing applications or social media services to create and disseminate false or offensive content, with the intent to annoy, harass or harm others," it added. – Bernama

Company director pleads not guilty to cheating over frozen chicken feet supply
KUALA LUMPUR: A company director denied cheating charges in the Sessions Court today over a frozen chicken feet supply deal to China two years ago. R. Gopinatan Pillai, 60, allegedly deceived a victim into believing he could supply frozen chicken feet for export to China. The victim reportedly deposited RM273,987.50 into the accused's company bank account based on this claim. The offence allegedly occurred at an office in Menara Sentral Vista, Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad, on July 5, 2023. The charge falls under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' jail, whipping, and a fine. Judge Hamidah Mohamed Deril scheduled the next mention and bail appeal for September 2. Gopinatan Pillai, currently detained in Sungai Buloh Prison for another offence, informed the court his lawyer was absent today. Deputy Public Prosecutor Batrisyia Mohd Khusri proposed bail at RM30,000 with one surety. - Bernama
