How to Get Clear Icons and Other Home Screen Changes in the iOS 26 Beta

CNET01-08-2025
Apple released the first public beta of iOS 26 on July 24 and the beta brings a Liquid Glass design to the iPhones of developers and beta testers, alongside other updates like a new Games app. As part of the Liquid Glass design, the beta update lets people turn their icons semi-transparent. And this builds on the home screen customization options Apple introduced to the iPhone with iOS 18.
Apple released iOS 18 in 2024 and it introduced a major (and long overdue) change to your iPhone, the ability to customize your home screen. With iOS 18, you can remove app labels, change the color of app icons, arrange apps around the screen in new ways and much more. You can frame your background with your apps or give your iPhone a more personal touch with different colored apps.
Here are all the ways you can customize your home screen to make it as fun and unique as you are.
While many of these customization options are available to everyone now, some options are only available to developers and beta testers in the iOS 26 beta. As that update is still in beta, the update might be buggy for you, and your device's battery life may be affected, so it's best to keep those troubles off your primary device. If you want to try the beta out, I recommend downloading it on a secondary device.
It's also possible that Apple could adjust these, and other, update features before the company releases the final version of iOS 26 this fall.
How to remove app labels in iOS 18
1. Long-press on your background to enter jiggle mode -- where your apps are all shaking.
2. Tap Edit in the top left corner of your screen.
3. Tap Customize.
4. Tap Large in the new menu that appears at the bottom of your screen.
Your app icons will grow and the labels beneath them will disappear. This looks much cleaner to me and I don't plan on displaying app labels ever again.
The Customize menu in the iOS 26 beta replaces the Small or Large options with the two squares in the corner.

If you don't like this, follow the above steps again but tap Small. The apps will revert to their normal size and the labels will reappear.
If you are using the iOS 26 beta, you won't see the options for Small and Large. Instead, you will see two squares -- one is small and the other is large -- in the top right corner of the Customize menu. Tap these squares to make your app icons smaller or larger.
How to change the color of your app icons
1. Long-press on your background to enter jiggle mode -- where your apps are shaking.
2. Tap Edit in the top left corner of your screen.
3. Tap Customize.
4. Tap the icon in the far right of the menu across the bottom of your screen labeled Tinted.
This will pull up a gradient scale at the bottom of this menu and you can slide them until you get just the right hue.
Clear icons might be difficult for some people to see in the iOS 26 beta.
Apple/Screenshot by CNET
You can also tap the eyedropper icon in the top right corner of the menu to select a color from your background that matches your icons more closely. That way you're not moving the sliders and getting frustrated because the colors aren't matching -- not that this happened to me, definitely not. This change will affect all your app icons.
You can also give some of your apps a darker background.
1. Long-press on your background to enter jiggle mode -- where your apps are shaking.
2. Tap Edit in the top left corner of your screen.
3. Tap Customize.
4. Tap the icon left of center in the menu across the bottom of your screen labeled Dark.
Apple's first-party apps, like Messages, Safari and more, will now have an almost-black background. This change applies to first-party Apple apps and some third-party apps, like the YouTube and Bluesky apps. Other third-party apps, like Instagram and Snapchat, are unchanged.
Choosing Dark will darken your background, which could reduce the amount of power your iPhone uses and extend your battery life.
If you're a developer or beta tester with the iOS 26 beta on your device, you will also see an option for Clear in the home screen Customize menu. Tap Clear and all the app icons on your home screen will turn semi-translucent. This will also affect icons across your device, like in Settings and other menus.
How to only darken your background
If you've tinted your app icons, or like the icons with a lighter appearance, you can darken your background to make the icons stand out. Here's how.
1. Long-press on part of your background to enter jiggle mode -- where your apps are shaking.
2. Tap Edit in the top left corner of your screen.
3. Tap Customize.
4. Tap the sun icon in the top left corner of the new menu.
This will only darken your wallpaper and won't affect your app icons.
How to arrange apps around your home screen
Arranging apps on your home screen is the same process as before. You can either enter jiggle mode by long-pressing on a blank portion of your background and then dragging apps where you want them to go, or press and drag an app to a new location.
You can arrange apps in a pattern or any formation you want.
Apple/Screenshot by CNET
You can place all your apps near the bottom of your screen, have them frame your screen or arrange them in any other number of patterns. Because I'm right-handed, I placed most of my apps on the right side of my screen so I can easily tap them without fear of dropping my phone. This also makes it easy to ensure you see your background if it's a picture of a loved one or a pet.
The grid is still present, so you can't place apps on top of each other or too close together. If you enlarge your apps, there will be a sizable gap between your dock across the bottom of your screen and the lowest row of the grid. It looks like it's big enough to fit another app icon, but you can't -- I tried to no avail.
Don't forget, any iOS 26 features mentioned here are still in beta. So Apple could adjust or remove these features by the time the company releases iOS 26 this fall.

The tech trade hits pause ahead of Nvidia earnings

The tech pullback this week wasn't anywhere close to a Deepseek moment, when investors questioned the long-term viability of Silicon Valley's AI transition after the Chinese company competed favorably with OpenAI at a fraction of the cost. But Wall Street did hit the breaks, alarmed by a handful of pessimistic headlines amplifying long-standing criticism about ballooning valuations and the costs of the AI boom. While it's too premature and extreme to forecast a major failure or correction — AI stocks have kept plenty enough gains to keep the S&P 500 in the 6,300s — it's clear that the market is signaling a measure of unease with current measures of success. Sign up for the Yahoo Finance Morning Brief By subscribing, you are agreeing to Yahoo's Terms and Privacy Policy It may not be enough anymore for the tech giants and other AI players to tout their enormous capital expenditures and new chatbot initiatives if the market demands actual results. And investors, enriched by rising stock prices (but also pressured by the staggering weight of them), keep asking: Where are they? For most companies using AI, you won't find them. That's the punch-in-the-stomach takeaway from a report published by an initiative at MIT that provided at least part of the moment's catalyst. The research revealed that while roughly 5% of AI pilot programs enjoyed rapid revenue acceleration, the other 95% of companies in the dataset delivered little to no measurable impact on their business. Generative AI initiatives, to be sure, are producing huge returns for a small subset of startups and firms. But the paper highlighted that failed projects were the norm, rather than the exception. As stark as those numbers are, the results might be expected. After all, a new technology that doesn't require technological mastery is also attracting entrepreneurs motivated by a get-rich-quick ethos. And as pliable and dynamic as generative AI tools appear to be, large language models and their derivative products can't address every market bottleneck or consumer pain point. A salesperson yapping about AI deployment and ROI can resemble a "solution" in search of a problem. Other factors sparked the tech sector wobble. Meta (META), wielding a gargantuan budget to assemble an elite AI geek squad, has embarked on another internal restructuring. Not even the daring aim of achieving superintelligence can defeat the tedium of corporate bureaucracy. And OpenAI's ( Sam Altman recently warned that investors might be in for some pain as an AI bubble bursts. "There will be periods of irrational exuberance," he said last week. "But on the whole, the value for society will be huge.' As AI favorites Nvidia (NVDA) and Palantir (PLTR) slipped this week, a broader narrative gained momentum. Perhaps this was another inflection point showcasing the potential paradigm shift away from the dominance of a handful of tech stocks to a less lopsided market. Don't tell that to the tech bulls, though. Especially as Nvidia prepares for a must-watch earnings report next week that could wipe these worries away — or compound them. Tech skeptics will be proven wrong, again, wrote Wedbush analyst Dan Ives in a note on Wednesday, viewing the tech losses as a blip. "While the bears will fret about valuations and have been skeptical of the historical tech rally, we stress that if you focus solely on valuation looking out a year with P/E ... you would have missed every transformational growth tech stock the last 20 years," he said. Ohio's Southwest Local School District Modernizes Procurement and Invoicing with Euna Solutions

SWLSD achieves faster approvals, 25% cost savings, and full digitization with Euna's cloud-based tools ATLANTA & TORONTO, August 21, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Euna Solutions®, a leading provider of best-in-class SaaS solutions, purpose-built for the public sector, today announced that Southwest Local School District (SWLSD) in Ohio has successfully modernized its procurement and invoicing operations using Euna Procurement's Marketplace and Invoicing modules. Fully integrated with the district's ERP system, the new digital-first tools have reduced manual workloads, improved accuracy, and enhanced financial transparency. "Before Euna, we were filing stacks of paper and manually retyping invoices and requisitions, which created unnecessary delays and clerical errors," said Roger McGregor, Treasurer at SWLSD. "Now, we've completely streamlined those processes—teachers can order what they need online, and invoices are automatically matched and processed. It's a night-and-day improvement." Procurement: 25% Cost Savings and Faster Approvals Previously relying on paper-based requisitions and manual approvals, SWLSD implemented Euna Procurement's Marketplace as part of a broader district-wide digital modernization effort. Teachers and staff are now able to browse digital vendor catalogs, submit purchase requests online, and benefit from automated workflows and real-time data that integrates into SWLSD's existing ERP system for seamless financial tracking and reconciliation. The district saw a 25% cost savings on eligible purchases in their first year of using Euna Marketplace, processing over 1,200 orders and tracking more than $315,000 in spend through the solution. Procurement approvals are now 60% faster, averaging just 1–2 days. AI-powered savings recommendations within Euna Marketplace helped SWLSD save 25% on eligible purchases compared to baseline pricing. Invoicing: Eliminated Paper and Improved Accuracy The district also replaced its paper-heavy invoicing process with Euna Marketplace's Invoicing module. Instead of retyping and filing physical invoices, staff members now process hundreds of invoices with greater efficiency. In 2024, SWLSD processed 2,821 invoices through the system, fully eliminating printed invoices and enabling real-time tracking of payments. "The ability to instantly find any invoice in the system—not search through a file box—is a huge time saver," added McGregor. "It also gives our leadership clear, real-time visibility into spending and outstanding payments." A Model for K–12 Modernization SWLSD's success reflects a growing shift in K–12 procurement toward automation and integration where AI-enabled platforms are leading the way in driving cost savings and operational efficiency in public education. With Euna Procurement's Marketplace and Invoicing solutions, SWLSD joins a growing number of districts modernizing financial operations to increase transparency and reduce administrative burden. "Southwest Local School District's journey exemplifies what we strive for at Euna Solutions: simplifying complexity and enabling our public sector partners to drive efficiency while operating smoothly and transparently," said Brian Haney, Chief Customer Officer at Euna Solutions. "Through intuitive tools like Euna Marketplace, we help districts unlock time and cost savings so they can focus on their mission, not manual processes. It's about empowering organizations to serve their communities better, building trust, and creating the kind of operational environment where both staff members and constituents can thrive."
