Student enrolment in US drops due to visa restrictions, UK and Asia gain ground

India Today07-08-2025
International student enrolment in the United States is witnessing a steep decline this year, as several countries, including the United Kingdom and Asian education hubs like Hong Kong and Singapore, experience a significant surge in interest.According to data analysis by NAFSA, an agency that promotes international education, new international enrolments in the US could fall by 30 to 40 percent this autumn.advertisementThis sharp drop is being attributed to a combination of policy tightening, visa delays, and political unrest, especially under the administration of former President Donald Trump.
The recent US policy direction includes more stringent visa screenings, pauses in visa appointments, and even threats of deportation linked to political activism."The American brand has taken a massive hit, and the UK is the one that is benefiting," said Mike Henniger, CEO of Illume Student Advisory Services, as reported by AP.LONG WAITS AND UNCERTAINTYIn countries like China, visa appointment backlogs have been so severe that some students are abandoning their plans to study in the US altogether. On partial anonymity, Chinese student Alisa, who plans to attend a semester at the University of California, Berkeley, said she is also exploring backup options "just so I could still go to school if the extreme scenario occurs."Hong Kong has received over 500 enquiries from US-based international students seeking transfers, and about 200 applications are currently being processed, according to Hong Kong University. At the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, international undergraduate applications are up 40 percent this year.UK AND AUSTRALIA CAPITALISE ON THE SHIFTThe United Kingdom, the second-most popular destination for global students, is seeing clear gains. Despite the new Labour government's stance on cutting migration and setting time limits on post-study work visas, international applications have risen.Official data shows a 2.2 percent rise in undergraduate applications this autumn, including a record 10 percent increase from China and a 14 percent surge in applications from the US. Graduate admissions are also up by 10 percent, particularly in business and management studies.Australia, too, has moved to accommodate more international students, raising its intake cap to 2.95 lakh in 2026.SHIFT TOWARDS ASIA AND SATELLITE CAMPUSESAsian education centres like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia are becoming more attractive due to affordability and fewer visa challenges. Will Kwong of AAS Education said, 'Opting for study in Asia has been a trend since the easing of COVID-19, but obviously it's been exacerbated by the change of administration in the US.'advertisementHong Kong's Chief Executive, John Lee, has assured that the city would welcome students denied US entry. The city has recently allowed international students to work part-time.Meanwhile, countries like the United Arab Emirates and Kazakhstan are gaining traction by offering branch campuses of foreign universities. Dubai now hosts dozens of international institutions, with its international student numbers growing by a third in 2024-25.Lisa Johnson of Dubai's American Academy for Girls remarked, 'Every student wants and dreams to go to Harvard. But as college options increase in the United Arab Emirates, more and more students are staying.'Institutions like Illinois Tech and the University of Arizona have begun offering degrees in Kazakhstan, appealing to students from China and Russia.Daniel Palm, who has helped US universities expand overseas, noted the ongoing challenge: 'All of a sudden, US colleges are asking how to provide diversity, provide access, because you have students who want to come to the US and can't.'(With inputs from AP)- Ends

India's balancing act: PM Modi lauds ‘friend' Putin, boosts China ties amid Trump tariff tensions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin and New Delhi's renewed engagement with Beijing indicate another sign India is tilting away from the US in the face of Donald Trump's unprecedented tariff hikes. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attend a concert before an informal dinner on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia October 22, 2024. (REUTERS) In a phone call with Vladimir Putin, after his crucial summit with US President Donald Trump in Alaska, PM Narendra Modi described the Russian leader as a 'friend". The two agreed to keep close contact, with Modi reaffirming that 'India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard". Putin also called Brazil's Luiz Inacio da Silva on Monday to share information about the Alaska meeting, according to a statement from the Brazilian president's office. During the call, the Russian leader 'acknowledged Brazil's involvement in the Group Friends for Peace' on Ukraine, which also includes China. Putin had spoken with Modi, Lula and China's Xi Jinping, the founding members of the BRICS group of major emerging-market economies, earlier this month before his meeting with Trump, news agency Bloomberg reported. The timing is particularly interesting. Within hours of the call, external affairs minister S Jaishankar met with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, who is on his first visit to India in three years. Both sides stressed a willingness to move beyond recent tensions. 'Having seen a difficult period in our relationship, now seek to move ahead. Differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict,' S Jaishankar said as he interacted with his Chinese counterpart. Wang was equally forward-looking. With 'unilateral bullying' shaping the global order, he said, China and India should 'regard each other as partners and opportunities, not as opponents or threats". China has privately assured India of fertilizer, rare earth and infrastructure equipment supplies, according to Indian officials. India's tariff tensions with US India's outreach to Russia and China comes as relations with the US fray under Trump's tariff push. The Trump administration has slapped a 50 per cent tariff on Indian exports over its purchases of Russian oil, a move that could cripple sectors dependent on overseas markets, Bloomberg reported. India's strong ties with Russia India's refusal to stop buying oil from Russia reflects decades of partnership, from Cold War defence deals to today's trade. India has largely stayed neutral on Ukraine, refusing to align with Washington's sanctions-heavy approach. Signals of thaw with China If Moscow is a steady partner, Beijing is the wild card. India-China ties hit a low point after a bloody border skirmish in 2020 at Galwan Valley. But recent months have seen signs of fence-mending: Beijing has loosened curbs on urea exports, New Delhi has reinstated tourist visas for Chinese nationals, while a growing number of Indian businesses have been seeking partnerships with Chinese companies for deals including technology transfers, Bloomberg reported. Trump's tariffs on both countries' exports, as well as threats to penalise India for buying Russian oil, are adding urgency to normalise ties, it added. When asked if Beijing expects Putin to call President Xi Jinping as he did Modi and Brazil's Luiz Inacio da Silva, foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said 'the heads of state of China and Russia have maintained smooth communications channels.' Mao added that she had 'no information to offer' on any immediate plan for Xi to speak with Putin. PM Modi to visit China Modi is, meanwhile, poised to visit China and hold meetings with Xi later this month on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. If confirmed, it would be Modi's first visit to China in seven years. Jaishankar said that 'overall, it is our expectation that our discussions would contribute to building a stable, cooperative and forward-looking relationship between India and China.' Databricks Eyes Over $100 billion Valuation As Investors Back AI Growth Plans

Analytics firm Databricks expects its valuation to jump 61% to more than $100 billion in a funding round less than a year after its last, underscoring strong investor demand for AI startups. Databricks' latest funding round at a valuation of more than $100 billion underscores the strong investor demand for AI startups.(REUTERS) The San Francisco, California-based firm—with 15,000 customers, including payments firm Block, energy giant Shell and electric-vehicle maker Rivian—said it has signed a term sheet for a Series K round, but did not disclose the amount it was raising. Late last year, Databricks had raised $10 billion in one of the largest venture capital funding rounds in history, which valued it at $62 billion. The firm expects to use a portion of the latest funds in product development, and for mergers and acquisitions in the AI segment, as corporations and governments worldwide rush to leverage efficiencies from the nascent but rapidly evolving technology. 'Databricks is benefiting from an unprecedented global demand for AI apps and agents, turning companies' data into goldmines. We're thrilled this round is already over-subscribed,' Cofounder CEO Ali Ghodsi said. Startups are choosing to stay private for longer amid higher interest rates and unpredictable market appetite for initial public offerings over the past few years. Capital is also available for larger late-stage rounds as private market investors sit on record levels of dry powder. OpenAI is also in talks to close an employee share sale, which would value the ChatGPT parent at around $500 billion, Reuters had reported earlier this month.

China's Xpeng expects quarterly revenue to double on strong demand for its EVs

Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng on Tuesday forecast third-quarter revenue would double, betting on surging deliveries of its cars despite challenging economic conditions. Xpeng has been able to drum up demand for its diverse lineup of electric cars, helped by government stimuli to boost customer spending in a faltering economy. The carmaker is also working on integrating artificial intelligence into its self-driving software and expanding technology tie-ups with other automakers. "XPeng's in-house Turing chip , once mass-produced, could be a pivotal step in the company's intelligent driving ambitions. The chip is designed specifically for XPeng's own requirements, offering targeted optimization over generic industry solutions," said Rosalie Chan, an analyst at Third Bridge. China is now the largest auto market in the world due to the ability of its companies to make and sell vehicles at lower costs than Western automakers. But that has crowded the market, leading to a price war and a battle for technological supremacy. Xpeng forecast third-quarter revenue between 19.6 billion yuan ($2.73 billion) and 21 billion yuan, an increase of 94 per cent to 107.9 per cent from a year ago. Analysts on average expect revenue of 20.81 billion yuan, according to data compiled by LSEG. It expects quarterly deliveries between 113,000 and 118,000, a jump of 142.8 per cent to 153.6%. For the second quarter, the company reported revenue of 18.27 billion yuan, compared with estimates of 18.52 billion yuan.
